As a Malagasy, I've been taught history of this queen and yes, she has been considered as one of the cruelest in history of the island. However, many people in my country continue to see her as a nationalist queen who loved her country and didn't want to let it under European hands. Many people in Madagascar see her as a national hero as she fought extremely hard against the European colonizers who exploited the indigenous people. Her successors were more tolerant towards Christianity which lead to colonization which was horrible for them. I doubt she was horrible as she would have lost power extremely soon. The British are known for spreading rumours about the Rani of Jhansi of how she was evil when in real life she was popular not only with her own subjects but others from far away parts of India. Till today, we Indians honour her memory and are taught about her in school.
