In South Africa you would still call the boy by the father's name. For example if the father's name is Victor and he has a son also called Victor, they would be called Victor Senior and Victor Junior. But they would call him Junior for short. If he then goes on to have a son called Victor, then he would be known as Victor Senior and his son would be Victor Junior.

Last year Maria is at 49 and José is at 94, for the past 20 years both names aren’t on the top 5 or even the top 10, I agree that they are very traditional names here (my grandfather’s name is José and my grandmother’s is Josephina) but they are nothing but tradition nowadays, last years top five were: Alice; Sophia; Helena; Valentina and Laura; and Miguel; Arthur; Bernardo; Heitor; and David

I didn't know Sofia was so popular around the world as it is here in Brazil. Funny fact: José, João, Maria and Ana are like neutral names here. Like, my name is Ana Letícia (it could've been Maria Leticia but my mum likes Ana best) and nobody calls me Ana even tho is my first name. Of course you can use those names by themselves but it's very commom that they are follow by another. Oh and we love italian names here, I was almost a Giovanna (italian for Joan) and nowdays pretty much every baby is born are named Enzo or Valentina haha Another great one, sj. I've come across a few Russian names recently and found I quite like them. Also another interesting one if you could do it would be foreign versions of common names (like for example the Yiddish version of Sarah being Tzeitel) - might be good for people who want to use a family name but in a different way?

Hi SJ. Thank you for great content as always. I love your channel so much!! I´m swedish and I actually have a real big language-complex because i truly think all words and names sounds so much more beautiful in english than it does in swedish. Here in Sweden we have these hard vocal-sounds, for example the letters O, U and Y (and also sometimes the letters Å, Ä, Ö) is so much more harsh and more "stubby" sounding in comparison to the more rounder vocal sound you guys have in english!! Even though both me and my husband are Swedish we actually gave our children names that are really similar in both english and swedish. Julian and Ellie :-). But I have a sister who has two boys with two really swedish names: Valter and Sixten.

I'm from Belgium. We have two main regions; Flanders where they speak Flemish, a Dutch dialect and Wallonia where they speak French. Then there's Brussels where it's mixed but mostly French and there are way more people with international backgrounds there. So the name trends vary due to the language but we do adopt names from the other regions. In Flanders which is where I come from, the most popular names in 2018 were: 1. Olivia 2. Mila 3. Marie 4. Ella 5. Emma 1. Arthur 2. Noah 3. Lucas 4. Leon 5. Liam I couldn't really find an official source for the other regions. I'm not a mum so I don't really know how to search for it but I know Arabic names like Abdellah, Mohammed, Fatima, Sarah are very popullar and in Wallonia you'll find names like Océanne, Chloé, Léa, Camille, Louis, Hugo, Jules, Théo and so on. My name is actually Katoo. Around English speakers, I just use Kate because English speakers really mess up the pronounciation. It's derived from Katarina, just like Katya, Katherine, Kat, Katryn, Kathy, Ekatarina and so on. The usual spelling of my name is Cato but my parents liked it better spelled like Katoo because it's more unique. It's pronounced "Kat-oh".

It will be interesting to see what these bubs get called, because I say that, but it's definitely the girls/ladies I know, who are all at least 2010 (most of them already fully grown adults, but my younger sister had some Charlotte/Charli's in her classes) that are getting shortened that way. Maybe with a rise in popularity, we'll have a multitude of Charlotte nicknames come forth! How exciting!

Lovely list, SJ. In South Africa, the names Junior and Precious have actually moved onto the most popular list for middle names, while many African parents are choosing traditional names for first names. www.google.co.za/amp/s/www.thesouthafrican.com/most-popular-baby-names-south-africa-2018/amp/ Here in Cape Town, most name choices are influenced by British or American trends so more “English” names are heard. Names carry such importance here, especially for the older generations, as many of them were re-named with British names during the Apartheid. As a well known example, our late former president was not named Nelson until he went to school, where he was assigned the name.

I love the South Africa girls name precious I think it’s adorable, I also am so shocked at how gorgeous the Japanese baby names are hiroshi is amazing I love the sound of it, my favourite names of all time are Odette, Rosalie, Lydia and Clara-Joy I love Clara-Joy because my name is Esme-Joy and it sounds quite silly to name a child after myself but I have always loved Joy so much and would not have a problem using it :)

Esmé Joy here in South Africa, many babies are named for values, often in an African language (we have 11 official languages), such as Patience, Innocence, Knowledge etc. On the other hand, many baby names are inspired by British and American trends

In spanish Hugo's H is silent, so it would be pronounced Ugo (u like oo in "look" and o like "pop") Hugo. My granny's name is Lucia and she hated it because back then it sounded very old fashioned (it was her own grandma's name). Now my cousin named her daughter Emma Lucia. My grandpa's and dad's names are Miguel and my mum's Gloria :)

Dear SJ, Really hope you feel better soon, least you shouldn't get poorly for Christmas now! Hope the rest of the family are well. Loved this video and all the names, thank you, they all sound so soft and romantic. You look amazing , and so pretty- that top and those colours suit you so well. I know other people have asked but please could you do an update on your weight loss journey and how to maintain and not allow those pounds to creep back on- that's the most difficult part I find! Also wondered if you would be willing to share a speech therapy update. My daughter who started Reception this past September has had 3 speech therapy sessions ( and that's her lot now) but I'm concerned all the other girls are pairing up and she's finding it hard to make friends. I'm a parent helper in her class one morning a week and some of the other little girls ask me why Calista doesn't talk the same as they do and it breaks my heart. I feel so anxious. So sorry to off load/over share/ramble on. She mainly has trouble with pronouncing certain letters within certain words. All my love to you, Becky x

I'm from Norway and Sofie and Jakob are definitely some of the most popular names. The years before it was Nora and William. So my name (Nora Sofie) is a combination of those two popular girl names. Although, Nora wasn't that popular when I was born in the mid-1990s, and Sofie is a family name that I would love to use when I have kids. Love hearing all of those beautiful names from alle over the world. Would love to see an Icelandic list of names as well.

Hi SJ! I'm from Brazil and even tough José and Maria are the most popular names trough the times, they are not the most popular BABY names in recent years. In 2017 the favorite girl name in Brazil was Alice, folowed by Sophia, Helena and then Valentina, and the number one boy name was Miguel, wich was followed by Arthur, Bernardo and Heitor. Also we do have different pronunciations for this names, particulary "Alice", "Helena", "Arthur", "Heitor", and the way you pronounced "José" is closer to the spanish pronunciation than the portuguese one. Just some things I tought I could add, but this was a great video in general. Thanks!

As of this year, the most popular girl name in Puerto Rico is Alondra and for boys it's Adrían (Ah-dree-ahn). Alondra means "defender of mankind" and Adrían means "man of Adria" which is derived from the Roman family name Hadrianus, meaning "from Hadria", there were two Roman towns named Hadria but now they are known as Adria and Atri. :)

Hi SJ! Been loving your videos! I am expecting a little girl in April 2019 and we are in the name brainstorming process for our first baby! We have a bit of a fun situation being that my daughter will be the first granddaughter but will also have five great grandparents as well! My husband and I are Canadian, and my grandparents are of Polish and Slavic decent, immigrating to Canada over 50 years ago. My husband’s family heritage is Italian and German. Because I took my husband’s very Italian last name, and because we want to use the middle name Livia (to honour his last living grandparent), we were hoping to find a first name that is not too Italian (since the second and last name will be), but to find something that would be beautiful with the middle name Livia and would be easy for my Eastern European immigrant family (with strong accents) to pronounce! Extremely Anglo-Saxon or Modern names probably won’t work. My name is Alexandra. My grandmothers are Krystyna and Zuzana. My sister is Katherine. My mother is Dorota. We love a softer sound, and I would love to hear what you think in case you are making another “Name My Baby” video any time soon! Hope you are up to the challenge! Lol

Actually Jose and Maria are not the most used baby names in Brazil. They still are very popular because Brazilians don't have middle names but double names, as Jose Henrique, Jose Eduardo or Maria Clara, Maria Eduarda. The most popular names is Brazil are Miguel for boys and Helena (2019) and Alice (2018) for girls.
