I love mine. It was my very first. My dad bought it from a guy he worked with for a whopping $75 when I joined band in 5th grade. That was almost fifty years ago and it's still on my kit. The warmest, most versatile metal shelled drum I've ever heard.

No session drummer ever got fired for bringing a Ludwig LM400 to a studio gig. I have one and it has become my primary, "go to" snare. One of the best purchases I have ever made as a drummer. I tune mine in the 'high' region and it just sings!! Great snare!!

Hey Mike! Thanks for being here. I hear that haha! It’s a classic drum that almost anyone could use. A workhorse. Absolutely, there are other great drums but this one just seems to feel right for me (and you haha)! Hope you’re playing lots of gigs! 🙌

I purchased a diecast hoop for my 60s ludalloy superphonic. It dries out the sound a little and gives it something original but generally I find it takes away the original asthetic of the superphonic. I particularly found the rim shot sound with the diecast hoop was too harsh when recording.

I hear all that! Having options are good and def makes these drums more flexible. Also, set up choices can depend on the music you play and what you’re looking for from the drum. Very cool. Thanks for checking out the video!

Why didn’t you play it?

Does the new and old version Ludwig 400 snare as a different sound quality in between please ?
@therealjonsmith12 ай бұрын
Hey Emmanuel! I’m not an expert on the different models but I’ve owned / played many of them, and used them professionally. I haven’t noticed any appreciable difference. Some would debate I’m sure. Differences aside, I like the general DNA of this model! Hope that helps brotha 🙌 Btw, what’s your favorite snare drum?

Where can I buy those lug locks? I have a Sonor Beech snare that can't stay in tune because it used to be a floor tom :)

Hey Ted! I found them here: www.gaugerpercussion.com/lockerztrade-tension-rod-locks.html

@@therealjonsmith1 and my free floater is a 6 inch. It’s pretty beat up, but she sounds great. Looking forward to seeing your pearl.

Steve Gadd didn’t use a Ludwig snare. Jeff Porcaro didn’t use a Ludwig snare. Ringo Starr didn’t use an LM400. Charlie Watts didn’t use a Ludwig snare. Saying it’s the most recorded snare assumes a lot including what the recording engineer adds or subtracts from the drums being recorded. It’s a good drum but there are many others that are just as good if not better and for less money.

Hey Matt, thanks for chiming in on this! I can confirm Jeff Porcaro, etc. used these drums. But, instead of comparing notes on exactly who played them, I just wanted to highlight the fact that the drum has become ubiquitous and is used all over the world. It has been argued over (which I have zero interest in) and proposed that the Ludwig Supra 400 / 402 model is the most recorded snare drum in history. I can def agree with you that there may be other models that sound fantastic and may be less expensive. Everything is debatable of course. Also, you are so right about the recording / engineering process shaping and changing a snare drum in the studio. The spirit of the channel and this video is to open up a conversation with you and anyone here! Thanks again for being here and taking your time to offer your insight 🙌

If you find a copy of the Zildjian catalog from around 1986-87, there is a photo of Steve Gadd playing a Ludwig Supraphonic 400.

Do you know ow of a way to serial date Ludwig? I have inherited Bill Lazarus’ kit from I believe ‘68, but I’m not sure. It came with a supraphonic, but it doesn’t have a 60’s badge. Any help is appreciated.

Hey Curtis, that’s very cool! I’m not an expert on that side of things but I bet you someone here could chime in to help you. Anyone know how to help with this? A website or a friend that may know? Professional Drum Shop in Hollywood may be able to help: 323-469-6285
