Personally, Northanger Abbey used to be one of my least favorite Jane Austen novels until I took a class on 18th century literature. Pretty much Northanger Abbey is a parody of gothic novels, which were really popular in Jane Austen's day. Gothic novels were all dramatic and mysterious and included many tropes like large castles, monsters, murders, dark hallways, candles blown out by sudden gusts of wind. My lit professor summed it up as picture 17th century Scooby Doo only instead of Mystery Inc the protagonists are heroic men and beautiful women (Bella/Isabella was a very common name for the female protagonist, Austen even makes that the protagonist's name in NA). So pretty much if you really want to enjoy Northanger Abbey I recommend first do a bit of google searching on Gothic novels (just like read a wiki page) because then it is easier to see how it's parodying the genre and it's a lot more fun, in my opinion. I also really liked Persuasion. Can't go wrong with either one. Happy reading!

A while ago I read The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks which I found very compelling. It is about how Lacks' cervical cancer cells were harvested, reproduced, and studied in order to get to the body of scientific knowledge that we have today. The writer tells her story, but also her descendants' stories as well, and how the groundbreaking research affected them (or didn't).

YES YES YES Assassin's Apprentice! The Farseer Trilogy is my favourite Robin Hobb trilogy (book 2 of it being my favourite, but the first is also amazing). You'll love it! I've got loads on my tbr for 2017 - currently reading Six of Crows but after that I'ma take inspiration from you and try to read some shorter books - not many of those in the fantasy genre so it'll be good to mix it up!

A great nonfiction book to read is Endurance: Shackleton' incredible voyage. It is about a 1914 South Pole expedition that gets trapped in an ice sheet and the months long struggle of how the 27 member crew got themselves to safety. It is truly epic and well written. Some editions of the book come with amazing photos that they managed to save.

I just read All the Light We Cannot See in December and I thought it was fantastic! It took me forever to pick it up because it was huge and historical fiction (which I really enjoy, but it can still be really dense). Once I finally started reading, though, I couldn't stop. I listened to the 16 hour audiobook straight through and when I finished, I was tempted to just start it over because I enjoyed it so much. I hope you like it!

Wohoo! We're going to be reading a lot of the same books. I doesn't have to do with this video in particular but I wanted to say that the thing I love the most about your videos is that you don't only say "I want to read this book" but give a short explanation on what is about and what you think will like about it.. This really helps viewers because we don't have to Google the books later and we can tell if we're interested in them just from your videos! One thing I'd like to request is that please please write the names of the books you mention in the description bar. Often I find myself interrupting the video in the middle to go add the book you mention to my 'to-read' list.. Thanks!

Anthony Rapp's memoir Without You was amazing, I loved it. It's about his experience with his past boyfriends and his journey in the theatre world and his experience playing Mark in Rent (hence the title). It was really great. Another one I wanna read is Kristen Chenoweth's memoir about being in Wicked, and Anna Kendrick's new memoir.

I had some real issues getting into The Three-Body Problem and ended up DNFing it; so it'll be interesting to see what you think of it. For nonfiction: Anything by Bill Bryson, he's hilarious, intelligent, and very thorough. He can make anything interesting. If you're into science, I recommend A Short History of Nearly Everything, or, my favourite, At Home: A History of Private Life. Also, one of the best nonfiction books I've ever read is Going Clear: Scientology, Hollywood, and the Prison of Belief by Lawrence Wright.

Elantris, the girl with all the gifts and Fahrenheit 451 are some of my all time favorites. I like the "Thorne of glass" series much more than the "Court of thorns and roses" series, it just comes across more complex as well as more mature and better developed. p.s.- All the light we cannot see is great.

Out of the Brandon Sandersons you mentioned my favourite is The Emperor's Soul (it was a truly beautiful story) and my least favourite is Warbreaker. Elantris is a solid book but still not on the level of mistborn which is understandable since it was his debut novel. As for the Farseer Trilogy, when I finished it I ended up hating it but it's stuck with me this whole time and I've realized I didn't hate the books I just hated what happened to characters that I loved. The more I think about it the more I appreciate this series because it made me feel such strong emotions. Just be prepared for an emotional roller coaster!

As a person who read both All the Light We Cannot See and The Nightingale, I recommend you read those at different ends of the year. Anthony Doerr is a fantastic author, and you should 100% read All the Light first. Its prose is more taxing, but much more poetic and beautiful, and I think if you read The Nightingale first, you may not want to get through Doerr's anytime soon. Both are great, though!

Hey Emily Fo. My name is Julie. Great choices of books for 2017. I did want to tell you, that I have read/listened to the Assassin's Apprentice by Robin Hobb, and I wanted to warn you that one of the aspects of her writing that tended to throw me off, was the fact that she only includes the thoughts and inner feelings of only 1 character. Which means you will have no idea what is going on in the minds of any other characters. I am used to hearing about each characters perspective, but with her, I just got one. I thought that it was odd. I am going to finish reading/listening to the Harry Potter series, the Ultimate Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galexy series by Douglas Adams, all of the series by Rick Riordan, The Wheel of Time series by Robert Jordan, and I need to get the Brandon Sanderson boiks finished too. Let's not forget the Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children series by Ransom Riggs. I also have about six different biographies that I want to read. I also have some massage textbooks to look into too.

Northanger Abbey is sort of gothic and I haven't read Persuasion. If you want classic ghost stories then Henry James' the Turn of the Screw is quite good. For classics I'm hoping to read Dante's Inferno this year, I read Milton's Paradise Lost a few years ago, and I really enjoyed it, but it might be more difficult for someone whose first language is not English. Historical Fiction: World War 2 books are really interesting. Night by Elie Wiesel is a Holocaust memoir and is beautifully written, and the Book Thief is wonderful and really interesting because it is written from the point of view of Death.

Oh and I also plan to get Wonder Woman by Leigh Bardugo as soon as it's released!!! I'm interested in that new DC Icon series by YA Authors. I also want Catwoman from Sarah J. I read all Jane Austen's books (apart from Mansfield Park, which to this day sits on my shelf unread) when I was in my early teens and I remember really loving "Persuasion", probably one of my faves; all I can say about "Northanger Abbey" is that it's good, but it's very different from Austen's other books. Keep in mind that this is the first novel she wrote - event though it was published later on- and that it's her take on the gothic novel, actually she kinda makes a parody out of it. So if I felt like reading something more "classic" from her, I'd pick Persuasion ;) As far as non-fiction goes I'd recommend a book I read this past year: "Eat sweat play". it's an incredibly interesting book full with knowledge about the role sports could play in women's life and the role women play in sports and all the stigma and taboos that surround them, like periods, pregnancies, body dismorphia, the gender pay gap...it was such an enlightening and thought-provoking read! And as a bonus I'm going to mention one of my favorite books of all time "Tiny beautiful things" by Cheryl Strayed; I highlighted the cr*p out of that book I loved it so much! XD P.S: sorry for the long comment, but I could talk about books forever... :)

I will be interested to see you opinions on these books as the year progresses! A historical fiction series that I so highly recommend is The Tea Rose by Jennifer Donnelly, such an amazing series that I wish I could read over again for the first time. A non-fiction book I raff that year that I really enjoyed was The Devil In The White City by Erik Larsen, it's about the Chicago world's Fair and a very devious man using the fair for his own pursuits, I guess you could say it's historical non-fiction haha

Christiane F. is a really good non-fiction. It's a german book, I don't know if it has been translated in English or French but I think it must have been because it's pretty popular! I really recommend it. ( I read it in Dutch, hence I do not know of an English translation)

For the Jane Austen books, I haven't finished Persuasion yet, but I reccommend Northanger Abbey. I feel it is a lighter book than Persuasion. Also, for non-fiction l am reading The physics of the Impossible by Michio Kaku. Super recommended.
