the thing about Denzel in "X" is that he refused to study and mimic the cadence and intonation and pronunciation of Malcolm. In other words, he was lazy and arrogant. The problem with Spike is that he didn't care enough to insist that Denzel do a proper job...but then, the entire movie was revisionism.

If you've read the book he's actually pretty solid casting as Paul Atreides. In the novel Paul is like 15 and is described as small for his age, thin face with long black hair. While Chalamet is a decade older than the role he still believably looks like a teenager as compared to Kyle MacLachlan in the David Lynch film which is ironic because both were the same age (around 24) when they played the role. I don't think you would've gotten as good of a performance from an actual teenaged actor.

Emma Watson. She's very pretty but isn't a very good actress. I’ve noticed that she always plays some variation of the same “intelligent” character, and she plays them rather stiffly. Her mannerisms are largely the same in all of her movies, and her range is very limited. Her acting is also very inflexible. She is only capable of a few facial expressions (primarily the same neutral look that is stiff and emotionless, with an overemphasis on using her eyebrows to portray emotions). You can always tell that she's acting. Then there's the fact that her delivery is not the best and she sucks at taking on different accents, especially when it came to her American roles (The Perks of Being a Wallflower, Little Women). She also lacks screen presence and charisma, which was very evident when she was given the lead role in The Circle (2017).
@MrSteadiman10 күн бұрын
I think the industry or even .. herself agrees with you as she has not worked as an actress for years now : you mentionned her leading role in the Circle in 2017, she was a secondary role in Little Women in 2019 and nothing since, except.. her campaign for Prada. I reckon the problem might come from the probable typecasting she's suffered from her original Harry Potter role. It might be hard to have directors imagine her as something else. She might need a renaissance like Mcconaughey

BUT NONE of those guys are at the level of the aforementioned 3. Those three transcended acting, they BECOME someone else entirely in their performances. @@TheVanillatech You say he isnt even "in the same league" as those you mentioned as if he's MILES away, like no kind of way on Earth is Denzel even WORTHY of being mentioned with the likes of them. That is insane and disrespectful. Streep, Brando, and Daniel Day are obviously legends, but to say Denzel isnt a part of that group is not true in any sense. Who your GOAT is is purely subjective. Denzel Washington: Academy Awards: 10 noms, won 2 Emmy’s: 2 noms Golden Globes: 10 noms, won 2 Screen Actos Guild: 8 noms, won 1 Tony Awards: 2 noms, won 1 So to look at all of that and say to yourself, "Oh he works so hard, he's a great actor, he works hard. Did I mention he works hard?" I know I'm exaggerating a bit on your comments, but you mention those things as if needs help in justifying his greatness. Many actors "work hard", but Denzel is CLEARLY above most, WHILE he works hard and is a master craftsman. Last thing, don't mistake "disappearing into a role" as being "better" than another actor. An actor is meant to take a character written on a script, and embody that character in THEIR way with THEIR emotions and translate that character to us, the audience. We want to be entertained and walk away saying, "My God he or she nailed the performance and was highly entertaining." Whether Heath Ledger "became" the joker and won the Oscar for Best Lead Actor, or Denzel playing a runaway slave who joined the army and won Best Supporting Actor, doesn't say, "Heath is better because he disappeared." Both won and both are GREAT. Most don't do that. But Denzel has done that MANY times and has been recognized more than most, both in nominations alone, and in wins.

Maybe thats enough for you to be convinced, if you haven't seen enough of the three actors movies yourself to understand? Denzel is one of the best "of the rest". But GOAT? Not a chance in hell, sorry, FOR ALL THE REASONS I already said. Theres a reason that DiCaprio failed miserably to emulate what DayLewis does. Theres a reason Johnny Depp befriended and spent so much time hanging out with Brando, trying to learn how to do what he did, AND FAILED MISERABLY. And theres been hundreds of amazing actresses over the decades, leading ladies, etc. NONE OF THEM even hold a candle to the talent of Streep. It's that simple. And yes - its SUBJECTIVE. You can like WHATEVER YOU LIKE. I even admire Denzel (one of my favourite actors ever btw seen EVERYTHING he's ever done) for being in love with the STAGE. BUT HE CANNOT EVEN HOPE to act as well as Day Lewis did in There Will Be Blood, or Gangs Of New York, or Lincoln. FACT! He cannot EVER DREAM of BECOMING SO MANY DIVERSE AND DIFFERENT AND BELIEVEABLE CHARACTERS that BRANDO DID in his short career! FACT! There are LEVELS! And the level that Denzel has reached is FAR BELOW what Brando did, what Day Lewis and Streep did. Simple. Anyone who argues that he did - Id say "Explain to me why! TELL ME of the movies and the roles, so I can see for myself!" But I've SEEN them all, and HE DIDN'T! Brando *became* Fletcher Christian, he *became* Don Corleone. he *became* Terry Molloy! Denzel is always Denzel - albeit an angry Denzel, or a cooler Denzel, or a happier or sadder Denzel. BUT DENZEL HE REMAINS! XD And academy awards and nominations and how many posters of himself he's sold or how much your mother fancies him .... DOESNT CHANGE THAT! Katy Perry has BILLIONS of views of her "music" on KZbin. Its very hard to pin down one specific actor who is overrated. Mostly I just find actors to either be too overexposed or badly miscast. Take Emilia Clarke for example. You don't buy her in tough action roles like Terminator: Genisys or Secret Invasion. She doesn't have the gravitas or the physique to make it believable. However if you cast her in romantic comedies or musicals I think she would work quite well because she comes across as very charming in interviews. If Hollywood actually still made romcoms and musicals at the level they did back in its golden age someone like her could've easily been one of the biggest stars. Its all about finding the right actors for the right parts in the right genres.

I judge actors based on three areas: physical and spatial performance, facial performance, and vocal performance. The ALL TIME greats can do all three simultaneously, but most actors are good in one area, maybe two. The “overrated” actors are probably “okay” actors, but just achieve social popularity and-or receive big roles for whatever reasons. But even the “underrated” actors are likely not that great either. Anyone can luck up and land that perfect role once or twice in their careers. We must also take into account how much influence a director has on an actor’s performance. If the director says do “This,” And actor ultimately must do so. And some directors just work better with actors. It is no surprise that four of Brando’s BEST performances come from Elia Kazan and Francis Ford Coppola.

Actors were powerful because of their charisma. Charisma relied on a certain amount of mystery. Social media killed that. She's held the public fascination for about 30 years now just from being a model.

@DeepFocuslens I enjoyed your explanation of Denzel Washington's acting, and it's very much on point, but I will say. I think you missed a good opportunity there to clarify to that poster that brought up Denzel, that there is a difference there between actors who very much take on the method acting/art of the chameleon and those of the persona acting that you spoke of. I think that was great, but it would have been a good learning lesson for that person to understand that not everyone has to be a chameleon actor to be a "good actor". As you said, it's Denzel's ability to convey emotion and subtilties that make him so good and convincing. He's similar in his roles yes, and many times it's his ability to bring forth with him this righteousness, strong delivery and execution of lines, and seriousness that distinguishes him in the field. Obviously the other side of acting has people like Daniel Day Lewis, Johnny Depp, and Gary Oldman who can quite frankly play anyone. These people have wowed us many times on screen and while it would be good for more actor's to achieve this, I do think it's another criteria of acting. Denzel has been one of my favorite actors growing up, maybe a little less so as I got older, but at the end of the day he's so great at what does. He's the type of actor that demands your attention and respect, regardless if you even like him. While not the chameleon actor, not many people can actually achieve that.

Forget overrated actors…IMO the most overrated acting trait is versatility. I really don’t care that much if an actor can put on a different accent or adopt the mannerisms of some historical figure. To me the most important trait of an actor is stage presence. Do I want to keep seeing them on screen or are they just a distraction that takes me out of the movie? Denzel has amazing stage presence, and I really don’t care that much if he hasn’t expanded his repertoire. He knows who he is and the archetypes that he can bring to life the best on screen.
@mmayer155810 күн бұрын
I think you pin point the difference between someone who is an actor versus someone who is a star - they don't have an expensive repertoire but they have become greater than the role because they know how to embody the role they play (the part was made for them essentially). I take issue that you discount versatility in an actor because that's a real defining mark. It separates the actor that challenges themself (to adopt new accents and mannerisms) from the actor who has become complacent with familiar roles (even if they can give incredibly strong performances in them). Accents and mannerisms are staples of an actor and are based on skills and ability as one has to work to adopt these things. Whereas 'stage presence' is very vague and might be based heavily on how an actor looks naturally, so they didn't really have to work hard or at all to evoke certain elements within their stage presence
@jgunner948 күн бұрын
If Actors are only using their stage presence and name, that’s usually distracting for a story. Actors transforming to a different person making you feel like they’re someone else is what you want with an actor.
@theimpossiblesomething67738 күн бұрын
I really appreciate that both these types of actors exist. There are actors with their own brand who will get you excited about their next project because you know exactly what you’re in for. And then there are other actors who are constantly expanding their range, leaving you guessing and curious to see what they do next, which is also very exciting. They both have their appeal in my opinion.

Denzel Washington is an excellent actor, but he's been going through the motions with most of his roles during the last couple of decades. He is a perfect example of someone with 'star' quality. The guy has charisma in abundance. He's in the league of a Burt Lancaster, Kirk Douglas, Sean Connery, other actors who more or less 'played themselves' but were stars with genuine gravitas. Barry Keoghan - I absolutely agree with the comments here and I don't think he's a bad actor, but I feel he's often miscast. In TKoaSD, I could not buy the crush that Kim had on Martin, not for a second. In Saltburn, I could not buy any of these characters falling in love with him. We're supposed to believe he's either physically attractive or exceptionally charming, but neither qualities are there; confident, yes, but confidence is not everything. His characters possess too many red flags for people to be drawn to him like they are in these movies. Zendaya - Agreed all around. The critique of Denzel, as well as Jack Nicholson similarly, is 2 dimensional. They have been oversimplified because they essentially are just playing themselves role to role. I do believe this has been called 1st person acting. When you cross apply the nuances and dynamics of your personality and emboldened them with rich range and depth of expression and contextualize that from role to role. If you only think 3rd person acting both non method and method (Heath in TDK and Daniel Day) is the only form of multiple dimensional acting, your perspective of acting is 2 dimensional. Don't get me wrong, transformation is dope and I'm a basic bro who thinks Heath as Joker is the best acting performance ever. But, don't get it twisted, 1st person acting with nuanced application of their own mannerisms, personality, and expressive range and depth can be compensative to the extent of being equal to the transformative roles.

Oh dear. Zendaya is very young. Denzel is very old. Actors at an early stage are learning their craft and roles are not a stretch. Actors at a later stage find their zone or lane and are too recognized to play certain roles. I think many people are disliking the actor, not their work. Very few actors can do a wide range. Casting directors contribute to this. There is a difference between actors who play the same roles and those who turn in bad performances. Otherwise, these polls simply expose the preferences of the commenters. If you don't like an actor, you won't give them a good review

I think you make a good point. This is visible in Denzel's case by looking at his variety of mid-career roles. But as you say, they can play those same roles to the continual delight of audiences, never turning in a bad performance. The actors who are genuine _actors_ who disappear completely into their characters (like Gary Oldman) are often "character" actors that seldom get the "leading man" and "leading lady" roles.

Watch Mickey Rourke's work in Angel Heart. Nobody goes there anymore and if they do and it has zero power. Timothy Chalamet is now considered one of our greatest talents........Timothy chalamet. Pretty boy with pretty unmessy emotions and a polished performance everytime.There are no more Mickey Rourkes.

Daniel day Lewis is a fantastic actor but the way people talk about him and his method, and especially how they compare him to other actors is pretentious.
@ActuallyAlask12 күн бұрын
@@kangaroo3708 I think he's the greatest actor of all time. But I understand where you're coming from. People mystify and glorify method acting and tend to unfairly put more stock into a performance if it's more physically transformative even if the emotion isn't there.

Daniel Day Lewis is an absolute legend. But people get confused and think that just because someone doesn't disappear into every role disqualifies them from being legends too. Denzel, Jack Nicholson, Tilda Swinton, Cate Blanchett, Anthony Hopkins, Meryl Streep...they're all pretty much themselves in every role. And they're all equally as legendary.

Completely agree about Zendaya. Granted, I've only seen her in Dune 2. I had the exact same thought as the post you showed. She is binary in her acting.
