I don't wash my Gi every day, because I feel it honestly doesn't get rank enough (inside or outside), but at minimum I do it once every 3-4 classes. RG are obviously an absolute must. I have changed my RG during a 2 hour no-gi class before haha.

The gauntlet is a great opportunity to see who is whipping you the hardest, so that when it's their turn you get your revenge.

42 yr old (3) striped blue, in the Houston, TX area. I started BJJ, originally, in 1999 and received my blue belt in 2002. I quit in 2003 and came back late 2019 early 2020. I have been through a boatload of promotions from blue, purple, brown, and black belts. I have never heard of or seen anything in regards to the gauntlet.

I think the gauntlet is alot.of fun and honestly you only have potentially have 4 to walk and most people have years between them so I say just have fun and do it. But of course you shouldn't have to if you don't want to, I just feel it builds that team spirit.

On the topic of Darce and arm in guillotine, I have lengthy arms yet I use that the shallow darce more than full

I always get more taps when the darce is shallow compared to deep. I think the shallow darce forces their chin down into their chest more making it harder to fight

Love your podcast, guys. I have five Gis and wait until the end of the week to wash them all at once to save water. Gis are not that expensive if you buy them on sale like on Black Friday.

Do you have issues with how they smell? I wash mine immediately after practice because the longer those bacteria have time to multiply the worse odors they put out
@wm6549

@@badxradxandy I don't notice any smell before or after I wash the Gis. I leave them in a pile next to my wife's desk. If it smelled even a bit she would not hesitate to let me know.

white vinegar and baking soda in a 5 gallon bucket to soak your rash guard by itself, then do this for your Gi Top and Gi Pants. In my experience rolling at a large gym with more students you're Gi and No Gi attire is going to get pretty gross even after only one class. Always wash right away after class and HANG dry on a line/string IN THE SUN. The only thing that is going to really kill MAT FUNK is direct sunlight. Don't believe it? Try it and do "the smell test".

True sub only is no time limit, anything else is a hybrid ruleset. The only thing with no time limit is that it's not appealing to spectators, the best rulset for our sport is ADCC or some point system minus advantage points. When it's "subonly" with ref decision then it can come down to a refs subjective POV, where as points is more objective, if I don't submit you but I positionally dominate you and got the points, then I win.

I switched gyms after I did $2,000 bucks of privates with my professor at my first gym. I was 280lbs and losing a ton of weight training everyday but the only other guy close to my weight only showed up for one class a week. Everybody else was under 200 lbs. I was drilling with one of the new guys and he got injured a minor hand injury he moved his hand to point on the mat where my foot should go as I was moving it there and I squished his hand fracturing his thumb WHITE BELT Professoring is always a bad idea if you're wearing white stfu and raise your hand get coaches attention and ask for help. Between the lack of classes (only 4 a week ALL weekday classes) and no one in the gym near my size I did a trial class at a way larger school and found my class (they had 3 classes a day morning, noon, and night). My point is I invested a lot into my first school and I realize now I should've "shopped" around "dated" my first gym. I learned a lot at my first gym but ultimately for for more than one reason it wasn't the right place for me. Morale of the story at a bare minimum do trial classes (an open mat day isn't that great of a representation of the gym/school) at other gyms. You might find better suited rolling partners and better class schedules.

The only time I realistically use my 2nd gi is if I were to train twice in the same day. It is really nice to bring a spare to tournaments as well. You never know how long you'll have to wait between matches, especially if you plan on competing in both your weight class and open weight.

I've seen some videos of gyms that when someone gets promoted they have to roll with all the higher belts while everyone watches. I think I'd personally enjoy that more than walking the gauntlet but I don't have to worry about that anytime soon lol
