There's a story that said, during the Massacre of Novgorod, that Ivan had very unique forms of execution born from his demented mind. Allegedly, Ivan had a large frying pan created, and he used it to literally roast his enemies. Not to mention the Archbishop of Novgorod was sewn into bear skin and thrown to the dogs. He boiled his treasurer alive in a cauldron. His Councilor was even hung and the Orpichniki took turns hacking the Councilor's limbs off. Suffice to say, when the Russians call you 'the terrible' they're not messing around.

Don't forget that Constantinople just ceased to exist, and turning Russia Catholic would almost eliminate Orthodox Christianity. And Ivan IV was an obstacle to that. That says a lot about our distorted perception of history

The greatest mistake about Ivan IV was the translation of his name to the European languages. 'Grozny' (грозный) does not mean terrible in this case but formidable. Word 'grozny' derives from 'groza' (гроза) - thunderstorm. But as Russia is terrible so one of her greatest tsars historically was called terrible.
