What are the strangest and most unusual techniques in #DragonBall ? The series of Dragon Ball is known for its action, but also its times when there weird and strange techniques from some of the side characters. Even though #DragonBallZ was more serious and formulaeic than its past iteration, there were moments that made us sit up and take notice. From Majin Buu to the DBZ Movie minions, we take a look at these powers and even credit #DragonBallSuper and #SuperDragonBallHeroes for its balance of wacky and stoic combat!

Personally, I don't like it because it frames the weird powers as superpowers but people are just born with them. That just feels like superheroes/villains minus an origin but I like origins. I prefer either dragonballs approach of either just an ability they have or ki/muscle control. It's framed as martial arts and for some reason martial arts producing nonsense energy blasts feels like a thing before dragonball but that may just be because I never really knew a world predragonball. One piece I feel does the best job with weird wacky powers where even the strongest characters can have very bizarre powers. The origin for the powers is also unique with devil fruits and, given how specific to the setting and relatively originless they are in one piece, I'm not sure any other series or genre has a similar comparison (except maybe Jojo stands but I haven't watched jjba).

Gosh, there were several for me to be sure. A couple for starters from back in the day were Bacterion, whose ability was silly but sensible and practical: overwhelm the opponents senses and use his great physique with lessened resistance. From World's Strongest, the rubbery blob guy who was fairly resilient and stretchy enough to just lob Roshis's Ki back at him and almost wrap himself around Goku, which could have left him vulnerable to attacks from below that the creature could survive if he didn't Kaioken through first.

Hey masako, in the gine-verse, since raditz is off exploring space, does that mean broly and paragus will be found early? I mean raditz has instant transmission, the farther he goes out the more likely he is to sense broly's power, and broly's power is pretty big not to notice.

I always wished one of the human characters had learned Ginyu's body snatching technique, and used it against one of the big villains of the series. I always thought that would be an interesting twist. Suddenly, one of the weaker characters in in a massively strong body, and the evil villain is basically on the weakest level possible.

The Devilmite Beam of Devilman in Dragon Ball is pretty OP as heck because it allows Devilman to defeat opponents way far above his weight class if they have so much evil in their hearts like Frieza and King Cold or even Saiyan Saga Vegeta, Nappa and Raditz.

So chiaotzu knows some odd magic stuff, why not do a what if with them as a sort of mage for the group, progressing by improvising and learning techniques from people likw the yardratians or guldo's paralysis and time stopping shenanigans. Could be interesting to see something so different compared to the usual fist fights or energy blasts that you'd expect these days, instead having someone with a far more diverse set of skills.

I think Monster Carrot what ifs are an interesting idea because he's a character that had a lot of potential, he was early enough to have a lot of impact if something changed with him, and he would be hilarious against later enemies. I could see Freiza thinking nothing of him and being rude...then being a carrot.

The wierd powers are one of the reasons i like jojo's bizarre adventures, its still a shounen about big muscular dudes punching each other but they all have wierd gimmicky powers making the fights less about how hard they can punch and more about how they can use their powers to counter the villains powers. I love DBZ but a lot of the time it feels like the fights are decided by having a bigger number than the opponent

Favorite weird powers in DragonBall history: Universe 2. I know it's a parody, and I appreciate it. He actually made them tough opponents yet sweet characters. And they gave me a reason to be impressed by 17 in this arc (up to that point). Interrupting a flashy transformation sequence? I always wanted someone to try that!

What I prefer are weird/interesting powers with serious strength to boot. And Goku somehow 'monkey see monkey do'ing those powers to an extent, mixing them with some of his own, and keeping up in a fun way through a cool battle. The latter didn't happen with him but I really like Goku Black's ki blade and scythe. And in the manga I love his ability to open portals and attack through them.

I don't think Majin Buu's powers were ever supposed to be wacky or unexpected. They were an extension of his childish character which was the way it was because we see him grow throughout the arc. I never thought they got old, but I love the buu arc (much more than the android saga which I really don't like). The internet seems to love when things are always taken seriously and I don't understand why.

Yeah Lauss is my favorite antagonist in Dragon Ball Heroes besides the Leader of the dark Empire; her unique ability to use magic glass and moves faster than Ultra Instinct Omen is pretty dangerous and effective and I wish she was used more!

I like that Magetta is often grouped as one of the U6 frontliners. For me his fight with Vegeta is when Super really kicked off as its own series, and it's hard having a non-major villain or race (saiyan, namekian, etc.) gain notoriety. Goes to show how clever use of wacky skills can go a long way.

Surprised you didn't mention Piccolo (both Sr and Jr) turning giant. Or regenerating limbs, for that matter, which was also a novelty at the time. I'd actually like to hear your thoughts about Piccolo turning giant and why he never used that in Z against Raditz or Nappa or Freeza. Or, like, literally everything that Tenshinhan does. Tenshinhan is the master of weird tricks and sadly for him they all get hijacked by the other characters. He never gets the credit he deserves for originating the Solar Flare or the multiform technique. The multiform technique is the ultimate in "useless but cool gimmick," but I swear if the Dragon Team had thought about it, they could've found uses for it. Especially outside of fighting. Think of how useful it could've been to leave one form somewhere while having another go on a trip to do something, even if they were both half-strength.

Weird powers for the underlings and serious for the big baddie. Weird powers make for a good obstacle, you have the Heroes having to figure out how to beat a tricky foe instead of just fight a foe that's on par with them (unless they need to be down quickly, then transformation easily outclass them).

Also, it's kinda weird for me how they think weird powers matter when the opponent can just vaporize them. I think that you have to be both strong _and_ have unique powers.

My favourite unconventional power was the evil growth explosion beam that the Devil used in the original Dragon Ball, not so much for it's actual use in the manga but the idea of it. The idea of an attack that latches into even the smallest bit of evil in a persons soul and makes it grow as energy until it explodes was pretty cool. In the manga all the Devil did was use it on Goku and have it fail because of Goku's pure heart but I remember one of the Budokai games brought it back for a what if scenario. In the scenario, Frieza and King Cold arrive a little earlier to Earth after Namek blew up than they did in the original story so none of the main Z fighters or Future Trunks had shown up yet to stop them. However the Devil had arrived and despite the ridiculous power gap between him and the two of them he had to fight them to save the Earth. You barely did any damage to them with your regular attacks and they could easily take massive chunks of your life bar away if they hit you, but the way to win was to use the evil beam and watch it near enough one shot them because they are some of the most evil characters in the entire series. I just like the idea that the Devil was clearly still outmatched in raw power level against them but he had the potential to still be a threat because his power uses the opponents evil against it. If I remember correctly if you used the beam on Goku in game it wouldn't do any damage unless he was in Super Saiyan and had anger in his heart, while if it was used on any of the big villains like Cell or Buu it would just nuke their healthbar.

The great ape transformation is jot usually controlled in the saiyan race Vegeta and Nappa were exceptions because they trained thoroughly to control it most other saiyans just used it to destroy a planet’s savagely and random

I prefer unique abilities rather than the usual fighting fanfare, but ultimately it all comes down to the Wrighting that would make the difference in of having a gimmick or a unique ability. If anyone is a huge fan of Warframe you know what I'm talking about.

Idk if you've touched on this before, but what do you think of different beam colors having different properties? I personally find that blue signifies blunt force, purple signifies piercing, yellow is fire/heat based, and green is corrosive/corruptive. The best examples I have are the Kamehameha, special beam cannon, heat dome attack, and that big ball explosion that broly does in DBS:B (sorry don't know the name of it). Would love to hear what you think!

That attack is hilarious in Dragon Ball Z Budokai Tenkaichi 3, it pretty much one-shot kills all villain characters but then with Goku and other good guys it doesn't do any damage.

I always found Dabura's Stone Spit ability just odd. Its had all the practicality of Monster Carrot, but also had a really weird narrative thread of having Piccolo and Krillin turning into stone to not participate in the Babidi Arc. Like....ok. They're stone, but doesn't that threat kinda become pedantic when Majin Vegeta turns to stone in his sacrifice against Buu? Why have the Stone Spit?

These are the ones I prefer because the battles aren't boring as a result. Seriously I can only take lasers and nondescript punching for so long before I get sick and tired of it and that was before the Freeza saga even finished. I say that the fighting standard is the gimmick not the other way around, a gimmick that has more than overstayed it's welcome. I would love for Glass girl to be given her proper due in an actually well written story which is unfortunately a high bar for dragon ball. As for monster Carrot, it is because of it's power that completely invalidates strength and is actually interesting in useful application. That wacky and unusualness provides a interesting hurdle to overcome, and monster Carrot's abilities provide an actual niche that will always be effective, especially for it's sleeper like qualities. So permanently fuse Baba, Bulma, and monster Carrot together. That way you have an interesting character with an interesting and ever relevant moveset. Seriously Dragon ball needs variety and lots of it. I wonder if glass girl could be a rival and possible fusion candidate for the Z fighter mermaid. Water and glass combined with Ki? Now that is a mesmerizing combination and an awfully difficult one to fight to boot.

Dub names. Dub names everywhere. Here's a what-if for you. What if Bulma never left Yamcha, but instead just cheated on him with her boytoy Vegeta to make Trunks? Vegeta never moved in to Capsule Corp., leaving Yamcha in the unfortunate position of Dale Gribble, as he raises Trunks (up to a point; I'm sure Veggie would kidnap Trunks to train him and stuff), unaware even after the boy becomes a Super Saiyan that he's not the actual father. Honestly, I like when the dragon Ball series gets a bit weird. I saw this being a huge fan of Western comic books, but when they are mostly just having martial arts fights with the occasional energy blast ki attack it's just a bit too close to superhero stuff. If I'm going to watch anime or read manga I tend to like something a bit different.

Both? If there was one thing the ToP got to show off was the unusual vs the usual in a spectacular display. Besides both belong in Dragonball and I think it needs to have the weird at least from time to time.
