Now we just need a mod where you can permanently attach an ED64 to boot when there's no cartridge, and real carts override. So no cart boots ED64, and a real cart inserted boots straight in to that instead.
@MelodicTurtleMetal
@MelodicTurtleMetal 4 жыл бұрын
Wouldn't be too difficult, if you don't care about access to the sd card. The cartridge contents are quite small and can be easily fixed inside the N64. You would need to make some kind of spring connectors and solder the pins to them, and have it separate when a cartridge gets put in, separating the connection to the ed64 and letting the normal pins attach.. I might do it. Sounds like a lot of wires and soldering, but maybe I'll think of something easier

@@tyisafk Seems like a lot of work for marginal improvements. Something better would be a wireless on/off and reset so he can easily save his game and jump into another game would be cooler. I've seen someone do this mod on their N64 and it looked nice without any power button or reset on the top. You could even go as far as installing that remote on your primary controller, though I would put it somewhere you won't accidentally push them while you're playing.

You can get 8 Megabyte SRAM chips now, so hypothetically you could give an N64 (the model with two RDRAM chips on the motherboard) a whopping 16 megabytes of Static RAM, which should have lower access latencies than the RDRAM you would be replacing, and thus result in better performance. However, you'd probably need to modify the memory controller inside the Reality Co-Processor in order to bypass the RDRAM functions so that you could actually use the Static RAM.

never gets too hot with normal use. When I was a kid, I never had a memory pack (most games save on cart, so no biggie). Well, Tony Hawk didnt save on cart and I wanted to beat it. Played it after school, got halfway, left it paused for later. Came home and the picture was all wavy and discolored. System was pretty hot. Grabbed a small fan and pointed it at the n64 and it got better.

The battery in the new versions isnt for gamesaves. Its for the real time clock and also to prevent you from losing your data when you turn off the console. Thats why in the 2.4 version you need to hold the reset button, but the 3.0 and x7 you dont. Im sure the cartridge has SRAM but its only temporary during the play session. The crazy "hotswap" only applies to original cartridges and memory cards.

I'd probably use an nvSRAM and a supercapacitor in the EverDrive and Controller Paks, since it would self-recharge, and once the data is saved it can completely turn off, lasting indefinitely (as opposed to just 10 years as in FRAM). I'd probably also hack the EverDrive 3.0 firmware so that it would have a save editor as well. And for that reset box, I'd probably use paracord with it and add some super grippy feet.

Not a criticism, just a note: MLCC capacitors aren't strictly "better" per se, and in some cases, they may not be sufficient for the system's needs - some of the Game Gear/Nomad modders have found this out. Their main advantage is that they won't fail like traditional electrolytics by drying out or popping, spraying your important vintage electronics with that juicy acidic sweetness. Also, as CNLohr found out, cheap capacitors (tantalum in his case) can be a little... spicy. Explosively so.

You obviously have no clue what your talking about. The brawler64 is only 30 bucks just 20 more than the new joystick for an oem. The brawler64 joysticks is a dream, a near match to the original. The china crap $10 joysticks dont even come close to emulating the original controller. Huge deadspot in the center and highly oversensitive. Pure garbage. Most if not all games are unplayable with those joysticks. But dont take my advice try a brawler for yourself its amazing!

@@Blair88mph I'm talking about buying replacement gears, a replacement bowl, and a replacement stick from kitsch bent or steelsticks and rebuilding the original stick, restoring it to near factory condition. @@Blair88mph the brawler 64 is ten degrees on average more sensitive then the original. It changes the feel of a lot of games because they were all designed for the n64 controllers sensitivity. It's also a strange thing where in some games you'll feel no difference or alot of difference, this goes for every console that has used analog sticks. I'd try to play a game with a regular n64 controller that's in good condition for an hour. Then switch to the brawler 64 you'll probably feel a difference that way.
@Blair88mph
@Blair88mph 4 жыл бұрын
@@BonswallyI will 100% agree that a right out of the box brand new oem controller is the best controller for the n64. If nintendo would make an official replacement joystick that would solve it. The china replacements available are all bad. I looked into replacing the warn joystick internal parts but the company doing this had everything out of stock and the prices were rediculus. If you can hook me up with a better option I would be totally open to it. Long story short oem is dead to me. They are all warn to hell and im not buying a mint in package and opening it up. So for $30 the brawler64 is a good option.

@@Blair88mph The gears, bowl, and stick will run you about $10 on kitsch bent, but yes it can be hard to get them before they sell out. I recall I ordered my bowls from Kitsch bent and got the gears and stick on ebay. Replacing just the gears and stick generally solves 90% of the problem. A worldwide search on ebay for "n64 gears" and "n64 stick" should do the trick.

micro-64.com/database/gamesave.shtml The n64 has 5 different types of save types. Only games that use the controller pak will have the memory menu. I cant guarantee all the pak save games have them but I think almost all do. On that site is a list of games that use the controller pak. Should steer you in the right direction. The are also not all the same. Some have crap menus where you can only edit the game game filea and not all files on the pak. The one I chose in the video is the best out of the 4 I tried and stuck with that.

@@Blair88mph Have you tried loading that game's rom from the Everdrive 64 while pressing START? I asked in the forum and they say it works from there. As an alternative there is also a homebrew called "Controller-Pak-Manager" from manfriedn64 on github.
