Very nice setup. Great video. I started using my collets more lately.

Intention to inform: made the same with ER16 chucks. BUT When you are using drillbits or a one-lip drill you have to get the toolholder bolted twice to the toolpost. Or the toolholder will been pushes out of the 90° alingment. To use endmils is ok but it can be a pain in the arse when you are about to drive them theier whole cutting lentgh into the workpiece. That can and will result in chattering. I made me today another clamp-like fixture. When you are interested i can make you a clip. Nice work.

I’ve replaced the chucks on my mini mill and lathe with an ER20 setup for drilling. Takes a bit more time but the results are worth it. Don’t have a DRO so not easy to adapt a tool holder on the lathe for drilling but could have advantages for boring.

Ummm, I’m liking that quick change system. I use all the way upto ER50 on my ML7, that gives me upto 36mm collets.

It's far more rigid if the ER holder is at 90 degrees in the toolblock. As the force is then directly at the center of the toolblock there is no rotational forces on the toolblock and compound.
@opticalmechanic
@opticalmechanic Ай бұрын
@@marley589 the only trouble with doing that is the overall length of the set up is significantly longer because of the size of the chuck which takes up precious real estate on the machine but I agree it would be ideal to direct the cutting pressure along the z axis to avoid the torsion applied to the tool post.
@marley589
@marley589 Ай бұрын
@@opticalmechanic you cut most of it off. It's only long to hold onto. Clamp on the diameter behind the nut.

The Chinese make very short shanked ER collet chucks to fit in gang tool holding blocks for programmable tool room lathes. Mine do not have any markings so can’t mention any brands.

@@37yearsofanythingisenough39 I have that type of setup with an ER40. I'll try to post a quick video next week. I already have one posted with a 3-jaw keyless chuck holding a 20mm diameter endmill !

@@machinists-shortcuts the 3 jaw drill chuck with an endmill is gutsy. I’d stick with the er 40 collet.

It is extremely important to not try this by using an end mill in a three jaw keyless chuck. Any vibration will open the chuck slightly and all hell will break loose. Good video

What size pewe tool post is that AA up to 12mm or AD up to 16mm?
@opticalmechanic
@opticalmechanic Ай бұрын
@@BarbaraGers this is a size A tool post on the front. The rear tool post is a size AA.

@opticalmechanic Ok, than it is the AD2075 up to 20mm from PWT? But you can not use 20mm tooling on the solid tool post, What is the largest unmodified tool you can use with this tool post?
@opticalmechanic
@opticalmechanic Ай бұрын
@@BarbaraGers are you referring to the holders for the turning tools? If so, I use AD2090. The width of the channel is 20mm so you could fit a tool up to that size. Whether you can get centre height is another question, depending on the machine. I 5/8” tooling on my lathe because I have lowered the height of the tool post by removing the compound slide. Hope that answers the question. Regarding the size of slot drill / end mill, I would not hesitate using a 20mm diameter tool.
@BarbaraGers
@BarbaraGers Ай бұрын
I have also a Myfort Super 7. If you use 5/8" tooling on your A size tool post this is about 16mm. PWT offers a AD1675S tool post extra for the Myford for tooling up to 16mm on the standard Myford compound slide. But I'm not sure if the AJ3080 holder would fit the AD1675S tool post. How high is your solid tool post?
@opticalmechanic

I'm sure the Multifix tooling setup being much more repeatable and rigid helps here. There were expensive back when they were German and Swiss made, still expensive not for the average home shop / hobbyist.
@opticalmechanic
@opticalmechanic Ай бұрын
@@ryebis Multifix as a platform is more expensive than other options but you get what you pay for and I bought mine for work purposes not just for hobby use so it has paid for itself fortunately. Used prices are much better but they don’t come up very often.

From my experience, the downside of inexpensive, Chinese made ER collets is runout, which can be abysmally bad in the smaller collets. A product review of an ER system should include the accuracy of the collets and collet chuck.
