My first bike was a Ninja 250. I rode it almost everyday for 2 years before I sold it and bought an R6. The Yamaha is fun, but I honestly wish I still had the Ninja because it was honestly the perfect commuter bike due to it’s weight, comfort, reliability, and rideability . I put it through absolute hell, but I still ended up selling it for a lot more than I bought it for.

I started on a Rebel 250. Guys who start on bigger bikes will make fun of you, but if you put in the seat time, you'll probably out ride a lot of them when you upgrade, possibly before. If you're just wanting to floss, go ahead and get whatever you want, but I'm not going to be as impressed as you might think by how much you spent or how fast your bike is if you can't ride worth a shit. You can draw a crowd of spectators on a little 250 practicing in a parking lot if you ride the shit out of it, and those skills translate quite naturally to bigger bikes. I gave up cruisers because I hate scrubbing pegs on pavement, but starting an a small cruiser was a great decision, and I have no regrets.

@michaellovell25186 жыл бұрын
@@notsteve1475 LOL, yeah, I get it. I'm 5'7" and around a buck and a half. The Rebel is too cramped even for me for more than an hour or so. I can totally understand why big guys wouldn't ride one, even to start on, but a 6' 200 lb. guy is going to find it easier to handle a bigger bike than us midgets. We have seat height issues that loom more heavily on our decisions, and bigger often equates to stronger, so the weight of a starter bike could be less of an issue for a bigger guy as well. I was really intimidated by big bikes at first, but after riding the 250 for a while, I put my fears aside and attended a HD demo event. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the weight was not an issue. HDs are low and I found them very easy to manage, but I was tired of grinding the pegs off cruisers. I rode to Daytona in October and started sitting on bikes. I really liked the FJR1300, but it felt really tall and top heavy to me. I didn't have any trouble riding it, but I had to hang off one side to firmly plant one foot. I was torn, but I wanted a little more than the Rebel had to offer, so I pulled the trigger when Kawi offered huge incentives on left over Ninja 650s. I rode it for a year, then revisited the FJR, and it feels completely different now. With the seat in the lower position, I feel really comfortable on it now.
@michaellovell25186 жыл бұрын
When I talk about "bigger bikes" in this context, It should certainly be understood to be a relative term. I think it's important to be able to flatfoot your first bike, and the bigger you are, the bigger bike you can flatfoot. I think lighter is probably better for anybody to learn on, but it's less important than being able to plant both feet firmly starting out. I don't think really powerful bikes are a good idea for beginners, but I also understand that a 300 lb. guy on a 250 would be like me riding a 5hp minibike. The size of the rider is definitely a relevant variable!

I love my ninja 250, was a great beginner bike and ill probably continue using it for the rest of this year or summer at the earliest. I agree with the rpm thing though, highways im sitting at 8-9k rpms. So it is running high, but you also gotta realize that bike can go up to 13k before hitting redline, they are designed based off running high rpms so it will be fine for awhile going those speeds, Id like to upgrade in the future when money isnt an issue but I dont plan on going past a 600cc. In 2011, I bought two new bikes for myself, as a beginner. The first, a 2003 Suzuki SV650S - a fun v-twin upright sportbike-style standard. I loved it, and still do. It wasn't the most comfortable or the fastest (of course), but it was seriously everything I needed or wanted. And yes, it had no problem meeting my needs as I grew as a rider. The second bike was a 2005 Suzuki Boulevard C50. That Boulevard was flat-out amazing. A full bagger, with a windscreen (yes, many people hate the windscreen, but whatever), a comfortable seat, floorboards, and a reliable design. Once again, I love that bike. Before I moved from SoCal to central Minnesota, I had to sell the bikes. I wish I never had. I miss them. Yeah, it's tougher to ride in Minnesota (and you can't ride for more than a few months), but I still miss the feeling of joy I had when it came time to drive to work or drive back home. I miss the ability to just take off for a few hours and center myself. Anyway, I totally "second" the mention of the SV650. It's an amazing bike for beginners, and quite good for experienced riders.

I've been riding an 08 ninja 250r that i found with 1.5k miles for $2.4k. I'm a short light weight dude (5'6" 135 lbs.) for about a couple of months in accumulated riding/ practice time. Obviously its definitely a fun bike for me. I have used my friends R6 and that thing is insane compared to mine but i like mine more. It is bias but i will say that its a more comfortable riding position and i feel that the r6 is too much to be on the streets (perfect for the freeways though). I will say that i've never been an adrenaline junkie and that i wanted to ride a motorcycle for sheer convenience of getting through traffic and having a backup vehicle. Power like that can get you in some unnecessary trouble but specially as a beginner with nerves and all and not having the throttle control or downshifting down. The 250 does leave me desiring for a bit more on the freeways but it gets the job done albeit like yam said at high rpms. It's not a problem for me since I dont ride that long on the freeway anyway though . Max 10 minutes to my destination. Still though I definitely believe everyone should own a small displacement bike they are just too much fun unless power and flexing your nuts is all you care about. Im only talking about sport bikes as those are the only ones i have ridden. This is not to say higher displacement bikes are a no go but as a sheer noob stand point you cant go wrong and you will want to keep your small cc bike if you can. Have i gotten the feeling of wanting more power? Yes. Would i trade my 250r for another higher power bike? No, i would like to have both lol.

I have a rebel 500 and I'm only 5'9" and I feel uncomfortable riding it. My ass sits on the edge of the seat because I think the bike really is for smaller people. It's a great bike, but for someone as tall as me, and is approaching 200 pounds you might want to steer clear and get something bigger.

I kinda had an "oof" moment when I saw the MT-07 on this list as that's the bike I have my eyes set on, but I recovered when I saw that the SV650 is what you recommend over it as that's my second favorite naked bike (aesthetically speaking of course). Didn't know they could be acquired for that low either.

The YZF600R - The best beginner sports bike for those with a bit of responsibility and not looking to upgrade within a year of buying. The bike has a 5.5 gallon tank, one of the most comfortable seats around, and plenty of power for street or track play. It will do small power wheelies (It's a 480lb bike, too), and can keep up canyon carving with most true sport bikes. I paid $3k for my 2004 that had 3,434 miles at the time of purchase (2015). It just ticked >20,000 on my ride home today. It's super easy to work on. I rebuilt the transmission @ 13k and it's run strong since. Super dependable; super comfy; plenty powerful; 45mpg P.S. Make sure you do the shift kit if you buy one of these bikes. Takes maybe 3 hours tops. Might save you a rebuild later on.

I am a owner of the Yamaha R3. The bike is perfect for all around commuting, tackling the twisties or long adventures. I've taken it 300+ miles on a single day and it shows no sign of failure. On the twisties of ACH (Highway 2) in CA , I've kept up with 600cc sport bikes because of the R3s nimble weight. And I use it simply to get to work because it does also get good gas mileage with a decent sized tank (3.7 gal). Although, I have gotten bored of its top speed (113 Mph), I don't plan on getting rid of it simply because it is super fun on the twisties. I believe that the R3 is great starter bike for these reasons.

Nobody in Murcia ever talks about scooters / mopeds. There are Scotter with 900cc! My opinion is a 125cc is the best way to start. And then if you get a big bike, using the scooter regularly, especially in winter will keep your riding skills sharp...ride the Scooter in snow and rain and ice, the slipping/crashing will train you to react correctly when you're on the big bike and rear tire slips...know what I mean

First bike I learned on: 1980 CB125s (a 125cc was very easy to learn on) First bike borrowed: 1995 Ninja250 (a 250cc is easy to learn, practice turns) First biked I owned: 2013 CRF250l (great beginner if you dual sports) Second owned: 2004 SV650 (great for a rider with at least a year of experience) Third owned: 2007 225xt (now sold as the 250xt, an excellent beginner if you like dual sports) Fourth: 2012 CBR250r (easy to learn, relearn, practice turns) Fifth: 2017 R3 (a 300cc class is an excellent choice for both learner or experienced) I've had my R3 for a little over a month now. It has the best suspension out of all I've owned or driven. It's very smooth, lightweight, and a bargain. I'd highly recommend for anybody who enjoys crusing around, likes great gas mileage, and for those who want to work on turning and braking before moving to a 600cc class. I would like to try out the Ninja 400. Perhaps one day, while not looking, I'll come across one. For now, I'm happy :)

Sorry to burst your bubble but the people that are in the market for a ninja 250 aren't just going to "pick up a 300" because it looks better. I 100% gaurantee you grew up with rich parents to even make a statement like that. In reality the 300 has a negligable output increase over the first gen when the fact that your paying 3-4 times as much. I liked your videos when you were "yamnienoob" not yammie I've had a bike for 2 years now think i know everything.
@The_Albino_Dino6 жыл бұрын
Paul Bubnash hahahahahhaha you don’t need rich parents to buy a 2k bike. Then ninja 300 is in no way an expensive bike, and if you think it’s unattainable unless you have rich parents, then maybe riding motorcycles is not for you. Also you should probably get a job.
@pauld.b71296 жыл бұрын
@@The_Albino_Dino you ain't finding a ninja 300 with a clean title for less the 3k bud. Idk what world you live in. A pre-gen ninja 250 is 800-1000 bucks easy. And is literally equally as capable as the 300. I just live in the real world where people work for their money and have bills to pay. Not living in mom and dad's house spending all my money on bikes. The difference between 1000 and 3000 is huge for 80% of people. People that work for their money know that. People who don't are easy to pick out. Btw had many more bikes that the dude who made this video and rode many thousands more miles I'm sure. Also I'm a motorcycle tech so keep talking 😂
@The_Albino_Dino6 жыл бұрын
Paul Bubnash you have not searched through your local craigslist hard enough if you have never found a barely used ninja 300 for less than 3k. Also if you make a decent amount of money the difference between 1-3k for a reliable form of transportation is not a big difference at all. Maybe being a motorcycle tech doesn’t really pay as well as other professions, but if you make an average salary affording a small cc motorcycle should really not be an issue. Hell even buying a brand new ninja 400 off the lot is still more economical than buying a car. In the end it comes down to personal choice, so if you prefer the 250 then go for it. However, if you are buying an old cheap motorcycle because you can’t afford a marginally more expensive updated version, then motorcycles might be out of your price range because the initial cost is just the beginning. You will need to be able to afford maintenance, gear, and insurance. So if you can’t afford a motorcycle that costs 3k you probably won’t have extra money to get those things either.
@The_Albino_Dino6 жыл бұрын
pieman12345678987654 it’s definitely a bargain if the 250 is what you want.
@pauld.b71296 жыл бұрын
@@The_Albino_Dino if your making 40-50k a year or less and paying your own bills, 2,000 dollars is not negligable. I'm starting to doubt you do either. Plus unless you live alot further south than me, a motorcycle is not year round transportation. I also don't put myself into debt like 90% if people seem willing to do. I pay cash only for everything i own. Paid cash for all my schooling, paid cash for all my bikes, cars and toys. I don't owe anything to anyone. I guess if you have the money go ahead and start on a 300, but the old ninjas are reliable as hell and dirt cheap, if you just want a commuter or starter bike to move on from, the 88-07 ninjas are the best bikes for it for the money. For most younger people who buy these bikes, you'll be alot better off than paying 3x as much for essentially the same bike. I've even done 2000 mile trips on the old ninjas so theres really no reason to pay more unless you're just unintelligent.
