Very helpful as a doctoral candidate (psychology) who used auto-transcription and is now going back through to do quality checking and editing against the audio file itself. I wasn't sure if I needed to use strict verbatim or clean verbatim, as the dissertations and journal articles using my methodology look like clean verbatim, but a well-known researcher in my area said to always use verbatim with all the filler words because that points to the interviewee's state of mind. From watching your videos and his, and speaking with my mentor, it appears that my transcriptions need to be strict verbatim so I can code them appropriately, but when I go to include excerpts in my findings, I'll use a clean verbatim version of the excerpt unless the "extras" are key to the excerpt itself. I'd read and practiced transcribing for oral history and genealogy projects for many years, but for academic research purposes, this is a first. I wish there was more guidance on how to do transcription (interview transcription in particular) for qualitative research. So glad I found your channel! I've subscribed already. :)

Thank you for this tutorial. In clean verbatim transcription, What if someone says I wanted to go to, my mum discouraged me from going to the cinema. So, they started that sentence, did not finish it, but changed direction. Rev guideline states that the use of ellipses is okay. Pleae could you throw more light on this? Thank you.

First people say spelling and the alphabet is exactly what is said. Then I learn the phonemes in our language. Then those are outdated and include sounds we don't use anymore [Geoff Lindsey yt]. Then I learn that what makes english, english are the weak forms. Words like 'have' regularly reduce to just [v] and is filled in by the context. Then it is the artistic side where I notice so many details that aren't even marked in transcription systems. When will people stop lying to me?? Language was about what we where able to notice all along, the reason we need to go deeper is just for comparison. To communicate something that varies from what we would have noticed without it

Hi. I appreciate all your videos that I have watched so far. They have been very helpful! Very concise, all important points that I needed to know have been clearly discussed. I just want to ask something about proper punctuation spacing.. if the client didn't mention anything as to how it should be done, what would be proper way to do it? (Do we follow the standard rule, i.e., double space after a period, colon, exclamation point, etc, and single after a comma, semi-colon, etc.?) Thank you so much!

Hi Jeniffer, thank you for your videos. They're very informative to learn about the transcribing business, sort of speak. I'd like to ask you about a bit of a confussion I have from one of your prior videos, in which you explained that you needen't add a full stop (.) at the end of the transcription, BUT, on this video you do. What am I missing? Thanks!
@JenniferMarieVO2 жыл бұрын
That was only for one particular platform (TranscribeMe). In general, you always add full stops in transcriptions. Make sure to read the guidelines for each company you apply to. :)

Hi, Jenifer. Thanks for your inspirational information. I am very interested in getting familiar and knowledgeable about Translating and Transcribing, especially Translating, online. Unfortunately, I don´t know where to start working as a prospective transcriptionist or translator. I´d like to have some certainty that I would be working for a company which gives equal focus to the academic quality of their project executors as well as to their countless numbers of projects, for companies in general have numerous transcribers and translators who rate their bid payments very low in order to be hired, and whose academic background suggests doubts. i.e. there´s a lot of marketing saturation in professional servicing which in a way conspires against well intentioned and well formed academics, and somehow dispirits some possible skillful persons in the field. On the other hand, there seems to be many bid fakers posting false projects online. I have been intended to be scammed twice in less than a month via this apparently common practice. I will appreciate very much your suggestions and ideas about learning how to access with some confidence to far-reaching companies requiring professionals in the areas mentioned above. Thanks. Rafael Santos.

Hi Jennifer. I am applying for Daily Transcription and I have no experience in this area. I aced the first test and I am doing the transcription test now. The thing is they asked me to transcribe a conversation in a busy restaurant with a lot of background noise. I used audacity per your recommendation to reduce the background noise but it is still very challenging. Do you have any tips for me in doing this task? This is going to be a full verbatim transcription. Thank you.

What kind of keyboard do you recommend?
@JenniferMarieVO4 жыл бұрын
Any keyboard that feels natural to you and is easier to type. I think that it depends on the person. Some people prefer an external USB keyboard that they'll plugin to their laptop that's more ergonomic or a mechanical keyboard. I'd just use any that you'll be able to type fastest with and feel most comfortable with.

Is there no medium verbatim where there is a little bit of the full verbatim where you do not like put too much of that in a sentence, having it a little cleaner not allowing the use of words that you would remove to some degree? Only removing filler words so much so you might end up with an "Um" or "sort of" to some degree, but not allowing "like" a ton of times and so on.

hi, i recently got a transcription job. i'm taking way more time than i anticipated. i'm just wondering how long does it take to finish a 1 hour audio file?

Congrats! I would estimate it could take 3-4 hours to transcribe a 1 hour file when first starting out. Later on, you might be able to do it in 2-3 hours. There are a few tricks you can use like voice to text etc so you can say it instead of typing and correct later. Check out my playlist on transcription tips. :)
