I've been Netflix style bingeing your videos for the past couple of weeks, and just wanted to drop a comment to encourage you in your work. It's been very enlightening and entertaining. You have a great nack for communicating the complicated in very understandable manner. A question came to mind as I watched: You listed three forms of matter: 1) Dark Energy, 2) Dark matter, 3) Baryonic Matter...from your previous videos, you've touched on a lot of the research happening in each of these individual catergories. Is there significant research in learning how these categories are interacting with each other? Not sure if that's a valid question, or it's an obvious answer I'm just not seeing yet. But anyways, Thanks! Good stuff...
@joescott
@joescott 6 жыл бұрын
I appreciate the kind words, thanks! To your question, I think the way dark matter interacts with baryonic (normal) matter is one of the big questions of astronomy right now. It affects it gravitationally, but doesn't interact with it in any other way. That's flipping weird.
@andrewelliott8758
@andrewelliott8758 6 жыл бұрын
You're quite welcome! I also, figured that studies are currently focused on identifying what dark matter is in the first place. It's an interesting balance of indentifying what the properties of dark matter are and how those properties affect baryonic matter vs. seeing the affects of dark matter on baryonic and inferring it's properties that way.

I love your question I never thought about it like that. The more we learn the more questions pop up It is a very exciting time to be alive. We are moving much faster than I could ever imagine when I was growing up. Who would have thought that I could be exposed to all of this knowledge with out being in a University. And to have it in the palm of my hand Like I said it is a very exciting time to be alive

Do a video on The Electric Universe (or at least research it). It disputes the Dark Matter hypothesis (because that's what it is, it's totally scientifically unproven), and it disputes many of the extremely complicated physics math for a considerably simpler explanation of how the universe works. It's very interesting, and if you have an open mind, it answers a LOT of questionable points of how we currently understand space and the universe. Scientists at large don't give it a chance because they're way too invested in the heavy math and Einstein's Relativity (which even Einstein wasn't happy about, because it left too many questions).

Hi Joe, here's a creative suggestion. When you switched from your primary camera to the 'Tangent Cam' there was an obvious quality shift. An option would be to process the output of the 'Tangent Cam' to monochrome and bump up the contrast a bit to match your primary. Then the secondary camera looks like a creative choice and not that you shot it on your phone. BTW, great content as always.

Hey Joe! I love your work, it’s refreshing in a world of chaos... I want to throw out an idea that I haven’t seen discussed before. You touched on what would happen if Venus or Mars were pulled out (for whatever reason) of its orbit around the sun, we won’t ever really have to worry about that... but how about if we mine a large chuck of the asteroid belt? Would that upset the balance enough to throw us closer or further away from the sun? You flesh it out! Thanks!

Signed up for Brilliant.org. Shows like yours and PBS Space Time (and others that delve into the mysteries of physics, quantum mechanics, and cosmology) have rekindled a curiosity that even 6 year old me couldn't top. It blows my mind how much we've known about the universe and even more so for how long. Even though grade schools always made me feel like what they've taught us is everything we can or need to know about the universe when in fact it's so much more fascinating and mysterious. Part of me wishes I was keyed into these dazzling phenomenons and questions earlier in life but I'm excited that I get to be in the middle of the age of some of the most fascinating physics being done since the 20s and 30s. Here's to hoping for a unified theory in our lifetimes but that what comes out the other side is even stranger!

Cause when you were thalking about barionic matter you sait when is't more of it it forms heavier elements like lithium... And few minutes after that, around 3:35 when talking about high energy cosmic rays you sait that 3% of them are made of lighter elements like lithium berilium and boron...

About questions leading to even more questions: It often seems like it never ends, but there are actually sciences that are finished like Anatomy. We have entirely examined how the human body is constructed, even microscopically including which neurons are going where. In the case of the brain we just don't understand HOW it works, but that's a different science called physiology. Anyway, astronomy will also finish some day (like geography) since there is a finite amount of things to observe.

Correction: when you peel back the layers of an onion there are actually smaller layers underneath.... this is the only correction I will ever be able to provide this channel 😯

Maybe we're in the middle of the onion (which we are in a sense) and eating our way out, then we'd discover bigger onion layers on the outside. I liken the mysteries of the universe to a jigsaw puzzle in an unlabelled box, where someone gives you a few pieces, a couple coming together to make a picture of half a playing card gripped in a dog's claw (for instance). That's when you realise that the picture has to be a lot, lot bigger, gradually handed a few more pieces to fit (but often find pieces that don't go seem to go anywhere), and you really don't know how many more jigsaw pieces there are until the picture is complete. I always wonder why anyone really thinks that the universe suddenly expanded in a uniform way in the first place. We have a 'road map' of the 'observable universe,' yes, but that's observable and causes us to 'assume' certain shapes and ideals based on the strength of what we currently see/detect. I wonder if we may be thinking in the same erroneous way that primitives and flat earthers do, when assuming that because the world looks flat and disc-shaped as they physically turn on the spot on ground level, they think that's what shape the world is. There may well be all sorts of phenomena that formed in the first few micro-moments of the Big Bang that temporarily caused matter to jet out way beyond the theoretical spherical/saddle/flat/donut shapes scientists presently accept, some matter causing unforeseen obstructions, or even to cause invisible sinks so matter is taken out of reach of our present measurement instruments or beyond our dimension altogether (perhaps returning from whence it came).
