Yeah, there's a bit of investment needed if you're a first timer. But once you have the basics, camping gets real cheap. The only problem is finding nice places to camp that aren't swamped by other people. It forces one to get out to the wilderness areas and less travelled spots. Although I had been camping hundreds of times, I had never been back packing. The only purchase I made for my first back packing trip was two backpacks. One for me, and one for my wife. On our first backpacking trip, my pack weighed right at 75 lbs. and my wife's was right at 45 lbs. From that excursion, we learned a lot. Our next backpacking trip, my pack weighed in at 40 lbs. and her's was 25 lbs. We have taken numerous more backpacking and motorcycle camping trips since then and never failed to have what we needed. The most expensive purchases turned out to be a good backpacking tent, backpacking sleeping bags (actually called "biker bags"), and take down fishing poles. Thank you Cabelas, Bass Pro, and Amazon.
