Of course, what I would like to see is OS data for pre-1999, because there were a lot fewer devices, and a lot had proprietary OS built in... Looking at the data sources and that it is adjusted by user-agents, a more correct title would be "Most Popular Consumer/End User Operating Systems 1999 - 2022" because OS used on servers are more or less ignored because a server normally don't make outbound browser connections and therefor has no user-agent to measure. "Numbers are showing market share by specific OS, measured by amount of units shipped worldwide". Yes, that explains why there are almost no servers mentioned (they would bring up the Linux share to roughly 90%) and Windows 11 despite being still some sort of beta has such a high share. Almost every Win 11 shipped machine in companys gets downgraded to Win10 for reliability or Upgraded to Linux to work productive. And mobile devices are mixed with normal devices, I think it would make sense to divide mobile and productive devices apart. Shooting portrait films with mobile Devices for Ticktock and doing productive work with normal landscape Monitors are to very different usecases. If Adobe would make their software available for Linux, Apple devices would suffer and get around 3% market share since Apple really tries to get rid of their loyal customers, the only reason to stick to Apple is Adobe. Windows 11 shoved many people to Linux Mint, in combination with e.g. Softmaker Office (only paid once) and Nextcloud this is an alternative since more than 4 years which actually works.
@Hardcore_Remixer Жыл бұрын
If it was by the amout of units shipped, then wouldn't FreeDOS still be top? Many people, especially the new generation, don't pay extra for a preinstalled OS 😂
@anonymouscommentator Жыл бұрын
according to this chart, linux is on a decline. you talk about how mobile devices should be seperated but want servers to enter the chart lol. also i am not sure if there are that many servers in the world compared to enduser devices that linux would make it to 90%. on top of that and as you most likely know yourself, there is no single linux OS, its just a ton of different distributions. imagine if they packed all versions of windows into one category and called it "windows". but maybe to help linux out a little, technically android runs the linux kernel too so at the end of the day it still dominates :D
@GMPranav Жыл бұрын
Windows is so popular that it's various versions are broken into different charts. If we are gonna mix mobile and desktop OSes, then I think atleast we to separate out the major releases. But I understand that getting that data is hard.

The craziest thing back in the day was how long you could last using an older OS. My family PC had Windows 98 all the way up until we bought a new computer with Windows Vista. I literally didn't even know Windows 2000 existed until like a decade later.

Its wierd that most os such as android and linux has been through a lot of versions but windows keep making those versions separate
@costascostas1760 Жыл бұрын
Exactly. For android it would make sense to have different versions but for linux not so much. There are constant kernel updates so you cannot define a new version.
@PeterAuto1 Жыл бұрын
Windows changes a lot between versions, in Android and Linux, changes are much smaller. You could devide Linux into distributions, but I think then it could disappear from the graph completely.
@solandri69 Жыл бұрын
Microsoft charges for Windows version upgrades. That's how they make their money. So they artificially partition the new features and updates to create a "new version" to sell. Version upgrades for Android, iOS, Linux are free and continuous (though long-term support may be spotty). MacOS charges a nominal fee, so most owners just upgrade based if their hardware is still supported.
@natywubet2175 Жыл бұрын
Its just so funny and wierd you dont see android 1 and android 2 and so on but you see windows 7 then 8 as separate. That's all am saying

Many corporations use cheap mini PCs with old laptop processors and old XP era hardware with tweaked/custom forms of Ubuntu running on them for office and internal specialised program use, just unhooked from the internet. Probably invisible to the source of this chart. The company I work for has well over 100 linux computers at my location that, once logged into, remote login to an XP virtual machine for our copyright 1986 software (Im assuming it was deemed notably cheaper than paying to have an impressivly intricate system for its time updated to an OS the machines cant handle and subsequently updating all hardware) A previous major retail employer I worked for (big name hardware store) used a stripped down Xubuntu on all computers and registers.

You can definitely see windows cycle of every other OS flopped. Me, Vista (which I'd actually forgotten about), and 8, all of which were superceded by their successor before they beat their precursor. Now we'll see if 11 suffers a similar fate. I won't upgrade until I can turn off frequent programs without leaving a large empty ugly gap for it in my start menu.
@BeautifulAngelBlossom Жыл бұрын
Windows 11 is better then Windows 10 in a lot aspect
@mike1024. Жыл бұрын
@@BeautifulAngelBlossom I can't get past the mandatory space in the start menu reserved for recent programs that is still there as empty wasted space if you turn it off. Has that changed yet? I might upgrade to 11 and get an alternate start menu solution. I looked at how hard it would be to build one, and it didn't look easy. I actually thought 7 had the best start menu, where you could custom pin a couple of programs at the top if you wanted. 10's start menu is ok, but pinned programs insist on doubling the width of your start menu. The default was the huge mess of live tiles that you had to remove one by one with each install also. What would you say is a good improvement in windows 11?
@Clock_Man_2763 Жыл бұрын
Look at how Windows 11 barely even surpassed Windows 7 in percentage of use just last year in 2022 💀 It’s another proof that Windows 7 is the best and most legendary OS in the history of computing, it’s a childhood OS and looks so clean and fresh 💖😊

I changed to a house later on maybe on the same year and the house had a room with a computer pre installed with windows xp, i have no idea when i started using it but i did use it (I was so scared of the start up and shut down sounds because it was too loud and when I did use it I made sure the speakers where on 0) the computer was used until around mid 2017 when the pc was changed and to this day the os on the computer is windows 10. Weirdly when I heard windows 11 launched my computer can't run windows 11 which means i'm stuck on windows 10 (the version being used is windows 10 pro 2H22)
