The cops should have taken him to the hospital immediately( I thought this was mandatory for even the most mild injuries, criminal or victim). He was acting odd with a lot of damage to the face. At minimum that would be concussion. If he was in a fight with his gf why was she not injured other than the gunshot, where was the gun. There were so many red flags that I think the cops dropped the ball massively.

So far as I know, neither of you are in the medical or law enforcement fields, so I understand why you came to the conclusions you did as you were watching. As soon as that investigator heard the words, "I was shot in the eye" he should have had the training and common sense to make sure he was looked at immediately. Heck. It shouldn't have even taken that long. I've only had basic medical training, but even I recognized that there was probably something medical going on. They should have done better with this one. How he wasn't looked over by the medics, I'll never know. How could they have looked at that guy and not known something was wrong? I understand it if you're a total layman, but these are supposed to be trained detectives. How about you notice the bloody obvious and start from there.

This is why everyone should be treated as innocent until proven guilty and taken to hospital if there are ANY injuries/possible injuries. This was probably the most shocking mr ballen video for me, and saddest. Police put him in squad car on scene for 8 hrs before going to station. For what? They judged him immediately and wanted to implement their own form of punishment first. As soon as someone is in custody, the pd is responsible for their safety. Thats why you see suspects with any ole scrape on the knee being checked out by emt or taken away by ambulance first if they show any sign of injury. Medical attention came to look at heather, and instead of getting him medical attention as well they left him handcuffed in their vehicle for hours and hours. It doesn't matter what he did in the cops minds at that point, he should've received medical attention especially since they believed he was wounded because his girlfriend fought back against him. The hard part about reading him is that his brain is sorta going through different stages of different ages. Childlike and passive to older and somewhat confident.

Yeah, I think in order to go in, they'd have to see evidence of a crime, ie. door busted, blood, etc. Otherwise, they can't do anything. There was a case here in Florida where a man killed his entire family and the police did multiple welfare checks but never entered the house. No one knew what was going on until a neighbor called because the murderer was sitting on the porch, acting odd so he called the police.

This is so sad, one of the only cases that made me choke up. The police did mishandle it, you're supposed to rush injured people at a crime scene to the hospital, suspect or not. But like you said, it had already been like 48 hours, those extra 8 hours wouldn't have done much more damage most likely. He probably would have ended up more or less the same. Rest in peace, Heather and Ryan 💔
@kilgh
@kilgh 2 жыл бұрын
I predicted this from his initial behaviour what the story was instantly. Confabulation and brain damage go together. But another great lesson on "assuming" in police work. It often ends up very badly for the innocent. Those first 48 hours would have done the most damage unless the bleed was still happening. Leaking away slowly. But the police should always give medical attention no matter what. How did they figure the blood by the sliding door and all the blood on Ryan's pillow? If Heather died on the couch? The evidence would have been there. If they wanted to look for it.

tbh as much as it sucks, once you actually understand police procedure it makes a little more sense how it would of been missed. It started as a welfare check so it mostly just involved normal police officers who dont usually get mixed up in homicide. So when they found the dead girl they just detained him, while they had to call it in. And as you said it had already been 2 days so yeah blood would dry and the bullet holes would be less noticable and just looks like a black eye. If it had been a normal homicide call paramedics would have been there and he would have definitely been looked at more thoroughly before being detained. but since it was just a check up, no one would of known what to expect. So all the while he's in the back of the car, once he got to the police station he would have got booked straight away and immediately placed into holding while he awaited his interrogation. So because he was found next to a dead girl the police kinda have to assume the worst because if he had been the killer he might attack the police officer or try to slip away. SO yes they have to detain them. But because it really was just a standard check in the only time someone really might have had the chance to actually notice that his was injured more than he says he is, would be when they are sitting across from him in the interrogation. Feel bad it happened and hope his parents find some sort of solace, but it is easy to understand when you take into consider all circumstances how this might have gone unnoticed. I do hope nothing like this happens again, but as kidd said he had basically already been stumbling around for about 48 hours. so all that internal bleeding would have been already in effect with permanent damage of his mind.

Sorry, this just sucks because I could tell right away that his brain is actually going through different stages of trauma and I can’t stand that other people couldn’t notice this and reacted as if he was guilty until proven innocence. This is sad because I never thought these things when first watching so my mind is incapable of comprehending how everyone immediately believed he was simply acting or lying on purpose. I get that y’all were reaching and I’m glad you guys said that but it’s heartbreaking for me to remember that none of this could’ve had happened. you can definitely blame the police for at least a part of this, even with the brain damage that had already been happening over the last 48 ish hours, that extra 8 ish hours still definitely made a difference. while the outcome would have probably still been the same for ryan, maybe had he got immediate medical attention more of his brain would have been saved (its obviously all hypothetical at this point since this all happened over 10 years ago). that extra 8 hours of his brain slowly degrading was still an extra 8 hours of degradation that shouldnt have been happening. they didnt even have any of the paramedics at the scene look at him. even if he did it or not, the fact he had any visible injury meant he should have been looked at by a paramedic and at least some of this could have been avoided. the detective doing the interrogation, and intake, literally anyone who interacted with him should have noticed something was not right before he got into that interrogation room.

Also this case is why you should put some gun laws in your country. This is literally the definition why that future law was placed. First reaction of Richi to get revenge for being kicked out is to get a gun and kill them. Bro the f.... is wrong with you all. Taking a life is the ultimate and final sin .... and to get from getting angry and THAT, to be the only choice or solution or whatever you call it, to be what you think you have to do.... So sad. I'm pretty sure the police get you medical attention, even if you're a suspect. They were definitely negligent. Yes, he was already losing significant time with those three days before the welfare check, but they had his head going when they showed up, put him in a cop car, them interrogated him.

Wouldn't a diligent police officer gone around the back of the house first time. Look thru the glass door or poked his head in. Seen the blood/splatter or the bullet holes? What I've seen, most of the welfare checks. They go around the house. How did they miss that in the kitchen when they went in the second time? May they RIP.

I did a term paper for this in my Famous Crimes and Trials college class. The story Mr. Ballen has told is now out of date. Most aspects of the case he discussed is true but some of it is not. Thankfully, the 'this is MONSTERS' channel did interviews with Ryan's dad and actually looked at case files. The police showed up to Ryan's house and knocked at the front door. No one answered so they went to the back. They peeked into the window and thought they saw a body. Police then gathered and tried to pick the lock before Ryan heard and then opened the back door. When Ryan opened the door, the group of police tackled him which is presumed to have cause more damage to his head. Richie's motive was different than the one stated in the video. Richie was the previous owner of the house. Richie and Ryan never lived together. Richie had previously been over to the house after Ryan moved in claiming he lost an iguana. That was when he saw Ryan had some valuable guitars and a nice computer. Richie and his father were trying to steal from Ryan the night of the incident. They successfully did so because those items have never been found since. Heather never knew Richie. The final thing is that police tried to cover up the case to make it seem like the damage done to Ryan's brain was not their fault but rather the fault of time. Police claimed that the crime happened on the 23rd of December but Ryan's father, Don, claims Ryaan had been helping him remodel his bathroom. The actual day the crime to place was the same day Ryan was arrested which was Christmas day. Cops even had the coroner change Heather's time of death to the 23rd after the coroner had logged it as the 25th already. So much shady shit happened with this case, and I hope that the actual story begins to spread more than the videos that have been posted before the documentary.

I know suing that police dept. would not bring their son back whole, but it could have helped them & Ryan in his life. The fact is they were very negligent at the very least. Anyone could see he was very injured and needed medical attention first, then you can interview a suspect. 6 hours? That is abuse......in pretty much ANY case in my opinion to sit in a car for that long. Even after realizing their mistake the officer seemed uncaring to me....just having him sit and wait on the ambulance rather than at least rendering some kind of help....if nothing more than kind words, and making him comfortable. This story just hurts my heart every time I watch a reaction to it.

Nah that same way you come to conclusions sir. And what the cop did was wrong in so many way. no excuse at all. and now you see? Because of the lack care the police gave to Ryan he suffering more 8 hours brain damage. And that make him suffer more then 10 year till he die. That's horrible so horrible and poor man

I think people are going too hard on the police, this was a very unusual case. I mean, you see a guy who's alive and a girl whos dead and you're of course going to come to the conclusion that they're the killer. Say what you will but I really don't think those "critical 8 hours after he was found" would have made any difference for 2 main reasons. 1. He was already said to probably have been like that for TWO days, unable to remember or process anything that had happened and just kinda went about his day wandering the house or whatever and 2. When he answered the door and they found him he was already loopy and answering very weirdly. Either way I don't necessarily blame the police here because people DO try to lie and get out of something when they get caught, and honestly it did take me a while to guess something wasn't right after he started saying stuff like "bows and arrows" and "I meant revolver" when challenged and naming out some random people that was when I guessed something wasn't right. And that was around the time Dalton (that's how you spell his name?) figured out something might not have been right and then observed him and called an ambulance. Sure, you could blame someone or everyone in this situation but really could any of us done any better? Probably a question we can't answer and I think we should be a bit more graceful and understanding because like I said... this wasn't any normal homicide case and I really would've thought he was the killer at first because that's what the crime scene looked like at the time. It was just him and her in that house. I'll admit they could have given him medical attention at that point with that black eye but looking at that I wouldn't think anything was wrong with him except maybe some defensive wounds from the victim maybe. Like a bad punch to the eye for example. Either way, that was just a horrible crime and outcome for it. And all because the guy didnt want that Richie guy hittin' on his girl. Like who does that when they're doing you the favor of staying in your house? Like. Wow...

The fact is this all happened on the same day-the shooting and the welfare check. Don, Ryan’s dad did an interview on the KZbin channel, this is Monster’s called Searching For Justice:The Ryan Waller Story. The facts Mr Ballen had were the facts from the media but they didn’t have the right facts.

'Could have given him the medical attention' rubs me the wrong way. He should have given medical attention. Everyone has the right to medical treatment, doesn't matter if you're innocent or guilt. That's why I don't agree with why we shouldn't be to hard on the police department.
