He was a hostage to secure his father's loyalty. I'm guessing he was in a relatively good relationship with the Sultan if they helped him get the throne the first time. Vlad became voivod first with Turkish help and the 2nd and 3rd time with Hungarian help. I also believe he learned a lot about cruelty and torture while he was educated in the Ottoman empire - he obviously brought all that to a different level. While embarrassingly retreating Mehmed stated about Vlad "a man who had done such things was worth much." It's obvious Mehmed respected Vlad.

He had to do whatever he could to defend his country, the West, and Christianity from this threat. Was it truly horrible, yes. But it had to be to stop them. You also didn't specified that turkey pillaged wallachia a shitload of time before Vlad even retaliated. He used 'terror' to defend Wallachia versus x5198519851 ottoman troops. 3. You also didn't specified that Wallachians were subjugated by Ottomans which needed to pay high-tribute, where wallachia didn't had any caps to give. And when tribute was not given: You also didn't specified that ottomans decapited a lot of Wallachians and raided most of the villages just to take tribute, i'm not involving womans here or children but you get my point. 4. You didn't specified the alliance between Vlad and Stephen from Moldova, and you didn't specified that Vlad attacked saxons because they betrayed Vlad and ambushed most of his troops, decapitated of course. 5. You didn't specified that Vlad's efforts saved Austria from conquer becuase he wiped out mos of the ottoman troops which were stationed near Austria (the troops were recalled to constantinople to attack Wallachia) 6. You really made only the 'bad' things about Vlad & Wallachia, everything out of context, like everything. He did some horror things? Of course. But how he got to make them, why, what's the purpose, what's the context? Ottomans didn't did the same in a way? --- Like for real right now, i can say about your country [United States] that did some revolution and killed/decapitated and even abused most of the British people (which practically founded some parts of america). We can make a video also about United States about how they killed off most of the native population, in concentration camps or even displaced them in various locations (For the american dream). About how 'United States' wiped out Iraq just for oil and in that 'trade' millions died and had their limbs all over the place (we can say about Syria as well). Let's don't talk about 'rasism' and 'slaves' which were loved by you people, at least Wallachia/Transilvania didn't had that 'free workforce'. You guys even have 'thanks-giving' which if you get into that story you'll see how horrific it is. Is this an informative video or it's just for views? Facts that were missed, he was an educated man, spoke fluent Turkish, Romanian, Hungarian, Saxon, his possible birthplace was in Transylvania as his family fled during that time from House of Danesti, he was kidnapped when he was a child by Ottomans along with his brother, they were both raised in Ottoman culture, received military training, they were prepared to become puppet price rulers, Vlad learned the torture techniques from the Ottomans, and he made it sure in his mind to use these tactics against them when he grows older, also he was very skilled with the sword and yatagan (Turkish sword), in many battles he asked the adversaries to bring their best warrior to face him in one vs one battle in order to avoid further casualties from the army, also he challenged Dan to a sword dual before he executed him, giving him a chance, and Vlad won. Also he impaled mostly thieves and enemies, there's a legend that a golden cup would stand near a fountain in the center of the capital of Wallachia, nobody dared to steal it, and everybody could admire or drink from it, but nobody dared to take it, a symbol of his power and order in Wallachia.

Throughout history, Romania was heavily conquered by numerous nations. Vlad loved and wanted to protect his country and people from the invaders, that's why he was so ruthless. Saying that he had guts would be an understatement. He was also an impressive tactician. When a huge ottoman army came to wreak havoc, he set his own villages on fire, poisoned all the wells and hid his own army in order to take the tired ottomans by surprise.

Vlad created "The Forest of the Impaled Corpses" as he perceived it to be the only language that the Turks would comprehend. By speaking to them in their own manner, he left Mehmet II immensely impressed. The underlying lesson is, "When facing a swordsman, draw your sword; do not recite poetry to someone who does not appreciate it." - Robert Greene

Yet another video that only says what the victors would want you to say, instead of what actually happened. What you should think about is that since Vlad was a hostage for his whole early life, he learnt a lot from the ottomans, including how to use fear as a weapon, which is exactly what he did. He wasn’t some psychopath, he just did what he had learnt by the enemy. It’s also worth noting that he was a very good leader for his people, but I guess that’s not worth mentioning, since that wouldn’t fit your very naive narrative.
