In this installment, I install the N64Digital video mod-kit by PixelFX. This is a from start-to-finish installation with thorough instruction as well as the demonstration of additional techniques that anyone can use to remove solder bridges or "blobs" that can otherwise wreck a perfectly good installation!

You are such a good honest down to earth dude. Not trash talking the product just stating your opinion while still promoting it and saying nothing better could be had. Glad to see you sticking to your values and being a great person all these years since I knew you almost going on a decade now since I used to modorate TIZ and you frequented there so often. Oh and also congrats on the 80k subs man, you deserve it.

Finally! The sensual soldering experience I've been waiting for! I saw the other videos popping up in my feed as well. And after watching them all I could think was how our Lord Voultar would come through and show a premium version of this installation. That and some of the ribbon soldering techniques were atrocious.

Thank you my Lord!!! After watching your channel and this particular video a thousand & one times, I just finished installing my N64 Digital kit successfully! (And I've only had my KSGER soldering station for a little over a week now.) Thank you for coming back to the scene, and continuing to teach us mortals the art of "clean & safe soldering technique." I appreciate and enjoy learning from you! Hope you and yours had a Merry Christmas, and a Happy New Year!!! 😎 🤜🤛

For me, where this kit really shines is with the scanline filter. It looks amazing, and I haven't seen anyone talking about it. Maybe most people don't like it, I guess. It's completely a matter of personal preference.

I learned everything I know about soldering from watching your channel. It inspired me to buy decent gear and supplies, and I got ahold of a scrap board for practice. With your clear, concise instruction I caught on quickly. Since then I've gone on to apply these skills to numerous Electronic, Household, and even Automotive repair and modification applications. Your videos have broadened my horizons and I look forward to each new video.

1. Clean your freaking systems before you send them off to get repaired. What if something is still alive when it gets there?? 2. I love this install video. Not removing the expansion pack and leaving the 5,000 screws in the N64 board were a HUGE time saver. 3. I fully agree with the statement about not buying the Ultra HDMI. I finally got my hw2. While I love some of its features, it's only a matter of time before PixelFX catches up with it in firmware updates and then surpasses it. Ultra HDMI v2 is a great product, but for the production time and communication from Marshall it's not worth waiting for when products like PixelFX and Retrotink 5X are finally available. But for anyone that is still in that dumpster fire of a thread, know that Ichinisan and his brother CZroe are working constant late nights to get product into people's hands and refunds back into wallets. It's slow, but it's rolling.

Couldn't agree more with you!! I never liked this console, in fact, for me was a major disappointed coming from games with graphics such as Killer instinct, donkey Kong, MK 1 2 3 and ultimate and many other (mainly from RARE) I thought that the next thing would be INCREDIBLE but instead... The amount of horrible looking polygons, ugly looking characters as in golden eye and practically every 3D game out there made me hate this generation of consoles. It wasn't until Dreamcast, GameCube and PS2 that I recovered my faith in videogames !

Despite of the fact that the n64 didn't catch your attention, is important to point out for other people, that no matter how big the PS1 library was in that era, the higher highs of the n64 changed the industry. While PS1 delivered traditional dpad controllers (or analog ones that were poor supported by some games, since the base gameplay demanded to be coded with dpads in mind, since the analog controllers were a non-default accessory), the n64 was indeed, delivering 3d gameplay wise. Yes, the ps1 sold 4 times more than the n64, was much more popular, had the best rpgs, etc... But the gameplay of those games, was always something that felt it could be better, less stiff, more modern, etc. The Resident Evil series, Tomb Raider, don't have that tank gameplay because it was the desire of the developers, it was a solution for the outdated out of the box ps1 technology. Of course, not everygame could benefit of modern analog control, 2d fighting games, platform, beat'n'ups were terrible on analog stick, but at that time, those games were kind of despised, because 3d graphics/gameplay were all the rage then. The n64 stablished things like: lock aim (Zelda Ocarina of Time), analog controls, functional FPS games on console, 3d gameplay, camera control, high resolution (expansion pak). All of this still a thing today. I can't remember any inovation at all of PS1 that still a thing. Maybe dual L and R and Analog stick, but this is not new technology, is justing add more of something that already exists.

Voultar as always the best, greetings from Chile. It hurts not to have that quality and products here in my country. I bought your n64 RGB chip a few years ago and installed it on my own and it is fantastic to use it with the hd retrovision cable, but N64 in my opinion you have to be a big fan of it because graphically it is not the great wonder except for some games, such like Zelda, Castlevania and Conker. and the HDMI and Component Cable do not work miracles

I really think that ribbon cable should be redesigned. Much like what you said, it's dumb to need your own individual cables to solder to the flex cable. However my biggest gripe is knowing that the cable is expensive, then they ask you to do a lazy flip with it just to get another lead in position. Aside from possibly ruining the cable from over bending it, once it's actually connected the whole thing looks a bit ugly IMO. I'm also a little concerned with the fact that the ribbon cable has to lay on top of some of those chips. With that cable getting between the heatsink and the chips, wouldn't that effectively cook the cable?
@Voultar
@Voultar 3 жыл бұрын
Personally, I completely agree with you. I don't like the implementation of the current FFC cable for the N64Digital. Having to break out these soldering connects by hand defeats the purpose, all together, IMO.

Got HW1 of the mod in 2021, was gonna try to have you install it but your work load was too much. Despite that, you directed me to use the no cut and get retro frog’s adapter which kept me from cutting plastic while keeping my dual output dreams. But after a good year of practice on GB and GBA games and doing a SNESjr RGB install, finally did it myself with your video in combination of LI Retro and Dubesinhower. (I was also able recap the system too) Have a CPU-8 like the video and surprisingly with your methods, absolutely crazy how easy it was to get the main flex cable installed on the cpu legs. Thanks for the vid and personal help, (and the 3 snes boards i busted by pulling pads with bad solder and flux while learning to solder)❤

Totally agree with you about Marshall’s treatment of the community regarding the Ultra HDMI. Pretty much every step of the way he seemed to stumble upon the best way to frustrate and inconvenience every single person who had interest in his product. If he had just an ounce of customer focus he could have massively cleaned up financially with this product. Instead, his anti consumer assholish behaviour led to the birth of multiple competitors and his elimination from the market. Good riddance.

I keep waffling back and forth between the mClassic with Super64, or doing the HDMI mod. They both have their pros and cons, and the work of installing the N64Digital is well within my skillset, but then again there is satisfaction and bragging rights of "yeah I soldered in an HDMI output" LOL Great video as well. I consider myself highly skilled with soldering, so I always end up critiquing all these install videos in my head, and looking to see if there are methods from others that are worth trying that I could learn something new with, and the way you walk through the steps and error correction is outstanding. Keep up the great work.

I have owned every Nintendo console up to now, I actually find the N64 the worst for me, I found Mario and Zelda games good but overrated, the consoles shortcomings just sealed the deal for me especially the fact it used carts that meant games could be double the cost of Playstation and later Dreamcast yet were cut down versions i.e sound, video, content. So for me I could play the famous 1st/2nd party exclusives and enjoy them but it wasn't a main console for me, even the Saturn outdid it by far for me, great fighters, cheap games due its early death, worked as a cheap cd player etc.
