Most Remote part of Nakasendo Trail| Karuizawa | Leeches Attack | Eating Fugu Fish | Back to Tokyo

Our Nakasendo Trail adventure was coming to an end. From Narai, we took a train to Karuizawa, where we met with our friend C. Karuizawa is a popular tourist destination among Japanese. We enjoyed a lovely walk in the forest where we could admire beautiful holiday villas. The hotel we stayed in, Hotel Tsuruya, served us Fugu (potentially deadly ) Fish for dinner. We survived.
The following day, we walked from Karuizawa to Yokokawa. That felt like the most remote and the least travelled part of the Nakasendo Trail. We enjoyed the eerie atmosphere of the forest until we were attacked by leeches. What followed, I can only describe as a bloodbath.

I’m so sorry I didn’t reply earlier. The last leg of Nakasendo was from Karuizawa to Yokokawa and it was around 16 km (6 hours) walk. I thought I’d share the link to the website where you can see how long was each day hike okujapan.com/trips/nakasendo In terms of the leeches, I believe they are there only during the warmer months, but we only found them on the very last leg of the walk. Hello! I also plan to do a Nakasendo Trail hike this year and hope you don't mind a few questions. 1. Would you know if the leeches are there all year? 2. Was the hike from Karuizawa to Yokokawa, if yes, how long was the entire hike? Thank you!
