For those curious- most consistent does not necessarily equate to favorite. I think, out of the box, this brewer is arguably more consistent than others because it a) doesn't stall (i've not had one stall yet), b) has superior thermal stability, and c) is a flat bottom brewer, which tend to be a bit more easy to control.
Anyway, I hope you enjoyed the video! It was a short one, so if you dig that shorter format on occasion, make sure to hit the like!

Hey Lance! Decided to try flat bottom brewers now that I have had a lot of time with V60… I wondered if you have kept up with what is coming up with Orea. Specifically, I was going to buy the Orea V3…. Then I saw the V4. Love the idea of modularity. I was stuck between narrow and wide options. Wish I could have enough money to try both, but thought it might make a nice video! Especially since we haven’t seen much on pour overs lately ;). Keep up the good work!

Cool little brewer! Having custom fit / seamed filters will be important. The circle smash looks like it works, but it also looks like it may suffer from similar problems to the Chemex with the pleated parts of the filter having multiple layers of filter unevenly distributed around the sides. Won’t be quite as egregious since the filters adhere to the walls better so the bottom is the clear exit point, but you definitely still get some coffee side-exiting, so that seems like an obvious improvement. Glad to see a flat bottom, steep walled brewer that is getting rid of those frilly filters. 🙏

I actually like your longer videos more. This dripper needs more discussion. Most of the people who use this do not have a negotiator and use just regular Kalita papers. Coffee with April released a video about this dripper too and they did the opposite of you with using only kalita papers. And Patrik talked about how this dripper stalls near the end :O I would love to watch an hour-long video of you talking about the possible ways of using orea, especially considering your energy while talking, it would be so much fun to watch haha BTW, did you try using trapezoid filters? The diameters of the papers are 185mm and 155mm 🤝 - Personally have not had luck with lab papers, as they tend to be too dense and pores too small (the ones I could find). In the video, Lance is using various coffee filters in flat circular form. One is actually a Chemex filter, which does work well if you cut it to size - it's thick, with a good flow rate. We sell an alternative too currently, in the right diameters, but the flat project is very much still a work in progress! Hope this helps!

When I've tried to switch to faster brewers - Espro Bloom and Simplify - I wasn't able to produce a well-rounded brew. They were always dry and bitter, presumably from having to grind so fine. Is it just because both of those are TOO fast, whereas the Orea is faster than a Kalita but slower than the others?
@joshyjoshs237
@joshyjoshs237 2 жыл бұрын
The Orea is faster than anything. Faster than the Stagg X with a metal mesh on bottom too. To me it's too fast and I can't get good brews with small doses, always too astringent even if I grind coarse. A little "immersion" phase is needed IMO and Orea doesn't give you that, it's fast erosion all the time

Hi! Thanks for sharing! Is that one the small or the large v3? Thanks

why don't you like the version 2 Orea? just because of the lower thermal stability or some other reason? bc other than the material, they're exactly the same, ya? i'd be willing to sacrifice some thermals for the superior look and feel (my opinion of course) of the aluminum version if all else remains equal also couldn't you just use the negotiator with a kalita filter?

How do you find this compared to the Kono?

Apples and Oranges. One is conical and one flat. I love the Kono and probably use it more often.

@@LanceHedrick I am interested in more of this. I use Kono. What types of coffees would you use in Kono, what for Orea?

You do know that the ceramic Kalita Wave doesnt have the same stalling issues of the metal one right? It flows about as fast as a V60 but with a rounder flavour profile.

I do know this. It is what the shop I work for uses (onyx coffee lab). Ceramic is awful though for thermal stability. I also hate frilly filters. Hard to get a filter to lay flat in it, other than the new expensive sibarist flats

Would a disc of filter paper cut to the size of the bottom work as a filter instead of having to negotiate (like the tricolate)?
@danielcohn6884

Probably, but then clean up is messier and there's risk of the disc dislodging or pulling into the large drainage holes, which results in slurry in your cup

Good stuff! Do you know if the negotiator fits the Stagg X? Have you tried the new Sibarist flat filters?
@LanceHedrick

It does! And I have tried the new sibarist. They do not fit the Orea or the Stagg well

Thanks for your reply! I saw you’re testing Stéphane Ribes’ coffees. His current Kenyan on Stagg X is my daily driver these days, it is so good! Hope you try it. I think I’ll need to get an Orea now :).

Hi, I designed a tool to fit the Stagg X specifically. I think that the heat retention of the X's dual walls really helps extraction, and I removed the need for a screen to keep the filter from clogging. I think it works really well!

@@daRock1212 your tool looks very promising! If it manages to solve the issue of the screen and makes putting the filter in place a one step process it would make the Stagg X a flawless brewer! I'll definitely give it a try.
