I love the wonderful sounds you’re getting! I’ve made several small friction mallets by hand-drilling Superballs halfway through and gluing them to short lengths of coat hanger wire, which are flexible enough to improve the effect. By far my favorite one, though, is a RickStix double-ended friction mallet, which has two larger balls on a short length of wire cable. The cable bends enough so you can use one or both of the balls at once, and the mallet works on gongs, cymbals, various drums (frame drums, djembes, congas), and even wooden tabletops! Rick Cormier, a drummer and former psychotherapist, sells them for about $22 on Etsy and elsewhere online. Good tools!
