I have had a few deaf violin students. In most cases they fell in love with violin before they lost their hearing. Some of them had 10-20% of natural hearing left. They had to rely on my feedback regarding tone. "Use more bow, more pressure on this finger" etc. As there was some layers of tone quality that they couldn't hear themselves. And similarly for finger placement. I never could say "can you hear that that is flat". I would have to tell them it was flat so they could memorise the feeling of the in tune placement. They would use electronic tuners to get the strings in tune. Maybe they feel the vibrations of the violin, a sensation that keyboards and woodwinds wouldn't give them. maybe the fact the sound post is so close to the ear means that it engages some of their natural hearing that is left. A few of my deaf students have completed grade 6 violin. None of them would ever win americas got talent though. But they have been able to have joy in music. But of course, now I know that all they need is Pantene to exceed all expectations in their playing.

ye it's possible to play instruments you don't have to manually adjust to- namely string instruments where finding the right notes and playing them in key and at the right pitch is your responsibility. Piano, clarinet, flute, etc. aren't tuned by the player and are more reliant on pressing the correct things than they are on actually using your hearing so long as you know what to do with your hands (and mouth), i gather

@E hmm I don't think they are assuming it is in America, if they were assuming a location it was Korea. They just mentioned what happens in America as another example from a very different place. But I must say.... as an European I am terrified. No one gets bullied in such way. Words are pretty much the near maximum. In Slovakia you would most likely get your Behavioural Grade lowered for slamming someones lunch and if you were to repeat it you would get either expelled or in likely hood of repeating the grade. (You don't have lessons on behaviour or anything but they mark it. If you are normal (not aggressive pretty much or not doing some inappropriate stuff like damaging property) you always get the highest grade automatically.

Just turning on my literary analysis side, I think the "close your eyes, you will see" was an attempt at a sort of comparison between her limited sensations. If you close your eyes, you can't see. If you are deaf you can't hear. The old man is trying to make a sort of empowering message that you can do anything you want to, even if your senses seem to be working against you. When you close your eyes, you can see. Even though you are deaf, you can hear. Of course, the logistical aspect of this doesn't really make much sense, but the message and hope are nice.

I‘m not deaf but I agree. Many people don't know the "legally deaf" thing (if your hearing is under a certain threshold, you are deaf, no matter whether you can hear or not). Twoset should apologize for what they say at 7:27, which is pretty ableist. They really ought not to be so ignorant because classic musicians are at high risk of hearing loss due prolonged exposure to loud sounds. Some violinists get hearing loss in left ear because it's the ear that is near to the instrument. I don't know if Brett and Eddy wear earplugs during practicing (they should!). Apart from this, I'd like to them to talk about hard-to-discuss topic about classic musicians with humor, like hearing problems and use of performance-enhancing drugs (e.g. beta blockers). I think that would be a good video.

Can I ask, are you more sensitive to the varying vibrations your instrument makes when playing? ie. can that help you know which notes you're playing? It's often said/thought that other senses are increased when one of the senses is impaired so I was just wondering if something like that would be more pronounced to you compared to someone without any hearing loss.
@daniwe3782
@daniwe3782 5 жыл бұрын
@@BlogWhatTheFruitcake it does help but it is very unaccurate, as some notes have the same vibration. I wasnt born deaf so i can imagine the note that im playing, and i can hear some very low pitched notes so i usually play songs that are on that range, but every musician is one of a kind and my way of playing may be different that it is to others.

deaf people can read lips. also, it's possible the girl can feel the vibrations of the music. while Beethoven was deaf, he wasn't born as such and already knew theory and everything. He became deaf later on in life and he learned to compose while deaf through previous knowledge and vibrations of the piano.
@ido9988

Beethoven composed also before he went deaf, so he had that going for him. At around 1812 he completely lost all of his remaining hearing. Still, his best and most known works are after that year. It is not exactly known what made him deaf, but he was reported to be suffering from recurring ear infections. Perhaps something that is treatable in this day and age.

Hi! as someone who’s hard of hearing (HoH), with moderate to severe hearing loss, usually a ‘deaf’ person who isn’t completely deaf would be seen wearing a hearing device which would help them to hear generally! these devices can be seen as either: hearing aids or a cochlea implant, which are typically worn inside the ears or just above the ear on the head. These devices are personalised specifically to your hearing severity so you can pick up on sounds you either can’t usually hear (or sounds that are lowered incase your hearing is sensitive to sounds that are loud for you). Just incase y’all wanted some clarity on how we hear! I personally like the ad other than when the guy says music is a visual thing. Everything requires most of our senses we use in everyday life lol so I could see the in accuracy. Also the bowing lmaooooo. But never the less, it’s great that there is some representation of some certain struggles deaf people go through! I do realise that in some cultures a hearing disability is portrayed negatively, and often people are bullied because of it. Whether this be culture, or the nature of the person bullying someone, please understand that not everyone who has a disability will follow this stigma that we will give up on trying things that may be more difficult for us! it just means we have to work a little harder, and if you love playing an instrument (like me lol, I play the ukulele, and have recently shown interest in the violin) then you’d have more fun working towards something you love! And again, like Twoset say: “go practise!” it helps a lot lol. Thanks for reading! :)
