💖 ABOUT ME:
Hi, my name is Jen I am 44 and live in Connecticut with my husband and 8 year old son. I am a stay-at-home Mom and full-time KZbinr with a degree in business with a focus in marketing. Before leaving work when my son was born, I was a commercial lender at a bank. I also worked at Sephora and Macy's doing visual merchandising.
I have dry skin with some hyperpigmentation and fine lines. I love natural makeup looks but occasionally go outside my comfort zone a little bit. On my channel you'll find lots of videos about drugstore makeup and drugstore dupes (those are my favorites to film!) but I also review high-end makeup as well. I hope you enjoy my channel and if you do, please don't forget to SUBSCRIBE & leave me a comment!

I have aged the most in the last 4 years. I have suffered 5 miscarriages. This was in the covid era. Then, 3 IVF failed cycles, my dad's brain hemorrhage n paralysis and his death. My brother's divorce and my mom's cancer diagnosis. I was the one who never cared for her akin nor even wear a sunscreen but my face glowed. But in these 4 years, I developed hyperpigmentation, sunspots, wrinkles. Dullness, pimples and what not! One fine day, i started watching skincare videos and they inspired me to adopt a skincare routine to start over and help me gain confidence. Ive started using sunscreen Cerave tinted 30spf since June 2023 and I can see a teeny tiny bit difference in my skintone. All my money went into IVF, but now im saving to purchase some good quality products which are affordable 👌 and Your videos inspire so much ❤🎉😊

OMG PROFOUND! Jen….you are spot on. My great grandmother actually had medical students photograph her skin at 97 because of how good it looked. Genes really do play a role. At 49, I’m trying to accept my forehead lines. I lost my Dad at 66 2 years ago, so I try to practice aging with gratitude, because so many people don’t get the chance.🥺

Agreed. I look younger than my age, and some of that is daily sunscreen use starting in my mid 20s. And some of it is genetic. My mom also looked younger than her age; she was sometimes mistaken for my older sister (21 year age difference.) She wasn't a consistent sunscreen user, but she had an office job and wasn't much of an outdoors person.

Absolutely...I was 21 and married and answered my front door one day.. the person said "hello dear, is your mother home?"..... I was not impressed and said, "yes, but at her own home!!"😂😂 it took to about 38 before people started to stop checking my ID!! Now I'm 63 and people guess I'm in my 50s, so getting closer, my skins still very good, got to thank my grandfathers Swedish skin... smooth and beautiful until the day he died. 😍

But if you look at people living in rest home, but you will notice they all look and are actually old. Genetics play a role and maybe some age slower than others, but all reach the same destiny. No one really look that great at 80-90s. Nonetheless, she looks at least 15 years younger than her actual age.

20 to 30 percent of skin aging is caused by genetic factors. The remaining 70 to 80 percent are caused by environmental influences, for example, UV radiation and air pollution. :)

Some Influencers won’t mention genetics because they won’t sell products. Their prime goal is to sell. They will never say that the product they’re pushing may not work on you. That’s why women have a drawer full of products that they purchased and tried but didn’t work on them. I appreciate your honesty. These are my thoughts and opinions.

At almost 70, you taught me something in this video. I never use a toner and never have but pressing a moisturizing type toner into the face multiple times?! I tried it last night. The results were amazing! My face was so soft this morning. Thank you. Teaching an old dog new tricks. You just never know who you will reach, when and what they might learn. Thank you.

I love how you take the time to say that not all skin care works the same for everyone. I feel like a lot of influencers just talk about a product just to sell it. I also love how you don't use an eye cream! Most people think you need one but all you need is a good moisturizer. Great video!

This is my first time watching you. I am so very grateful for your honesty and for not having had any procedures done. I truly feel like the only woman on the planet who isn't getting anything done. Jen, this is the most well-done skincare video I have ever watched. I greatly appreciate you giving important disclaimers, like the role genetics plays in how our skin looks and ages, and that certain skincare works well for you but might not for others. I have been experiencing some dry skin during the day, so this morning I tried the “7 layers” technique you mentioned. I was SHOCKED at the immediate difference it made in my skin’s hydration. My skin even looked more plumped and smoothed! Thank you for educating about such a simple yet effective technique I could do with products I already had! Finally, thank you for giving such great recommendations and alternatives, plus explaining so well what each product does. I have been looking for a good vitamin C serum, and I plan to buy that Blissy one today! I’m so thankful for you and all the work you put into your content!

Honestly, you look like you're in your late 20s! Your skin is beautiful! I am 72, and my skin is good with few wrinkles. I have ultra dry skin! I have been using Kirk's Castile soap on my face every day for decades. It is an exfoliant, so wash gently. I use Eucerin Advanced Repair as my primary skin care. I made my own primer lotion, which nourishes, protects and prepares the skin....Castor oil, coconut oil, zinc oxide, and a few other ingredients. Women should experiment with mixing and tweaking products. I always enjoy your videos. Thank you. Blessings!

Jen, as a 71 years young woman, I just want to thank you for your upfront honest “disclaimer”. I love your channel and thank you for all of the research and testing you do to bring us wonderful and affordable choices in makeup and skin care. I am very diligent in my skincare, but not at all extravagant. Companies often must think we are a bit daft if we are to believe a surface cream will banish our wrinkles! With that said, I do want to take care of my skin, play with makeup and feel and look the best I can as I am blessed to continue celebrating birthdays. Genetics is a biggie. I remember as a teen complaining to my mom about my roundish full face. Her reply was that one day I would be grateful and she was so right. Have a fabulous day and I LOVE your content🥰🥰

Hi Bobbie! I completely agree...skincare can temporarily plump up the skin and make our wrinkles look less noticeable but it's not going to drastically turn back the clock. Absolutely right. Topical products won't get rid of deep wrinkles. Some actives can help with the appearance of them, and may be able to get rid of fine lines. And moisturizer can help. But it generally takes procedures - laser surgery or cosmetic surgery to get rid of wrinkles. Really, the only thing we can do is prevent wrinkles by wearing sunscreen and avoiding the sun.

I'm turning 45 soon and I appreciate you making this video very much. My skin has changed so much in the last few years. I had combination skin with oily t-zone for my entire adult life until I hit my 40s. Now my skin gets super dry and I have had to completely change my skin routine. I do use retinal -- not retinol, I love Geek and Gorgeous's A Game 5. It's never caused irritation for me, but I only use it 2-3 times a week.

Hi Jen genetics and lifestyle really are major factors in the health and look of our skin. At 51 I'm not all that wrinkly, but a lifetime of avoiding the sun for my fitzpatrick one skin is probably part of the reason. I was wearing spf most days in the Summer long before we knew what we know now and sun avoidance behaviours were always a thing for me. I DO NOT TAN and being burnt is no fun, so I tried not to get burnt. I would go abroad on holiday/vacation and people would ask when I came back "did you go?", as I was the same colour I was before I went. However I have had lifelong eczema and developed rosacea during perimenopause (I have been fully menopausal now for a few years) - this has led to a lot of extreme dryness and inflammation (both of which contribute to aging more than is discussed). Layers of very gentle, hydrating and moisturising skincare is how I keep my skin calm/comfortable. I can't tolerate vitamin C (even the derivatives are very problematic on my skin) and retinoids are something I use in a very low dose. My main active is azelaic acid and it has been a game changer for the tone and texture of my skin - it has improved a lot since using AA the last few years. Outwith that I really like the Kate Somerville Delikate range, some of the Paula's choice products and some Korean beauty - gentle moisturising products my skin likes. I use Ultrasun as my spf (it's a hybrid long wear EU spf) every day I leave the house. I try to give my skin a break from all the spf if I'm staying at home and it's raining/overcast, as I'm not sitting directly in front of a window. My skin can struggle with spfs and many are very drying/irritating. Even my favourite ultrasun is a tiny bit drying, but it's excellent protection and a product I've used for over a decade. My skin is sensitive to the drying effects of zinc and some chemical filters are a complete no go for my rosacea. Best wishes.

Really appreciated this video ! I know that genetics plays a big part in how my skin looks. My mother is 88 with great skin and always used a moisturizer. She never went to bed without washing her face either. I have more sensitive skin and have been using good skin care since my twenties ! I've been looking for a mild toner that isn't too drying and will see how that 7 layering method works.

I'm so glad you mentioned your toner. All through my 30s and 40s my skin on each side of my nose, between my eyebrows, and my chin was always red and peeling. I didn't use any kind of retinal, vitamin C or any exfoliants, and I moisturized like crazy. I couldn't use 99% of foundations because they immediately burned and so just wore Laura Mercier tinted moisturizer but after a couple of hours the red was evident, and it was something I thought I had to live with. At the end of my 40s I discovered K-beauty skin care, especially essences and toners, and that's has been such a game changer. Now my skin has zero redness, zero peeling, and is just normally dry for someone 63 years old. I feel that learning how to use an essence and/or a toner has made all the difference to prepare my skin to receive a moisturizer and stay soft and hydrated without the skin barrier being compromised.

Yay, my favorite creator, youtuber, and / or influencers . I am a couple of months younger than you. I will be 45 in October! I use a hydrating mist, a toner, and an essence. I also use adapalene. It helps with my hormonal acne. I also use clinique even better dark spot corrector. After every pimple, I get hyperpigmentation. I also use kojic acid. The milani Aqua Bloom water cream is really good.

Jen!!! THANK YOU for sharing your layering technique. I've been patting in 3 layers of my (economical good molecules) toner and instead of using 2 pumps at once of my serum, I have been patting in 1 pump, then waiting and doing another pump. IT HAS MADE A HUGE DIFFERENCE in just a few days. I'm able to use LESS moisturizer because my skin is so plump and hydrated before getting to moisturizer step! Following your technique is SAVING my precious skincare products and making my skin look amazing! I'm 35 and as much as I love makeup, skincare is where my self care priorities [and money] are these days. I've been a (passive...so sorry) subscriber for a few years now. We have a similar complexion and a spot on skin type, as I've needed heavy moisturizer since I was a teen for my dry skin. I typically am drawn into your makeup videos because I trust your very thorough reviews if I'm already interested in a particular product, and it helps to see how it performs on...not 20 something skin. You seriously have the BEST makeup reviews, it's just that I'm not as heavily into makeup as I once was. I see this video is already doing quite well, I wish you all the KZbin success, congrats and THANK YOU!!! You are a fantastic creator and you deserve it!!! 💕☺

I’m 41 and just discovering what my skin type is/ how to look after it. Thanks for sharing this and acknowledging genetics too! Am realising my skin is prone to dryness and is mostly dehydrated. I have naturally leant towards doing something like you - non astrigent toner in the day (lush’s eau Roma water is great) and l’occitanes immortelle reset tri phase essence at night. I also really believe in the 7 skins method - I looked 5 years younger after doing it one night - I just always forget to do it - I need to keep it up! Thanks for sharing Jen. Hope these recommendations from the uk are helpful! Xxx

Thank you for telling us it's ok to not use retinol! My skin doesn't like exfoliation much at all so it's very refreshing to hear that not everyone can tolerate it, and that it's ok. 👍🏼💕🌹

@20thcenturyrelic that's strange 🤔 because I also have Rosacea and I use Prescription Tretinoin Cream from my Dermatologist and you wouldn't be able to tell I had Rosacea at ALL since I started using it a few Year's ago it's magic for MY Skin anyway and my Rosacea was VERY Bad! I also get a Laser treatment once a Year from my Dermatologist as well.

@@JenPhelps it was good to hear you say that. I've often wondered if our skin naturally sheds why are we rushing the process? I never had a reaction to retinol but at the same time, can't say I've ever seen a benefit either. And your skin looks always fabulous.

I finally understand now why EVERYTIME I would use Retinol, I would breakout & get cystic acne.. I have very dry skin & pretty clear skin... But now I steer clear from Retinol because it causes me to breakout! Thanks again, Jen, for the info. 💕 - Lori

Thanks for mentioning genetics. I am also 45. Lately (not sure why) but I've started to look older but even 3 years ago (COVID was stressful in various ways, could be why), I was told that I look younger than someone a decade younger. I had a dermatologist as a young girl b/c I always had rashes. She told me to NEVER wash my face in the morning. We're so obsessed with "cleaning" that we actually strip off oils, which protect our skin. I'm glad you mentioned that we don't need to wash our face. The body has some amazing abilities if we only trust it. Also, the Hamish toner is currently unavailable :-( I was going to get it. However, I've always liked toner, even before it was so popular and I must say I am really impressed with the new ELF toner. I iiked their old one fine and it was a bigger bottle, but the new one is so dewy, I just love it. Thanks for mentioning the 7 layers. I can totally see how it protects the barrier.

‘Snail’ mucin is not the holy grail of moisterizers, I don’t know why everyone is crazy about it. A moisturizer will only stay in your skin for a short period of time. No matter what it is.

You are so right about sunscreen and I too was a sunbunny. I got melanoma cancer 2016 on leg. Surgey resolved it and I got it caught early. My family does have history of skin cancer. Retinol dries my skin alot and it doesn't really improve. I also had red light treatments and it did not help. I try and eat plenty of fruit/veggies, lots of water and get plenty of sleep and exercise. Great information Jen.

@@reeseb8520 I have a sensitivity to Niacinamide, so I have to find ones without that ingredient. I use Mediheal N.M.F Intensive Hydrating Toner. I really think that layering skincare as Jen described is key. I’m guessing any K-beauty toner with high reviews (with ingredients that work for your needs), will make a difference if you add it to your routine.

Tbh, I very seldom watch skin care videos. Now, having admitted that.. Jen, you are truly the ONLY creator whose skin care videos I've always watched, even if only passively, like while doing chores or something. No matter the subject, I know for a fact that you will never say something you don't actually believe, or push a product that you don't actually like. I genuinely wish more creators would follow your example. Sure, it could totally be possible that running your channel in a non-inflamatory way without pushing the latest, greatest hugely hyped EXPENSIVE product with a ton of affiliate links could lead to a slower growth rate. However, you know what you also get when you choose to go that way? FIERCELY loyal and dependable subscribers that will choose to tune in time and time again without hesitation :) Hope you're having the best week Jen, and that you have an even better weekend! 😊

Also, I just wanted to say that I love how you always post before & after pics when you have a great experience with a product, whether it be skincare or makeup. Very few creators do this, like seriously... now that I'm thinking about it, I can't think of one other creator that I've seen do it as often and consistently as you. I know how cruel some people can be (and have been, unfortunately 😒) with their comments, and yet, you do it anyway. (My insecure ass could never! 😂) Not only does it speak to your dedication to create quality and thorough content, your honesty and authenticity, but also to your strength of character.. at least, that's how I interpret it. Ok, enough gushing! ☺️ lmao Just wanted to add on after seeing the pics of your jawline. Thank you for listening. This has been: "Excessively Compliment Your Favorite Content Creator, by me. Featuring my top pick of the past 4yrs, the incomparable Jen Phelps (formerly known as Beauddiction 😉)!!!" 😂😂😂 Ps.. Please don't mind the silliness, I've only had 3 hrs of sleep in the past 48.
