John Crist documents what life is like with an emotional support pet. Different from a service animal, which is an animal specifically trained to help people with disabilities, an emotional support pet is just a loop hole in the system that people take advantage of, its perfect!!

I have a family member who had an emotional pet mouse in her college dorm. She actually got it for legitimate and clinical health concerns, approved by a real therapist, and never took advantage of it. It literally just stayed in her room for her to hold after classes. I hate how there's so many people who abuse the system that the people who actually need them are now in the minority.

DED! 🤣 Every time I go out in public with my guide dog it’s this weird thing where my dog doing her job exposes which dogs are actual Service Dogs and which pet owners are responsible. Often dogs in vests bark, growl, whine, and/or lunge at my dog, and my dog just guides me around them without a peep. The worst is when other dogs in vests go right up to my dog’s face and the person just acts like the dog is being good and saying hello. I just have my dog sit and feed her kibble (keeping her attention on me) while I ask said person to call their dog back: mine is working.

😂 Someone finally said it. I have a service dog (an actual, trained service dog) and people with Emotional Support Animals are the absolute worst for us. People don’t even need them, have them anyway and then refuse to stop bringing them into non pet friendly places, even though ESAs don’t have public access rights. Then we have all sorts of distractions for my service dog to try to work around, plus the aggressive dogs which make it dangerous for us just to go out and shop and mind our own business. *just want to edit to add that I am speaking only about those who do not need their ESAs, those who get scam “certificates” or “letters” online or who take their ESAs into non pet friendly places. I by no means meant to say that ALL ESAs are bad and I 100% support those who get a letter from their doctor/therapist and only use the animal in their own home/on flights. And the laws do vary by location. I just meant people abusing the system as a whole has caused me a lot of issues. I myself had an ESA before I got my service dog and he was a great help to my mental health. :)
@tigger6186
@tigger6186 3 жыл бұрын
An esa is just an over used crutch to continue to shove your emotional issues down further and not deal with them. I think that anyone who says they need an esa should be in mandatory cognitive behavioral therapy. Then we wouldn't have to deal with the crazy untrained pets that get put in very dangerous situations.
@akbflo
@akbflo 3 жыл бұрын
I was in a super-crowded mall once and this lady had a clearly untrained pit bull with an emotional support animal jacket (I don’t know what else to call it) but like a regular collar and leash, and I’m like “Lady, that little jacket isn’t going to save you when your pit bull bites somebody’s baby in their stroller.”
@simplyivyvine2617
@simplyivyvine2617 3 жыл бұрын
@@tigger6186 That’s not really true. People who actually have emotional problems, who get a letter from their therapist/doctor and follow the laws are not the problem. Animals have been scientifically proven to help those with mental illnesses and they shouldn’t be bashed just because their animal is labeled as an ESA. Their animals don’t require training because they aren’t allowed into non pet friendly places. Just in housing, on flights and occasionally in schools. It’s the people who don’t need their animals, who get a fake scam letter online and take their pets into non pet friendly places that are the problem. They’re the ones to be upset with. But ESAs in and of themselves are definitely not a crutch to ignore your mental issues. ESAs can be a very valid part of someone’s treatment plan, when they’re needed. I had an ESA before I got my service dog. That little cat helped me out a lot. It’s definitely a case by case basis when it comes to ESAs

Why so much hate on ESAs? I'm considering getting a rabbit for emotional support, because I don't have health insurance and can't afford therapy. Of course I won't bring it to restaurants or planes, but I probably would take it to the grocery store. I don't see anything wrong with that.
@simplyivyvine2617
@simplyivyvine2617 3 жыл бұрын
@@mongoose9851 ESAs aren’t in and of themselves a bad thing. It’s uneducated owners that cause problems. Emotional support animals are allowed in housing and on flights. They do not have public access rights, meaning they are not allowed in non pet friendly places (grocery stores, restaurants, movie theatres, etc) Service animals are the ones with public access. Owners who insist on bringing their ESAs into non pet friendly places are a danger to my life. My service dog getting distracted could kill me. (If he misses a medical alert for instance) and a lot of the time pets out in public aren’t trained for the area which puts my dog in danger as well, since stressed or untrained animals can be aggressive and try to attack my dog.

Both of my ESPs have passed away. They helped keep me stable and when I wasn’t stable, they comforted me. Having an ESP is a real thing, and not something to be abused. ESA are such an abused support. As someone who has a legitimate esa and knows their rights(not bringing my dog into restaurants or places that only allow service dogs, making sure my dog is well behaved in public, and obtaining my esa letter through a real life therapist) it can be super frustrating to see people who just buy it online and take advantage of the system. If the dog is not wearing a vest or is misbehaving, you can ask the handler if it is a service dog and what service it's trained to provide. I prematurely judged emotional support animals, with the exception of those of men and women who've served and experienced things universally known was horrific. I went through a trauma, had no support from man, actually was being blamed for my part in what happened to me, and was doing it all alone, with Jesus and a trauma therapist, the only kind hearts I could find to listen to me, and one day I was in line at a store and a dog walked up to me without me noticing and leaned against me. It stayed with me for 15 minutes while I waited in line. The owner told me all about how the dog was trained and where he's brought, children's hospitals, etc. Everytime I went to pull away not because I didn't need the support but because I was thinking about how I didn't want to waste the owner's time or how I didn't want to take the dog away from someone who really needed it, normally real reasons, this time excuses, the dog laid down even further and got even more comfortable. The dog could obviously sense that I needed it. I had been so fragile before that point, and this was the only sign of comfort that I had gotten from anyone in however long, that I broke into tears in the parking lot after I left the store and was fighting tears when I was in line. The owner had said that he was surprised how the dog had gone directly to me as though he'd known me. I knew when the dog walked up to me that, like a familiar face appearing with prayer or an encouraging word, a song that triggers a memory, a comped drink when you really can't afford it, a message you overhear that's exactly what you need to go forward or heal a place in your heart you didn't know needed healing or didn't want to acknowledge, God was reminding me to worry not and that He will never leave nor forsake me. I became so on board with emotional support dogs that I asked my therapist about it hoping she would get me one but thankfully, as God is faithful, months after the event I'm healed, stronger than before, and fully learning on the Lord again. One thing that made me separate from people in my life is something my trauma therapist said, "Don't let people bully you into healing faster than your ready." Don't let people bully you not matter who they are. I'm not speaking about Jon lol separate from toxic people. If you're just getting by and can't find anyone besides Jesus to hear you, or everyone at church tells you to keep your eyes fixed on that which is above because they don't want to hear about your pain or know how they can help, look into free counseling resources. There's no shame nor condemnation. No shame nor condemnation. And emotional support animals are legit. Just be glad you don't need one. God bless you and keep you. ❤

The problem with people thinking that society is broken is that people think that society can be fixed. 🌎 The *truth* is that society is dead, and needs to be *redeemed* . Good politics is good. But... What we ultimately need is a new heart. 💔❤️ Jesus - Is the Way, the Truth, the Life 😊🙏 ✝️ That said, do what we can to fight the evil while we are here...

So true. I work in a grocery store and policy says we are only allowed to have trained service dogs come in because it's usually unsanitary. People bring in their pets now and we are told not to confront them in case of issues. But one day a customer comes over and asks if she can borrow paper towels. I ask what's wrong and she said she is cleaning up a mess. HER NON SERVICE DOG PEED in the grocery store where people have their food. That's why we only should have service dogs, because they are trained.

The only reason I’d get an ESA is because obsessively petting it is more socially acceptable than an grown man holding an stuffed animal

So true. Reminds of the several college students I know who've decided they want pets in their dorms and have openly told friends that they're going to use the emotional support thing as their excuse. Sure, it's true for some people. I've known some of the real ones, but it's definitely abused a lot, too.

0:33 you say "emotional support horse" but the article says it's a service horse. As you allude to later on, there's a huge difference. Also fun fact, there are only two types of animals that can be service animals per the ADA - dogs and miniature horses. So as long as that horse meets the other requirements it's legit!
