Thank you everyone for the feedback! This is my first tutorial and clearly I had a lot to learn. I have taken the advice given to me and applied it to my newest videos and incorporated your tips into my sewing. I learned how to sew from watching KZbin videos just 4 months ago, so I am thankful to have sewing experts sharing their experience. Please check out my newest uploads!

I sew one end under on both sides to prepare for a pocket for filter. I sew the right and left edge in about 2" then roll toward the back about 1" towatd the back. I then mark on my fabric piece right side a dot at 1.5" from both right and left corner an again 5.5" both right and left. I curve the elastic to fit the ear as a loop from 1 5" and 5.5". Then I sew the mask closed leaving an opening to right side. Sew all sides except turn opening.

I have to wear it for my entire shift at work and have done a test run this week and this style passed the test! Thank you for this video.

You are doing a great job!!! And there are many times that good enough is really good enough. Or done is better than perfect. I understand why you might not want to use a rotary cutter. There is a learning curve and it is not cheap to buy a good sized mat and several rulers. But depending on what you are going to sew in the future, hoping that we will not all be focusing on masks forever, you will find it invaluable. I love your time, material, efficiency focus. Here is what I do to make some things faster. I cut strips as you did, but I would probably cut the narrow width. After I cut the fabrics, I would sew them together in a long tube. After that, I would cut the tube into the other size pieces. At that point I could slip in the elastics in the ends. I Only do 1 end at a time so that I can chain sew, which someone else mentioned. I sew one seam, sew a stitch or two off fabric and start the next one util I have done them all, or need to replace the bobbin, needle or something. Then I flip them and sew all of the other sides. Once both sides are sewn, I cut the treads. I did this about 15-20 at a time. I find doing just one step at a time speeds up the process for me. I do put wire in the current batch of masks I am making for a specific organization. The instructions tell me to slide it in at a certain point and then stitch around it. I should say I did make a few tests of each step before I committed to doing that for the entire group of 50. I ironed and pinned all of the pleats but I did sew both of those sides at a time. These are not intended as negative comments. I believe that we can all get better with input from others. I am also happy to give advice. I have been sewing for a very long time---started as a young child. But people didn't think or at least didn't tell me about time saving steps. So your expertise is invaluable.

As someone who has batch sewn pockets at work, I would like to offer a Tip to generate more pieces. When you sew the first piece... Start to sew across, then Do a small back tack at the beginning, continue to sew to the other side, and place another back tack at the end....BUT... Don't remove it from the machine...just start sewing the Next piece and continue sewing the next piece, etc. you can cut the first piece free just after your beginning back tack on the second piece. Once you get the first side seemed on all your pieces, then you can sew the second seam, as a group. you Can keep them so they are all connected after the second seam. and just trim them apart after the second seam. that way you are mostly sewing as a group, and not so much fussing with each piece . save the close trimming for when your ready to press.

Lots of mask-making videos out there now, but I especially appreciate your focus on efficiency and speed!💪💜. I have been slicing up densely woven teeshirts into 1.5”-2” strips, to make straps. They automatically curl up from the edges if you cut it in the right direction (experiment to see what works), it’s stretchier than much elastic, strong, and more comfortable on the skin of the wearer. Then I make the loops significantly longer than necessary, and attach the loops across horizontally (instead of vertically), which allows the wearer to fit it properly, then tie it to the right position. The stretchiness means they can put the mask off and back on while the knot stays in place. And waaaay cheaper and easier to find than elastic these days. Thanks so much for your great video!

GOD BLESS YOU. Thank you for being an inspiration to all of us and sharing your EXPERTISE at this crucial time. You're a hero. We are blessed to have people like you in this world. If anyone posts anything negative about your sewing, don't even bother getting upset. Sewing "tips" from those who know are a good thing. People being critical is something else. I've been sewing all of my life and you did a FABULOUS JOB. THANK YOU SO MUCH! PS. For some reason there's always going to be people who are going to criticize others just because they have nothing else to do. It's sad, but don't let their negative karma affect what you do and are doing. Even people giving "advice" need to keep it to themselves. You sew beautifully and after such a short time. Do your own thing and pat yourself on the back. You're doing a wonderful job and I'm proud to subscribe!! NEVER BE DETERRED!

@@PeaJayCee if your sewing ties you can cut on the bias or on the straight
@maryschopper7531
@maryschopper7531 4 жыл бұрын
Princess Peajay We're you asking whether to cut on the bias, or were you asking what cut on the bias means? It means to cut the fabric diagonally. Woven fabric has threads running both horizontally and vertically. These are the straight "grains" of the fabric. When you cut diagonally, the fabric has more stretch. Try it. Take a piece of fabric and give it a pull across either the horizontal or vertical direction. Now give it a pull diagonally from corner to opposite corner. It's stretchy! Sometimes you want this, sometimes you don't. Depends on what you're making. It's fine for ties, but I think you'll find that straight of grain cuts are easier for you to work with in making ties.

I thought you did a great job on your tutorial, especially for someone who is a beginner seamstress. I have a new way to pin those nasty pleats now that should work much easier! Thank you. And thank you for the tip on sizes of masks and sewing in batches.. I have three suggestions for you. •My experience with flannel is that it is definitely not a tightly woven fabric, especially compared to quilter's cotton. And there are different flannels (cheaper ones) that are not remotely close to being tightly woven. I have heard other tutorials suggest having three layers of fabric, using flannel on the inside. •Second, the fabric should be washed first to remove the sizing and stabilizers that are put on fabric at the factories. •And third, because there are so many layers in those ends with the pleats, on the few masks I have made, I have sewn over each short end twice to be sure the pleats do not come undone. Thank you for all the masks you've made for your community. You are being a great help during this critical time.

Multiple comments in 1: I love i found my tiny clothspins for crafts, im using those in place of pins so no extra holes as we want to minimize the amount. 2:I don't have access to any heavier linner or flannel so we got some felt when I went out for groceries a month ago. It works well to do 1 layer of regular cotton or double layer cotton and make the felt removable. My kids hate thicker masks and I can't blame them. But at times we need a thicker kind so I added Velcro, something you can still get. I sewed the thicker felt to the Velcro and make it removable to the mask. Or you can just single cotton and single felt. Just something I found that works for anyone interested! Great video

If this tip helps, I use lycra to make the elastic.....someone gave me some lycra all different colors and almost all colors would roll up into very comfortable elastic when cut in 5/8 inch or 1/2 inch strips crosswise......then you just pull and stretch them and BINGO, there is a very comfortable piece of elastic, it will not make ears or head sore......it is magic and you can get hundreds out of a yard of lycra...........some lycra works better, but all are better to me than making long ties to come untied......if you lived near me I would share some.......I am cutting some now...........however I found some thin tight knits that act almost as good in this way.....but since so many need some I am cutting tonight........

No need for all your “helpful” comments!!! We as women should be encouraging and lifting each other up, not tearing each other down! Uuuugggghhhh! On another note...Amber, great job! You go girl, you rock! New subbie! ❤️ Ignore the negative people. As a friend of mine says “Ain’t got time for that!”

I think you did great!! I do agree with another person, that you could really use a rotary cutter. You'll be amazed at how fast you can cut through your material.

Its good you have worked hard and made the masks and made a video to help people make the quicker, your mask is fine but don't use Flannel is not woven denser, its an open weave fabric that is brushed and brushed to to make it soft, it also absorbs water, and the mask will become wet from breath, thats why flannel is used for nappies, its absorbent, and its to hot, you will over heat quickly wearing it for hours at a time, also the fluff fibers will be breathed up into the nose. If you want detailed information about types of Masks and fabrics, a nurse owns The Fabric Patch, she has made 3 You Tube Videos to explain the materials you should sue in masks, and the different types. I'm a textile manufacture, quilters cotton with iron on woven interfacing for general public masks is what you need, medical masks require a filter.

I agree that flannel is just wrong for masks. It gets damp from breathing and holds on to the germs longer, it's hot, and it's too loosely woven. I also agree with tightly woven cotton, but correct me if I'm wrong, you may have meant to say "non-woven" interfacing.

I use pinking shears to cut or a Rotary cutter ( different blades ) I don’t have elastic and making bias tape is time consuming so I use 100% cotton yarn 🧶 and works nicely 😀 your doing awesome on your video 💕

Amber, Thank You so much! I have watched a ton of videos and yours was perfect for me to understand;) I especially appreciate the sizing measurements! I’m a new sewer as well, so I’m not really good a trying to figure out sizing..myself...I think this is going to help me out tremendously;) I feel like I have wasted a lot by not getting sizing right... thanks again! Can’t wait to see more videos 😊

Amber, great job taking on such a huge undertaking as a new sewer. I have a process background and your were speaking my language when you threw out Lean Six Sigma! There is still some waste in your process so once you get rid of that, you won’t believe how much faster you will go! I am always interested learning and I hope you are as well, so please don’t take these as negative, but to help you... Continuous Improvement so to speak... 1) Motion: Get the right tools (Rotary cutter/ and ruler 8.5x 12 or 24 is a great size.) The time it took you to cut one strip with scissors, I could have cut three or 4. 2) Defect: the right tools will also help you have your pieces be the right size. Seam allowance is really important in sewing (especially quilting) and having the right size piece is critical and cutters and rulers make your life so easy 3] over processing. I couldn’t tell, if you are only cutting one piece of fabric at a time (even doubled), but if you are, you are also doing more than you should. A good rotary blade will cut up to 6-8 layers of fabric easily. 4) Potential Defect, you were cutting from the folded end. Not all fabric is the same width, it can be anywhere from 38-45 inches, so make sure your selvage edges are even, trim them off, and cut from there, or else, you may have more waste than you expect. You WILL always find something to do with leftover pieces. Well done!

That's the thing I love about CI- there is ALWAYS room for improvement. I am well over 700 masks now and my process is already different from what is in the video. I am now chain stitching from the start to save thread and motion. At this point I still prefer a scissors to a rotary cutter. Lots of people have suggested it but I don't have the experience or dexterity yet and to me it feels clumsy and I run over the ruler and what-not a lot.

Something I read, we should be donating masks to animal hospitals, so they can donate their actual N95 masks (mask for mask) to hospitals. Just a thought. You are such an amazing seamstress. Great video, and u have a huge heart. I have a sewing machine but don’t know how to sew. How long did each take u to make?

I'm also a beginner sewer, my first projects were baby blankets, and I used flannel in combination with plush and fleece, flannel shrinks more than regular cotton, so you'll need to pre-wash, elsewise, your project will shrink a bit, with the flannel side shrinking more. If you've ever pre-washed cotton, let alone flannel, you'll know that it falls apart into a tangled mess in the washing machine, and then a bit more in the dryer. I actually purchased a serger for this purpose! You don't need to serge your material though-you can just use a zig-zag stitch to keep your material from fraying. I've found that cotton can be washed without serging if you don't mind losing about a quarter inch from the non selvage edges, but the flannel goes nuts. I would HIGHLY recommend at least folding your material in half and zig-zag stitching it for washing and drying purposes.
