One of the most practical laptops out there. The Dell Latitude has great port selection, 14 inch display, very portable, and powerful.

Yeah we've been issued these at my current job recently, and this has to be one of the best designed laptops I've ever used from the port selection, the thin bezels, the keyboard layout, and power/battery ratio management.

Great video, as someone who has worked in IT for 15+ years, it's nice to see someone give an honest review about a business class laptop. It's good to see companies like Dell, Lenovo, and HP still include the functional ports on their laptops, and not go all USB C. They recognize that these devices are bought in large quantities, used by IT staff, and regular staff in general who don't always need fancy and thin, they need functionality. I use this exact laptop at work, and it's fantastic. Thin and light laptops might be nice for home, but when it comes to work, I also need something that is practical for what I need to get done, and has all the functions I need. Working in IT, I use my ethernet port daily, and would hate to carry a USB -> Ethernet dongle with me.

Picked up a refurb of these with an i5, 16GG of RAM and a 250GB SSD for just £150 a couple of weeks ago. Put in a dual rank 16GB set I had and a 500GB H10 NVMe (shame its a gen early to use the Optane part with bifurcation) I had laying around and its fab. Much rather take this out for work use than my Framework.

A note on the display, it is a SVA, not IPS. That's why it has deep blacks and more saturated colors. That slot you were wondering is indeed a micro SIM slot, if you get the optional model with a WWAN card.

I have the Latitude 7470, 7480 and 5491 with a 6 core cpu and nvidia graphics. I still find myself falling back to my 7480. It works with my Dell thunderbolt dock, offers 16th of ram and best of all Linux compatibility, It's also much better on battery than my 5491. A huge improvement over the 7470 in many ways. I still love my 7470 for compatibility and it's my fall back when I am in a jiffy. But my 7480 remains my go to doing light to medium work loads.

I can't get used to the t480. The display has a strong yellow tint. I tried to change color settings. Even install Ubuntu and still very warm dull colors. So that was a major factor for me going back to Dell. Kind of disappointed since the t480 had 8th gen i5.

I know this is an old video, but oh well, here I am. When I left my last IT job, they gave me the option to buy the laptop I used for $50. It's a 7480 with the i7 and 16gb of RAM. I absolutely love the device, but it's time to upgrade it. What am I getting? a 7490 motherboard. It fits this chassis perfectly, and it has a much faster and modern 8th gen i7 with 4 cores rather than the dual core the 80 came with. I'll be adding and NVMe drive to speed things up, too, as the 80 came with a SATA M.2.

Thx. At least one guy that values functionality over design :D I am currently soooo pissed off by Lenovo as they are going down the "ever slimmer" hipster bullshit road. Soldering everything, cutting away ports just to squeze out another .5mm and some 50g and hence sacrificing usability and serviceability. This is the cancer in the notebook industry these days. If they at least kept one line for "work horses".... Probably changing to Dell this year.

@jnjsez
@jnjsez 4 жыл бұрын
Those are all great choices. For AWS and Power BI, I don't see the need for dedicated gpu unless 3d rendering required but don't see which. For those platforms I would focus on cpu power more. Such as i7 or i9. Dell XPS 7590 or thinkpad p53. Personally I'd choose Dell XPS 7590, proper i9 (Dell didn't underpower it for themals so proper cpu), and dedicated gtx card (but underpowered for thermals). So you get both cpu and gpu in something very portable and sturdy and beautiful.

I have Latitude 5490 which is very similar to this and i totally agree both versions are very practical for technicians. 5490 have better ethernet port on back side without that weird lever (i just don't trust it, i seen it broken on other laptops), display is very good, keyboard almost perfect (only page up and page down could be better under arrows up/down with fn, but it is just my prefference). What i really like is touchpad, real touchpad with separate buttons, not annoying clickpad. Battery could be bigger, but it is still enough. Still don't know yet, how long it will last in extreme, after 5 hours of work it had around 50% (with Debian Linux 9.8 & LXDE, i am not using MS Windows). For audio editing I find it's not as taxing as video editing. So this is more than enough for audio. But for video editing it depends. For light 1080p editing it's fine. They need to make better trackpoints. I own this laptop and it is very good but having used Thinkpads in the past, i can tell you that Dell's trackpoint implementation needs work. For one the shape makes it feel slippery. This is superficial because it wouldn't be too hard to get a replacement. It's also ridiculously sensitive. I have messed with the settings to try and rectify this and it's improved slightly but still not useable.

@@jnjsez Hi, i also own both the Dell 7480 and a Thinkpad T480. I had been a Thinkpad user in the past but had two bad experiences with hardware failing which is why i tried Dell. I chose the 7480 because it had a trackpoint like Thinkpad. I was very disappointed. Luckily the trackpad was still very good. Missing the trackpoint i bought the T480. I've had the laptop for six months and my screen has developed a weird 3mm light spot. My Dell has sat in a corner collecting dust for a while but i booted it up the other day and i instantly noticed the brighter and more beautiful screen. The audio was louder too, (although it distorted at max volume, but was still louder at lower volume). The general feel and sturdiness of the laptop also felt better. I know it's logically a backward step because the T480 is a little more powerful but i'm honestly thinking about going back to my Dell. For users that travel with laptop I'll suggest 7 series. For those not travel as much and on budget 5 is probably better option.

Appreciate your input. Design-wise I can see your point. I do like the look of my T480. If it could get the same display panel as the Dell 7480, I'd be very happy. I went through three T480 laptops and the 1080p panel does not show colors well.

A few days ago I did a clean install on my Dell 7480. Download the media creation tool from Microsoft. Install on usb drive. Restart laptop and press f12 during boot (Dell logo). After install let update. If need specific driver's I'll Google search Dell drivers and enter the service tag and I'll get drivers. Hope this helps.

Depends on if you need that 8th gen CPU. If you really need that cpu upgrade then maybe, but that's if you are doing any scripting, running tasks, encoding, etc. But for general usage I'd wait as it's the same body. I'd wait till new body and siginficat overall internals, maybe 10th gen CPU. But if you need more CPU power then sure, it may be worth it.

The battery can last a work day. It's rated at 68wh so larger than average. Linux should work fine. I've installed Ubuntu on a NUC with similar configuration including i5-7200. I would be surprised if have issues with Linux on this.

Google Google Quick tip, make sure to get minimum 1080p display. With Lenovo and Dell, I've noticed they use TN panels on the 768p. With 1080p and higher, I get the IPS display which is more vibrant and crisper.

Google Google Good question. Several ways in Windows. If you have the laptop go to the Display Settings. But if its on the way or I haven't received, I'll just go to Dell Drivers website and enter Service Tag. Then System Configuration > Original Configuration, and expand Components. Then look up the display, you'll see the resolution. On Linux, one thing I've tried in past is look at the file /var/log/Xorg.0.log and look for EDID. Look for active H (horizontal) and active V (vertical). Hope this helps. If on ubunut desktops, mint, or mate, just go to setting for display and look at resolution.

Very portable? - not. It's one of the heaviest laptops I've used. 1.52kg (the lightest I own was 1.12kg only with the same battery capacity). It's just okay in terms of weight. Beuatiful display? - not. Only 6 bits per channel, 90% sGRB only. It's just okay for business tasks. Powerful? - not. It's just okay for all office and internet tasks. My Iphone works faster. it's just okay. But why I bought it? 1. Perfect keyboard. Sadly, the Latitude 7410 and 7420 does not have so good keyboard layout. 2. Silent when not charging, quite when charging. 3. Soft touch materials 4. Long battery life.
