Peter Obi’s statement about turning night vigils into night shifts seems narrow, especially given the more pressing issues facing Nigerians. While he points to religious gatherings, he overlooks how widespread nightlife culture-drinking, clubbing-has harmed productivity and public safety more severely. As a former governor, how many sustainable jobs did he create in Anambra, and what about the underpaid workers struggling daily in both private and government sectors? Thousands of Nigerians remain unemployed, searching for opportunities each day. Instead of real solutions, his recent podcast comment feels like an attempt to score easy points without addressing the real, pressing needs that Nigerian politicians, himself included, have consistently failed to meet.

It’s surprising how some people choose to criticize Christians attending night vigils, yet overlook the real issues plaguing society, like reckless nightlife activities and an ineffective government. While night vigils focus on prayer, reflection, and community upliftment, nightclubs often encourage excessive drinking and behavior with little constructive purpose. Wouldn’t it be more productive to direct our energies towards addressing the societal problems that actually harm our progress, rather than questioning those who seek peace and positive change through their faith?
