It might be controversial, but I still don't understand why contemporary books about normal teenagers having issues with their family, school, friends, or mental illness meet some perfect and amazing cute boys or girls that later love them to death and change their whole lives keep getting published. It's like telling us (teenagers, especially girls since we are the main audiences) that you need another person to change your life, fix your behavior, and solve your own damn problems. I only started reading these types of books this year, and it only took me two tries to realize that these are written so bad. Instead of waiting for a boy who just moved next to your house yesterday to make you feel loved, how about being a mature person and working your way up? Sorry if it sounds harsh, but this is the way I feel. We are portrayed so bad that some people start thinking about teenagers like stupid, ignorant, and materialistic. It's amazing to see Emily as an adult having the same opinion. Thank you. 😄

Han Nguyen I completely agree with you, that's my pet peeve with ya contemporary. I read My Heart and Other Black Holes two years ago and it was all good and nice until the boy came around and magically fixed everything. I felt like throwing the book across the room. NO, that's not how depression goes away, stop telling people they're not enough by themselves and need to be saved and fixed! Hmpf.

As someone who suffers with severe anxiety and mild depression i agree with you life’s not like that and for it to always be someone else to save them like why can’t or be a best friend maybe or a family member if they’re going to make it about that

I followed your beauty channel first so I was super happy to find you're in booktube too! But what's best about your channel is that you're not as IN LOVE with YA as literally almost the rest of booktube. I've read quite a few book recommendations by them and I get so frustrated because some of them are so overhyped. Maybe it's an age thing. Keep doing your thang!

I refuse to read HP&The Cursed Child! For me the series ended after Deathly Hallows and reading that book would ruin a perfectly fine endling! And so many people hate that book anyways so I'm not even going to try. From the other books I was only interested in the Neil Gaiman book but now that you're so dissappointed with it I'm not sure...

LifewithEmilyFox I really like Neil Gaiman, so I know I'm biased, but you have American Gods behind you on your shelf, and I really think it's worth a read. It's my favourite book. definitely got a lot of fantasy and weird stuff, but I started reading it as something to just read on the train going to uni and ended up reading all of it! if you don't like it, then you probably won't like other Neil Gaiman books, but that's okay 😁

I completely agree about the love tropes and how falling in love with a boy will magically fix you. As soon as something like that starts to happen in a book, I'm out. being disabled and gay for girls, I can't say that meeting a cute boy has made me better or y'know...done anything for me. and I agree that it is not healthy at all, it freaks me out how much I used to idealise that as a teenager.
@BookswithEmilyFox

See that's exactly why I get frustrated when people tell me I'm just getting too old for YA... No I just see all the issues in YA now that I'm not 14 anymore! I still love plenty of YA books - the ones that aren't problematic and wouldn't have screwed my views, about love for example, as a teenager!

LifewithEmilyFox Yes! I still love YA, and I'll still read some popular stuff, but it can be difficult reading things and knowing that someone younger is reading it and thinking that's how the world is. It's not! That's not even close to real life!

I love how blunt and honest you are, its so refreshing! You have some books on here that I really enjoyed, but I can totally see where you are coming from about your criticisms and reasons you didn't like it. A lot of those tropes also don't work for me MOST of the time, but sometimes i still fall in love with the book if its done well or just magically works for me somehow.

I have come to the conclusion that while I love a lot of YA fantasy or dystopian books, YA contemporary just isn't usually my thing. I have liked a few, but maybe it's just because I'm older, but most of them fall flat or annoy me (some of the frequently used tropes just make me cringe). Fangirl was one of the ones that I actually DNF'ed. I just couldn't get through it. You are not alone my friend. Lol Take care and merry Christmas!!!!

I agree with what you said about YA. I don't understand why it has to be about a boy accepting the girl for who she is and therefore she can now be okay with who she is. I wish it would be more about finding self-love. A quote I think sums it up well is "Real love is responsibility, compromise, selflessness, being present, and all. Fake love is magic, excitement, false hope, infatuation, and getting high off the potential that another person is going to save you from yourself". HP and the Cursed Child was so awful. I can see how it'd be a great play to see. It seemed like visually, it'd be impressive. But the story was absolutely awful. It didn't feel like Harry Potter. Every book on your shelves I’ve read or is on my TBR. You’re literally the only book tuber I’ve been able to find who matches my style so closely & who mixes both YA & adult fic. Also, love your accent and hearing you say things in French! Btw-it’s usually pronounced uh-nye-uh-lay-shun. (Annihilation) I’m not trying to be a brat, but I know I like knowing when I’m saying something differently than most! Also. I completely agree with you about every book on this list. The only one I didn’t read is the Sophie Kinsella one, but I especially agree about the Gaiman and Vandermeer! I have now read 3 of Gaiman’s books tho and have found that I just don’t like him, but I still feel compelled to try Good Omen’s &/or American Gods. Also, I sorta hated Annihilation! I thought it was sorta on the creepy side but not in a good way! I can see how some people might like it tho.

Ohhhhhh I just got an illumination about one of my fav books this past year or so: Reboot by Amy Tintera. At first, I was: this is way too weird, but I ended up so into it, I can't wait for the tome2... Even though I like Audrey Retrouvée so far, I kinda agree with you with the boy being the savior and all, but I still really enjoy it... but the fact that we dont know the big trauma, it's annoying... I hate not knowing things, which explain why I always read the last pages first... and i didn't mind the last pages of the curse child so I'll give it a go, even thought I know it won't be as good as the original HP. I've always liked screenplay manuscripts (the taming of the shrew is one of my all time fav), so we will see. I love (good) YA books, but last year, I ended up putting them down for more Adult books. Hope to return to them this year as like you, alot of my most disappointing book were in YA. :(

I've read two books of Neil Gaiman (American Gods & Neverwhere) and I felt totally the same- I had high expectations from them (both have really interesting and cool premise), but they just didn't work for me. Idk, I just never got really connected to his writing and characters and just ended dragging myself through the books (although I really look forward to the upcoming tv-series American Gods). Though I got the illustrated edition for Neverwhere so at least it looks really pretty on my book shelf.

LifewithEmilyFox Well I've heard a lot of praise for "Good Omens" (an angel and a demon misplaces the antichrist- I mean how great doesn't that sound?). But "Neverwhere" is good, just that is wasn't for me, so maybe you'll like it!x

I didn't hate HP&TheCursedChild as the rest of the world seems to, but I really can see its problems. However, I went to the play in London at the beginning of the month and it was absolutely amazing! It is so mindblowing that you don't have time to think about character development or whether characters were acting like they normally would do. It was more of a what if story and at the same time very nostalgic. I laughed out loud and cried my eyes out. It was really magic on a stage. So if you ever have the chance to see it, do it. It is worth every single minute of it (and I promise you won't mind the book so much after it). And Scorpius is actually the funniest character in the entire HP universe :) Love your chanel!

I Love Neil Gaiman's story concepts, but for some reason (With 2 exceptions.) I have yet to be able to finish a book/story by him, whether it's for kids or not. I have no interest in giving up yet, but it's kind of frustrating. Was not crazy about 'Girl on the Train' by Paula Hawkins, I didn't like the lead character for various reasons, the story was fairly predictable...it did have some good suspense parts, and it was well written enough that I would willingly read other books by Paula Hawkins. The only other book wasn't one I disliked, it just wasn't what I expected though I do plan on buying the next book when it comes out: Mr. Penumbra's 24 hour bookstore.

I totally appreciate you saying that about Finding Audrey. I love reading books with my 16 year old daughter. (only because I have a 16 year old little girl in my soul that refuses to grow up) I considered getting that book for us to read/discuss, as my daughter also deals with anxiety, ptsd, and a bit of agoraphobia. But, you are absolutely right. No one else, (love) can fix your problems it helps to have loving relationships, but it is dangerous to assume, a boy/girl can fix all your problems. I look forward to reading a story that accurately represents mental illness and trauma. Perhaps, my daughter and I can write it! ;-)

My most disappointing books were Fangirl, The Sun Is Also A Star (I actually did like Everything Everything though, which was kind of strange for me, since, in essence, they were very similar). Also, every John Green Book I read (besides TFIOS - read that two years ago and despised it. After trying my fourth JG, I realized he wasn't for me). Oh, and Clockwork Angel/Clockwork Prince. It's kind of sad to hear all these people raving about books I hated. I always feel like I missed something...

The Firebird series by Claudia Gray turned out to be a huge disappointment. I liked the first one, A Thousand Pieces of You- I liked it, but didn't love it. I still thought it could redeem itself though, so I read the second one, which was not as good as the first. I read the first hundred pages of the last one before I just gave up.

I really liked Harry Potter and the Cursed Child. I don't know whether it is because I am an actor myself but I feel that the main problem people have with it is that plays have to be written to novels. Plays have a time limit (Usually 90 - 120 minutes) whereas books can take whatever time limit they want so they have to fit more into a short space of time plus an interval so there has to be a half-point break in the story as well.

Dumplin by Julie Murphy.I was hyped about the book when I read the synopsis and I thought I could relate myself to the main character. I thought the character could motivate me in some ways. Turns out the character annoyed me so much and the character demotivated me even more. and I just hate the plot because I don't think the story line is realistic. It took me forever to finish reading it and I'm not even happy when I finished it.

Especially with horror books, I find that leaving stuff to the imagination helps, not hinders, a story's creep factor. Because as what people say, what we imagine is definitely worse than what we actually see. It may be lazy writing sure, but writers should treat the readers as intelligent, right? Anyways, really enjoying your videos. I just thought I'd like to join in on the discussion 😊

I've heard that Harry Potter and the cursed child is an amazing play (like the actual stage production) and the bindup of the play doesn't compared. At the same time I read the play as kind of a fanfiction type of thing that wasn't connected to the books since JK didn't actually write it. So that was just my perspective on it.
