To be precise - that is the case in buoyage system B, which is in use around the Americas, Japan and Korea. In other parts of the world is is exactly the other way round ( buoyage system A). There the memory hook is "red to red" for incoming vessels (the red marker on shore shall be on the side of your vessel's port side red sidelights).

It changes in the Intracoastal Waterway. Red is always on the mainland side of the cut. This is because the ICW starts in NJ and ends in TX. Following a clockwise direction, you are "returning" when going clockwise from NJ. Red, Right, Returning. So, if you are on the Florida Gulf side headed north, the red buoys would be on the starboard side. If you were on the Atlantic side, the red buoys would be on the left. Look for yellow markers to identify the ICW.

The entire PNW is no joke. There is a very good reason the Coast Guard runs 44ft. SAR boats only up there. Capsizing is common, and the 44 footers will right themselves. I always wanted a transfer from Galveston to the PNW. The Gulf of Mexico can throw some stuff at you, but you really have to be on point in the northwest.✌😸

I worked at a place called Hoyt Marine in Newport Oregon back in the 90's, and it sits in Yaquina bay Oregon. The inlet there is one of the most dangerous places I've seen. I once watched an 80 foot commercial ship get swamped and sink in the break waters, the coast guard ship that came to their rescue also sank trying to save them. In all several people died that day and all the bystanders could do was watch in horror. I was so close to the men in the water I could see the scared looks on their faces, but jumping in there would be suicide. I'll never forget that, as long as I live.

I think almost everyone who has boated in South Jersey for any time has grounded coming out of Barnegat Inlet. What you didn't mention was that the jetty on the north end is submerged into the ocean and poorly marked. I've seen people cut that corner coming back in, only to run into the jetty. The sandbars constantly shift as well, and for whatever reason the ICW in New Jersey is the worst, most poorly maintained part of the ICW. That is why almost all boaters making the trip from New York to points south prefer to stay outside the Jersey coast, with the exception of going into Absecon Inlet to Atlantic City, probably the best inlet in the state. And then boaters usually end up at the Golden Nugget casino and lose their money.

"The things I saw on the Columbia River that night will forever stay me because of their monstrous dimensions." -Ron Jansson A quote from Commander Wilkes, US Navy (ca. 1860) sums it up nicely: “Mere description can give but little idea of the terrors of the bar of the Columbia; all who have seen it have spoken of the wilderness of the ocean and the incessant roar of the waters, representing it as one of the most fearsome sites that can possibly meet the eye of a sailor.” I can speak for the bar, I was stationed at CG station Cape Disappointment. I have seen first hand what mother nature will throw at you when she gets angry ..and it can happen in minutes. It'll go from calm 4-6' rollers to 15+ in a matter of minutes, it's a beautiful place but it is not a place to be messed with.

@sewing1243
@sewing1243 2 жыл бұрын
I heard that and knew it was wrong. The only thing I can think of that the narrator might have been try to say is that, depending on what direction a boat is heading on the Inter-coastal Waterway the side for passing red and green markers can be flipped depending on what direction you intend on going once you enter the ICW (Because the ICW runs along the shore, the conventional adage of “red, right, returning from seaward” becomes unclear. So the Coast Guard adopted the following clockwise convention: moving in a southerly direction along the Atlantic Coast, then in a northerly, then westerly direction along the Gulf Coast, is considered returning from seaward. You can remember this rule as “red, right, returning to Texas.”). So while entering an inlet from the sea "red, right, returning" is correct, but once you hit the ICW that isn't always the case.

You seem to be clueless about West Coast bars they are so much more serious then the East Coast variants including the Yaquina Bay bar which I have personally ran. At least you mentioned the Columbia bar. A real boater needs to do this list...
@mattewflash3421
@mattewflash3421 5 ай бұрын
East coast easily tops the west coast on dangerous inlets by a mile marker lol. Just look up the most dangerous US inlets. Out of 10, maybe 1 or 2 in the Pacific make that list. But as far as "the" most dangerous inlet goes, Oregon inlet probably trumps all. It's really not even an inlet but more of a group of scattered sand bars made from a hurricane. Aside from the unpredictable changing cross currents, the massive breaking waves literally coming from every direction, the shallowness makes it's nearly impossible to navigate, and it changes so unpredictibly the bouys are almost useless 😂

Back in 82' I was stationed at Oregon Inlet on an 82ft Coast Guard boat. On a cold November Saturday, we received a call from Hatteras Group office of a 100ft trawler aground the south side of the channel. We had figured maybe a 2hr case. Nope... After a extremely wet cold long morning, flipping our RHIB, two of our crewmembers thrown in the water, the crew of the FV Lois Joyce gets evac'd by E-City helo and the Jois Joyce becomes another casualty at the inlet. Yup... Oregon Inlet takes the top 5 I would say. Oh yeah... Cape D takes the cake for sure!

Wait what? "Every sailor worth their salt knows the old saying red right return...meaning when you see a red buoy STAY TO THE RIGHT to you make your way back to the marina." Not trying to nit pick, but don't stay to the right...you must keep the buoy to your right when returning, not stay to the right of the buoy when returning or your staying to the left of the buoy...That would put you on the wrong side of the buoy. The USA and territories are the only places in the world where entering a harbour you keep red buoys to your starboard/right and only sailors worth their salt know that. The system employed in the US is reversed from the entirety of the rest of the world and is really just America acting contrarian for no good reason. Entering a harbour is not something done only by those that live there but, also by seafarers from distant parts and setting buoys up to match the colours of port & starboard on the vessel as you enter, is the greatest assistance you can give to those who’ve already had to face what the sea can throw at them. Adding another burden to their passage by an illogical reversal of the international system of buoys is a pretty phuqqed up move and has no logical basis at all.

It took 2 attempts to get back over the Bar about 3 weeks later. The whirlpools, and large waves coming from every direction was insane!😅 Our boat came within yards of being tossed on the jetty rocks! We made it out a few hours later and survived the huge storm and delivered the boat to it's owner in Seattle Washington.. Last repro job for me!😅

In the Chatham Inlet, the depth of the canals are always changing. The two points with the inlet in between used to be connected and accessible by land, it was called Monomoy Point. The break occurred in 1991 during "The Perfect Storm". Once the breach occurred in what was a barrier for the harbor and the homes, sand kept being swept into the harbor, creating sand bars in the harbor and constantly changing the depth. Oc The harbor is dredged when absolutely necessary, but otherwise the depths of the inlet fluctuate so you never know when a sand bar has been created. The breach also caused 10 or 11 homes to fall into the ocean as erosion took all that land away, the homes were previously protected by the point.

The sand bars are constantly changing, and I’ve seen numerous people grounded on the sand and on the rocks on the north side of the inlet. Also, want to make mention at 3:05….that is incorrect. You don’t stay to the right of the red buoy when returning….that means the buoy is on your left and you are out of the channel. You KEEP the buoy on your right in order to stay in the channel.

Good ol' Indian River inlet, i grew up going there, we called it the jackhammer for a reason. Charleston is pretty swift itself, I've seen Charleston spin around a couple hundred foot freighter in a few minutes. Timing is everything. If you want to see a really tricky spot look at the narrows on the ICW just south of Charleston between the two inlets, its about 35' wide and sees 6knt currents. It's like trying to run a boat in a surf pool, rocks and concrete on both sides. One screwup and your boats done. I came thru that with my 34' sailboat and had to hold position against the current while a smaller sailboat struggled thru ahead of me. Basically it's ridding rapids when your against the current.

I've fished out of West Port, which is Gray's Harbor, north of the Columbia River..... and even that bar can be rough! My dad was a deckhand for a charter fishing boat and I've gone out many times. It's a 55ft boat, made for that kind of weather....and I still managed to get nearly washed overboard 😶 15ft rolling waves are the biggest (they aren't the 30+ Deadliest Catch type waves) but, when the wind is bad, you're facing those 15ft rollers as they break over the bar.... it gets a bit rough. Astoria area, though (the Columbia River Inlet)....that is a a scary bar to cross. My dad fishes there all the time, though. 🤷‍♂️ off topic but, incidently: Sig Hansen from Deadliest Catch used the charter fishing company my dad worked for when he wanted to go recreational fishing. 👍

I went into the Columbia River bar in the sailing yacht Canvasback in, I think, July 1987 on a passage from the San Francisco Bay. The ship was a 71' aluminum catamaran and we motored in. The captain was dreading the bar crossing and let us crew know that many times a day during the entire trip. When we got there, we found no swell running at all, the winds were light and variable and we caught the tide at slack to incoming and it was so pleasant and uneventful that it was really funny. It's all about the conditions.

Not too dangerous going out, but if there are seas above 3 feet and you're coming in it funnels the waves together into these really steep rollers. The Lake Worth Inlet and Boynton inlet are two different inlets the Lake Worth and let also known as the Palm Beach Inlet is not very dangerous or tricky just watch out for the cruise traffic and all the Yahoo's from Peanut Island but the Boynton inlet is the narrowest of all the inlets pretty much anywhere and is super sketchy with very sharp Jagged metal on both sides hidden underwater at high tide I would put this one on a rough day at the top

Basil: "May I ask what you were expecting to see out of a Torquay hotel bedroom window? Sydney Opera House, perhaps? the Hanging Gardens of Babylon? Herds of wildebeest sweeping majestically past?..." Mrs Richards: "Don't be silly! I expect to be able to see the sea!" Basil: "You can see the sea, it's over there between the land and the sky." The Columbia river bar is to be avoided at max ebb. The river current is so strong the effects of a strong ebb can be felt 18 miles out. No joke!

Haulover is no joke few years ago we took my 22ft boat to Bimini for a few days nice calm crossing the return trip was pretty rough but when we entered the inlet I was behind a larger boat so I slowed down and it felt like it was sucking the back of my boat down so I gave it full throttle and at full throttle still didn't move for about 5 seconds I never seen current that strong Definitely proceed with caution

Lots of inlets.but they failed to mention was the mouth of the Merrimack river going into Newburyport harbor in Massachusetts. Very unpredictable and massive riptides. Sometimes the coast guard is there to prevent boats from going through. .

Hmmm, Boynton inlet, narrow and heavy chop almost all the time, some boat insurance companies will state that if you run Boynton and it trouble you are not covered. Been through Barnegat inlet many times, and never had a problem with it, just stick to concentrating on it and you'll be fine.One thing that many don't realize is that in the north many boaters only run five months of the year whilst in Florida they run all year, experience counts.

The video footage is incorrect for number 4, the South Lake Worth (or Boynton) Inlet. The Boynton Inlet is indeed very dangerous but the video shows the Lake Worth (or Palm Beach) Inlet, which is one of the safest and best inlets on the east coast of the United States.

Now you can see why Mississippi river boat captains had stretches of the river that they took on a 'lightning' pilot for. Sandbars, snags, shallows...that river changes daily. That would be an interesting topic, navigable rivers with cantankerous personalities for traffic.✌😸

The USCG has 19 surf stations and 23 heavy weather stations (where winds are > 30 knots and seas are >8 feet 10% or more of the year). Not one on the east coast is farther south that North Carolina. Sorry guys, can some of the Florida inlets can be tricky and dangerous to the inexperienced, absolutely, but they are very very rarely "truly nasty and dangerous" compared to those inlets with surf and heavy weather stations. Take out the high traffic factors ("extreme number of people who have no business operating a boat", and "people should never operate small boats too close to giant cargo ships") and base it purely on 1) frequency of and number of combined dangerous conditions a)extreme currents, b) frequency of highly confused seas, and frequency of rogue waves c) shifting shoals and frequency of change in shoals (aka the "that wasn't there yesterday!" Factor) 2) frequency of surf 6-8 feet high, and frequency of seas within 10 miles higher than 12 feet 3) frequency of rapidly altering sea states 4) nearby sudden alterations in seafloor that cause rapid changes in seas (ie. Diamond shoals can cause breaking surf up to 10 miles off shore with zero warning) 5) % of incidents per number of transiting vessels (daily average traffic) that are unrelated to operator incompetence or reckless behavior, including intoxicated boating(not just pilot error, but absolutely stupid and have no idea what they're doing, drunk /high as hell)

I used Carolina B. Inlet for years. It can be tricky and dangerous, the problem being the large amount of water that drains out and when the wind driven waves meet the falling tide current they tend to pile up surprisingly large. This plus C. B. I. is very shallow with a narrow channel and a dogleg turn at the point of no return is what makes this Inlet tricky. It has very shallow shoals on either side that should be avoided. Masonboro I. N of C.B.I. in Wrightsville Beach has rock jetty borders and even with much more traffic is easily traversed.

The footage used for the South Lake Worth inlet aka the Boynton Beach inlet is incorrect, that footage appears to be the lake worth inlet aka the palm beach inlet. The Boynton inlet is dangerous for a few reasons but mostly because it's extremely narrow. One could easily toss a baseball back and forth from one side to another.
