I just love these episodes so much. As a Para rider who hasn't got a fancy horse (14.1hh welsh x trotter) and don't have the money for super regular lessons, anything I can pick up from these lessons is super helpful. I make sure to watch the ads through as I feel like I'm at least contributing as much as I possibly can and hopefully when I'm in a better position I can contribute even more!

I love that you have fun and do silly things with your ponies. The only dressage lessons I've ever taken was with someone who kept her horses kinda just technical. We didn't really get to do anything fun very much and even trotting slow ever was a big no no. We always had to be in frame and proper. I think it is amazing that you teach them to open gates and deal with all kinds of things. That's the way I was taught with my western disciplines and when I started dressage was very disappointed that you couldn't have fun with your horse but now I'm seeing that you still can even with dressage. Me and my new mare are now finding joy in our dressage and riding. I don't think she ever really got to experience that. She always had to be a proper dressage horse.

Absolutely loved this video and I had a brilliant session today putting some of it into practice with my mare. When I start working on trot-canter transitions she gets tense and tries to run off, but I slowed my rise and got control of the tempo and worked on getting her more relaxed and soft. It took a while on her sticky rein, but eventually she came soft and the transition was awesome! So pleased with how much were improving thanks to your help!!

Hello I have a question! I’m riding a horse that hasn’t been worked in over a year. I’m still working on getting her on the bit and getting her to except contact. I’m having trouble getting her to slow down when she’s not excepting the contact. How do I get her on the bit and slowed down? How do I get her to slow down when she is throwing her head up. Shes a lot of energy! haha! Thanks so much! lots of love! CANT WAIT TO WATCH THIS VIDEO!!!❤️

This is a really good question. One of ours does this exact same thing no matter what you do. She's just so unwilling to work with you and does every trick in the book to escape work and the more you try to push her the more annoyed she becomes then your just fighting a losing battle. It's so frustrating and it's taking the fun out of riding with her.

@@kimberleybond8219 I know I know I have horses like that. Doing trick training with treats and fun stuff that they like in the middle of a session has worked for me. You just can't fight these horses, you have to gain their trust and acceptance of the work.

@@kimberleybond8219 aww that’s hard! My horse it’s less that she doesn’t want to work and more the she is soooo foward and likes to race into things. She’s quite young and still isn’t fully comfortable being on the bit so she will be on it for a bit and then swing her head up. I’m just trying to learn how to get her on the bit (because my last horse took the bit very easily and was basically always on it) but then after she’s on the bit how to slow her down! I hope you can get your horse to enjoy her work!

Steph here from northern WI. Excited to watch this! How do I keep my horse from kicking or knocking the ground poles?
@YourRidingSuccess
@YourRidingSuccess 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Steph! great question... often our position helps and or hinders them ...try to keep your upper body upright as they go over the pole and move forwards with your horse's natural movement. If you lean too far forwards, you'll be putting your weight onto his front end, which will unbalance him and make it harder for him to clear the poles. xx

Awesome! Question, when you circle to improve the suppleness, what dictates whether you would open the inside rein a bit, or instead keep the inside rein against the neck and open the outside a bit? What are you feeling to determine which to use, the shoulder falling in or not or just the rib cage being sticky?

@@YourRidingSuccess so we had a pretty progressive ride! I wish I filmed it. However as im learning this new guy Im noticing some of his quorks. Any tips on helping a horse that gets snatchy with the bit? He likes to pull down and away when i pick up the contact from walk to trot if i have given him a long rein walk break. And i take the reins up nice and slow which kind of helps but he still gets cranky and pulls. Hes got a loose ring snaffle with cheeky guards. Part of me feels like he needs a 3 piece bit instead of a 2 piece. But part of me thinks its a habit. He anticipates the trot from walk and gets really pushy and grabs the bit. Hes a sport horse hes super nice but hes got some funky habits for being so young 😅 its almost like he gets nervous that im going to get to loud with my hands and yell at him by pulling to hard. He has had other riders and i was told they got pretty loud with their hands so it makes since. I dont know lol. I think maybe his balance also still needs more work. His canter transitions have gotten better but we havent been doing a lot of canter yet just because i want his shoulders to listen to me at the trot first and have him going correct in the trot before doing to much in the canter.
@YourRidingSuccess
@YourRidingSuccess 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Samantha, one thing to consider is with the loose ring snaffle, the point of the double jointed bit is it takes the "nut cracker" action out of the bit, a snaffle with just one join in the middle hits the roof of the mouth when you apply pressure. This is why as our knowledge of the horses mouth evolved, bit makers made bits with two joins in the middle (so the bit is 3 pieces instead of 2). These are now the most common snaffle bits used in dressage.

Hi Bambini, I only wear spurs because in many levels of dressage they are compulsory. So i wear them but rarely use them . Whips I very rarely use, or hold, for the opposite reason. In most levels of dressage they are not allowed. So I tend to train in only whats allowed in the area xx

Yes!! Teach us more stuff to be frugal xD love love the idea of the potty And how fast you get him supple is amazing, anxious to try it on sunday. I also had to buy some gloves for riding because last sunday riding i was on a hack and we were galloping and My mare got to excited and wanted to go crazy running. If there is no space to circle and connection is Lost, how can you stop the horse/slow to trot in these situation? I had to sit down during gallop and bounce on her back 😩and hold her mouth to prevent her from going all in, and ended up loosing the skin off one finger from the reign. My teacher says sometimes its like that, that much force to stop or Control a horse? Is this true? I always heard from you and Tash that should be soft on the mouth.. and i think in situations like this is Impossible... What do you think? And getting the horse on the bit, initially, is itt soft too? If you play with your fingers and they dont lower their heads, not with circles not with finger play, some horses accept easily but others is always head up.. Please also tell us how to get a saddle, styrups and reigns that are good but not expensive - like the potties. I would love My own horse gear xD the saddles at my school are só hard My butt hurts after classes xDD some people even go long beforr class to choose the best saddles 😂
@YourRidingSuccess
@YourRidingSuccess 2 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Gloves are always a great idea for this reason! Glad you made it out safely! With hacking it is so important to be safe and sometimes the horses do get excited but with correct training in the arena they rarely get out of control, the big thing to put your horse and you in situations where you can be in control - hopefully you do not have to experience that again! If you watch this video about connecting the horse into the bridle it will explain about how to connect the horse - try not to think about soft/hard but rather a positive connection through the rein kzbin.info/www/bejne/o3OsmpKFa6yJr9U

My horse has done a fair deal of free jumping, and she loves it. Bucks the other long side out of happiness. I would like to start a little bit of jumping with her, but I'm afraid she will do the same thing with me on her, as she does when she's free jumping. Would what you do in this episode be a good way to introduce her to being more "calm" over poles/jumps, and not go into a bucking series as soon as she has the chance? Thank you for all the videos!

Alicia, u did it again! Amazing session on step by step approach to pole work and how to help & motivate the horse! Do it first in a small jog - I feel this could even be helpful to the experienced stable lesson horse that does not do much pole work. The next time I get a pole work lesson (unfortunately not often), I will make sure to do that for the first two rounds;) The tip about safety by keeping reins short and rising a little forward is very useful. This is one of your strengths, focusing on personal safety too! I have 2 questions: 1. What do u mean to help the horse to find his openness? Do you mean help him find his balance? 2. At 19:26 min, Mowgley was reacting a little while going over the pole on the left rein. You used renvers to get him more connected. Why use renvers and not other tools?
@YourRidingSuccess
@YourRidingSuccess 2 жыл бұрын
Great questions! When Alicia talks about openness she means the suppleness through his body, so "letting go" of tension and not being stuck in the body so being "open" in the body. Another super question - the reason for using renvers is because he naturally wanted to expand the right side of his body and contract the left (so looking too much left) so renver contracts the right side and expands the left (opposite of what he wants to do). The renver is excellent because you can do and stay in track (know where horses body is) and it is a more suppling exercise than just taking counter flexion. Hope this helps x
@hollandtaitai
@hollandtaitai 2 жыл бұрын
@@YourRidingSuccess Hey, thanks for the reply! I understand. I just wonder if she has chosen renvers on the left rein because 1. Mowgley was already drifting a little to the right due to his natural left bend and the right side is the wall, so leg yield to the right is out; 2. Alicia wanted to keep Mowgley’s front on the same track to look at the pole so leg yield to the left and shoulder-in towards the wall are out; 3. How about travers since Mowgley is already bent to the left? 4. Has she chosen renvers because that kills 2 birds in 1 stone - keeps the track in front and supples the right side of the body at the same time while on the left rein? When Alicia rode the right rein, she helped Mowgley to supple up his right with a leg yield in the right circle and onto the wall, and then rode into the pole track with a little shoulder-in. 1. Could she have used travers instead? Sorry for so many questions! Alicia rides very intuitively. This is my fifth year of riding and I feel kind of stuck. I wonder how you make which riding choice to help the horse opens up in a particular situation like the ones Alicia has demonstrated.
@YourRidingSuccess
@YourRidingSuccess 2 жыл бұрын
Love the questions! Okay so well done with your problem solving - you are right!!! The reason to not use Travers in this instance is because riding a travers while travelling left would mean riding a left travers which would encourage his left bend instead of making him more even by using renvers - does this make sense? Your second question of travers to the right is a good one, what you need to think about Travers is it is actually a difficult movement to ride correctly, much harder for the horse than a leg yield or shoulder in as it requires the horse to stay perfectly upright in the shoulders and balance and then bend in the ribcage and make 4 tracks - to ride it correctly (ie not yielding off outside aids, actually bending in half) is harder than other movements and thats why travers and half pass come later in the training and tests than leg yield and shoulder in. Hope this helps x

I would be interested to know how you go about planning what you're going to do in a riding session. Do you have an idea in your mind before you start or do you start riding him and do what you think needs doing that day. If you plan how far out do you plan and how strictly do you stick to that plan in a session. I'm sure at your level a lot of it is instinctive, but I am thinking more for a beginner, I know when I rode I'd so often go I need to do some riding/training, get in the arena and my mind would just go blank on what to do. Maybe that could be an idea for a video. Like this would be a series of good exercises to work on in a week (or whatever) at this level of riding to work on this problem, kind of thing. Anyway just an idea.

Hi Alecia: 👋 Mowgley going great. I use Trot Cavellitis for strengthening the Trot. I am ecstatic how far Mowgley has gotten in 7 weeks. How much down time did he have after he raced? I just got a dynamite mover 6 yr old OTTB right off the track. 51 races & won $ 52, 000. I have worked w her 14 sessions since she arrived 10/6/21 & she has more relaxation to go. Simple things like seeing other horses be led gets her excited. Also here in the US they train the horse to urinate in the Cross Ties or grooming stall at the track for drug testing. So I am always cleaning up pee before I have to ride. My other OTTB still pees in the grooming stall at least 2x after 2 years of me owning him. Thank you
