Falco, Opus, EAV, Andy Borg, R. Fendrich are from Austria and Falco is the only german speaking artist with a #1 hit (Amadeus) in America till now!

As far as I know NENA had a #2 in USA with "99 Luftballons". Remarkable on that is, it was not done by the englisch version but with German lyrics.

Keep in mind that those are not all german songs, but songs from countries that speak german as main language. That means Austria, Germany, Switzerland, etc. Falco, Rainhard Fendrich, Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung, DJ Ötzi for example are from Austria, DJ Bobo is from Switzerland

I'm not German, but I knew about six of those. There were some bangers that came out of Germany. "Da Da Da" by Trio, "Der Kommissar" by Falco, and 99 Luftballoons by Nena were all big hits in the USA. I was a college freshman in 1981 so those hits were big at the beginning of MTV. The others I knew just because I have eclectic tastes. This was a very cool video to react to. All three of those hits I mentioned are worth a deeper dive reaction.

Awwww... I just felt young again. The 80s where my teens and early twens. I miss that decade. Not everything was great back then but looking back we all seemed so innocent and life felt easier (not sure it really was but the genreal vibes were so different). And after the "fall" of the wall everything seemed possible for a while. Also: My ability to remember song lyrics from the 80s far exceeds my ability to remember why I walked into the kitchen 😂

I am German and I know them all except three of them. 😅 If you listen carefully you can hear that Bring Me Edelweiss is a cover of ABBA's SOS, at least the chorus. A lot of the songs in this list are 'German Schlager' or 'Neue Deutsche Welle' but there is also Euro Pop or Disco Pop. But some of the artists and bands in this video (Falco, Rainhard Fendrich, Erste Allgemeine Verunsicherung) are from Austria, not from Germany. And by the way, Nicole, who gives you Karen Carpenter vibes, won the ESC in 1982 with that song (Ein bisschen Frieden).

You forgot to mention that some songs with originally German lyrics were then translated to make the English version. For example, "99 red balloons" by Nena and "Major Tom" by Peter Schelling.

Yes, or also the other way around. Some songs have originally English lyrics though the singer was German. For example 'Jenseits von Eden' from Nino de Angelo was first recorded in English. The song is called 'Guardian Angel' and the singer was Drafi Deutscher under the alias 'Masquerade'.

And very early on, in the 50s, 60s and 70s, songs that were hits abroad were re-recorded with German lyrics by German performers (very rarely also by the original singers such as Cliff Richard or Roger Whittaker). This resulted in some great versions - but also some terribly awful ones. I'm thinking of Whittaker's "Du warst mein schönster Traum" ("Last farewell") as a very good example and "Der Hund von Baskerville" ("Paranoid") by Cindy and Bert as the worst. And you have to give Roger Whittaker credit for the fact that he didn't understand a word of what he was singing. 🤣 The fact that he subsequently recorded all his songs in German made him very well-known and popular here. I'm not a big fan of this kind of music but my mother and grandmothers were big Fans.

Milli Vanilli was the 2nd Project from Frank Farian after Boney M (which got a bad press later, after is was revealed that the main "singer" from Milli Vanilli song only playback and never made that fact public)

This was interesting. I did hear about 4-5 songs whose music was familiar to me. I bet when music from other countries become hits in the U.S., the artists and producers are thrilled, as Americans are such big consumers !!! 😊

The same discussion over and over again when a video like this appears here. It's about German musicians, musicians who come from German-speaking countries - Falco, EAV (Austria) and DJ Bobo (Switzerland). Or German/Austrian/Swiss people who sang in English. In addition, as well as German productions such as Milli Vanilli & Boney M - Frank Farian German producer... No, there are no international titles to be seen there because international artists have been removed from this “short top 5”. Also no Scorpions because they didn't have a top 5 placement in the period to make the list.

99 luftballons by Nena (1983) is one of my all time favorite... very great vibes, you should listen to it (in th german version, the english version is crap...) Alphaville (Big in Japan / Sounds like a melody) and Sandra (Maria Magdalena / In the heat of the night) were very big everywhere in Europe in the middle of the 80s... Modern Talking (You're my heart, you're my soul / Brother Louie, ...) too.

Germany's popular music has always been more pop than rock, with a few exceptions. In the early to mid-80s, there was a lot of experimentation, but later most of it was back to the same old thing, shallow pop songs without much to say and with interchangeable lyrics. 🤷🏼‍♀️ "Wind of change" didn't come out until 1991, and "Rock you like a hurricane" "Still loving you" were generally popular, but apparently not enough.

“German songs” = Their singers must be German speakers or their production must have taken place in a German-speaking country. Both at the same time are not necessary. They also don’t have to be sung in German.

One of the 'singers' of Milli Vanilli (Rob Pilatus) was a German, the other one (Fab Morvan) is born in France. The founder of the band (Frank Farian) was one of the most successful German music producers (he also founded Boney M.).

@@Lisa-M Rob and Fab were lip-syncing on the Milli Villi songs. It was a big scandal in 1990 and they had to give their Grammy award for best new artist back after Frank Farian admitted that the duo was only dancing. This has been made into two movies: The German movie "Girl you know it's true" from 2022 and the American movie "Milli Vanilli" from 2023.

That Germans have no sense of humor is the silliest old "joke". An invention of the British probably (the joke). It's just very dry and black. We have more (political and social) satire than most countries. Like the British John Oliver in the USA.

I agree with you about the taste in music, but not about the humor. We have some, some people just don't understand it. 🤷🏼‍♀️ But google to see if there are any bands in your musical taste. There are tons of bands of all musical genres, some of which fill entire arenas and yet don't appeal to the taste of the masses. Funnily enough, bands outside the mass taste are sometimes more popular abroad than in Germany.
