This video made me realise that many SA ladies dont know to ask these questions to West Africans that they want to have kids with, which is scary as i feel like our trust is being taken advantage of. In SA, it's a must to make sure you dont date relatives no matter how distant the relation is or have a surname in common. That is what has protected us from conditions like these in the passed.

Hi Chimma, nice topic. sickle cell is very common in west Africa and central Africa. that's why we don't focus on it here in South Africa. a lot of south africans don't even know of sickle cell, I myself only know about it because i'm studying a health sciences course. the other part about miscarriage that you spoke about is about rhesus status. we do test the rhesus status of pregnant woman from the first day they go to the clinic. so ladies, that part is sorted.

True Sis ,SS is very common in west africa ,hence i'm curious to know why this genotype thing isn't a thing here in South Africa.Thank God the rhesus factor is been sorted out during pregnancy.

We really don't have a problem that much with the genotype check of a thing because our health system is a top notch we only advice pregnant women to go early to the clinic so that they'll check the pregnancy.if anything going wrong they get help immediately but we thank you sister with the information.

SCD is prevalent in tropical areas and areas in which Malaria is prevalent, we are neither, hence the neglect in genotype testing.

Sickle cell is not in South African gens , that’s why it’s usually not tested here in South Africa. But in Nigeria we’re we come from we have that gene and that’s why it’s tested in Nigeria 😅, nice one chimma ❤

I'm a pharmacist, here in Nigeria SCD cases is high. South Africa has a low incidence of sickle cell disease.

Most of South Africans always become aware of their blood grouping when sick or pregnant, so that we can know in advance how to react in case of emergency. Honestly I don't see that being made compulsory in SA because it's not necessary. If it was,so far it could have been taken into consideration. The health issues in SA is taken very seriously, so if it was that important I promise you it could have been included in our clinic and hospital routines. We do have patients who suffer from sickle cell anemia, but not majority of SAcans,that's why it's not done routinely. Yes I don't blame the ladies for not knowing their genotype which can also entail things like their eye colour,anything to do with their genes. We only learn about genes and blood grouping when there's a health issue involved. So far I can say there's nothing alarming to take that seriously into making it a clinic/hospital routine check up,it will be unnecessary misuse of resources. Everything in the Healthcare system in SA has a Guideline on how to manage, eg Maternal Guidelines, STI Guidelines, with algorithms,so yaa.....no need at all. But thanks for enlightening people about your topic.🙏

It's not done like that; you don just ask a person "what's your genotype" coz such are not necessarily English words but scientific terms. You have create context and then ask the question when you you are sure there is common understanding

There SCD is not common in SA hence there is no need for people to do the Genotype test for marriage purposes. The only denger is that some South African women got married by Africans from areas of high risk, without knowing. They do not do research about things like that. A man from Nigeria for example, who is considered not eligible to marry acording to the outcome of the genotype, simply come to SA and find an ignorant woman and marry her. No one teaches the poor South African women about this. I wish this video had the capacity to reach millions of Southern Africa women. People need to make informed choices.

I don't think this type of testing or the purpose of, would stand the constitutional muster in SA. You may not discriminate people based on health issues. It also sounds like genetic engineering.

SCD is extremely rare in South Africa. I think Bantu peoples in general don't have have it, including in Congo, Mozambique, Uganda etc. The majority of doctors go to medical school, go to practice medicine and retire without ever seeing a case of Sickle Cell Disease/Anaemia The only genotype we know is whether we were born XX or XY (sex chromosomes)😂😂

As a South African, I am only familiar with genotypes in Life Science which I did in high school. I don't think many of us know their genotypes probably because SA has low case of sickle cell. Those who know their blood types are those working in risky occupations such as military, police, security, etc or those who were hospitalised and required blood donation

SA don't have the high prevalence of that genetic disorder. Probably your genes are too close due to intermarrying of families which is not prevalent in SA.

we probably have the oldest genetic make up in the world and the most diverse due to khoi DNA, we also don't have much genetic disorder because of the same genetic make, you ancestors were probably reproducing with their siblings and cousins
