Well this my take on things; 1) Kami was meant more as a moral teacher to guide its worl and its people and a moraly correct apth and the cultivate the worlds culture and power with rare interference, with the Devil a.k.a King piccolo or other such beings acting as that elimante of chaos and danger for a cetain level of civilisation to combat and over come sort of like a mini god of destruction for any stagnant civilisation. 1.5; It could be that each planets guardian takes on a different tone and cadance depending on the civilisation and their personal way of doing things. 2) The Compass kais I think were meant not just to be overseas but to cultivate and train mortals to possibly take over the position on the god of destructions when a candidate was required. 3) The Supreme Kai I believe was meant to choose or rather guide the galaxy on a certain path or direction, as for the four supreme kais maybe they put there as a test to see if having four of them could keep the universe balanced and not end up slacking so much in other aspects .e.g. martial arts, magic, technology and to prevent the supreme from going of the rails or to prevent the lowering of the universe mortal level.

I think its a god hierarchy. Every planet has a god, Directional kai's focus on parts of universes like governors, Supreme kai's and gods of destruction are incharge of the entire universe. And Zeno is just incharge of everything

When I first saw Kami I thought he was very mysterious and opened a new door for Dragonball which was set in the King Piccolo arc. But once the Frezia Arc began he became overshadowed by higher gods and beings such as King Kai. The last important role Kami played was in the Cell Arc where he fused with Piccolo. I wish we got more history about the Guardians of Earth!

I always thougth characters like kami, king kai, grand kai, and supreme kai could done so much more in the series. Kami was good example as he knew how t fight. I thought that after piccolo jr or some time before or after saiyans arrival that kami should made a wish to retain his yough. Alot people thought it was a selfish wish and go against anything kami stood for. But i always thought it would been opposite as he is the 'guardian' of the earth and his duty to protect it. While beings like red ribbon army he couldn't interefere in but people like piccolo, piccolo jr, garlic jr, saiyans, cells, etc all posed a threat to the earth. As guardian its his dutry to protect the earth and i believe since piccolo himself was much younger than kami that kami should least regain his youth and fight along side the other z fighters. Kami much like a lot of z chracters had potential but eventually just thrown aside. If you werent goky, vegeta, or a siyan then you were useless and pointless to the story, to me that was alot of bull, Its reason why like fanfics and what if scenrios that have the z fighters do more than just be side line characters. Zangya, Videl, & paur just to name a few that had potential. Yes zangya movie character but to me she had potential. Videl learned to fly and control her ki in least week or two which showe GREAT potential as no one ever learned that fast and she became a house wife. Paur...well shape shifting is awesome? Imagine if paur trained and pushed her shapeshifting beyond its limitations and even have guru unlock her/his potential. paur would become a good asset to the team.

I suspect Earth's guardians were instated by Shin's influence to keep watch on the world and make sure Majin Buu doesn't awaken. Maybe over time the latter purpose was more muddled though. When Kami considered Goku for the position, he might have believed he might be well equipped to beat Majin Buu. When Babidi showed his hand, Shin had to intervene directly.

I mean, that's the thing with relevancy in general though. Everything is relevant until it's not. Also, if a character is not relevant to a story after a certain point, what does it benefit the story to develop characters that are irrelevant. I think the real issue is making characters relevant to the story again, but to do that you have to deal with all the roadblocks written into the story over many years, plus you can't make all characters relevant all the time because the cast is too big for that and you end up with a plot that can't see the forest for the trees. I think a good way of doing it though would be side stories, much like the Yamcha side story rather than the main series.

Keep in mind, Kami was freakin' old! In the final arc of Dragon Ball, he attempted to retire and secede to Goku. By the time they brought Dende in, let's face it, he was a dragon ball battery. Given that Goku was offered the position of Guardian, a more active role is likely but it's represented occupants were unorthodox for such and deferred to, ironically enough given he turned down the role, Goku.

We should also keep in mind that when he was first introduced the previous and then soon to be main threat was someone his life was linked with so whether he wanted to or not he couldn't have stopped King Piccolo or Piccolo Jr. Literally every other incident that truly endangered the world since then was too much for Kami to deal with.

I think Kami may get a free pass when dealing with things from outside Earth. That’s why he could fight Piccolo, Garlic Jr in filler, and help train people for the arrival of the Saiyans. His actions dealing with Cell could also be considered taking action against something not native to Earth as Cell came from a different timeline.

Going along with the idea that King Kai appointed Kami... I wonder if it had something to do with Olibu, the blonde fighter from the Otherworld Tournament? Kai mentions how many of Earth’s heroic legends are based on Olibu, and the Dragonball Wiki says that Korin Tower was built as a monument to him, so that gives him an immediate connection with The Lookout. Maybe in Olibu’s time the world was filled with enough villains that King Kai had to appoint a Guardian after Olibu’s passing in order to have some sort of control over what was happening on Earth, since he couldn’t interfere directly.

Keep in mind also the lines from Vegeta about Earth having a check in station for the other world, assuming it's not just anime only. The way he said it implied that not every habited world did have one. Maybe Earth was some kind of regional capital in the bureaucracy for souls passing on, and it was part of Kami's job to help facilitate that function.

In terms of Kami as a person, he did have his use through the original db and the first half of dbz since not only did he create the items the anime is named after but prepared goku and the z warriors for various threats. However he was eventually rendered pointless once Cell beat piccolo and dende became the new guardian of earth. As for the position itself, on earth specifically, it's pretty much mute when you have an entire group of fighters who does your whole "guarding" part for you as evident by dende's lack of involvement once he became guardian

Super had shown us that Kami's Lookout was mobile. Rather than being the place the previous Kami resided perhaps the Lookout was made with Namekian tech. When Katas landed on earth he probably knew of how to build Namekian tech and designed the Lookout to be a cruiser of sorts. Something that can fly, but was never intended to leave the atmosphere. This home in the sky would have allowed him to avoid beings on the surface, for whatever reason. When he learned of Kami or perhaps when Kami approached him he was offered the position on the condition he purged any wickedness. When he split most of his memories were lost, some of which Piccolo Daimao might have retained in the design of his ship. When he became Kami the ship was moved above Korins Tower.

Idk man, I'm not feeling this argument. First off, Kami went to the tournament in disguise because the whole Demon King Piccolo thing had just happened and he was easy to be mistaken for Piccolo (even Goku thought we was Piccolo upon meeting him). Also, I get why you want to call him the "observer" rather than guardian but we can't forget that he is the one who guides the heros (lol goku, mostly) who he knows are more capable than he is to deal with world threatening events. For example: training Goku to fight Piccolo Jr and vouching for Goku to train under King Kai so that he could defeat the saiyans. He even gave up his life to merge with Piccolo in an effort to have literally any chance of the earth surviving the androids.. that's pretty guardian-like to me. Just sounds like you're getting a little caught up in the ever widening big picture and need to learn to respect the OG God of Dragon Ball my friend. 🐉

I think Kami played a bigger role in saving the world from its counterpart's fate (universe 6 earth) than one might think in the form of King Piccolo. We know that Vados said that humans wiped themselves out in universe 6, but over 200 years before the start of Dragon Ball humans came together to protect themselves from King Piccolo and his demonic progeny. Perhaps if King Piccolo had not existed to ravage the earth humans in universe 7 would have wiped themselves out as well. This may or may not be the case, but is something interesting to think about.

Overall, I think the concept of a planet having a Guardian was definitely scrapped in early Dragonball Z, but the status given to Kami for the Dragonballs wasn't undeserved. I think to make it relevant and not a lost thread, the point could've been made that in the Buu arc that the Guardianship was created by Shin to conceal the location of Majin Buu. The Guardians could've (unconsciously) maintained a seal that eventually deteriorated without a fully trained Guardian: Dende being raised without being fully trained by the previous Guardian or lack of a Guardian in the Alternate future.

Kami was a great guardian that did his job. He is enlightenment incarnate. He trained the guy who'd go on to beat a cyborg assassin, his evil half, and three saiyans. Kami did his job, he raised/enlightened Goku. Which led that enlightenment rubbing off on Picillo, and that's why Kami felt comfortable enough to fuse back. He knew that Earth had reliable guardian, Goku.

My head-cannon regarding the Kais and the Supreme Kais WAS that Kais ruled from the afterlife and handled matters that seemed to flood the afterlife with more guys. Supremes handled things from the side of the "living world". It was the only way I could reconsile what seemed to be redundant positions what with there being four compass direction kais for both ranks. Now well... I guess universe 7 had some weird system in place none of the other universes did? Did they just invent the roll of Grand Supreme Kai to handle a rather large influx of "Supreme Kais" showing up all at once? As far as that "non-interference, but guidance" thing, I'd have a lot more respect for it if they showed how on earth any Kami or Kai is supposed to "guide" when they can't interfere at all. Just show an example of a Kai or Kami doing what one of them is "supposed" to do.

It would be remiss of me not to remind you of the Namekian Year. Namekians age roughly 4x faster than humans, so Kami was 1200+ by the events of OG Dragonball. It answers why Piccolo Jr. gained an adult body in 3 years, he’s actually 12 by then. So by GT and Piccolo being ready to die... yeah, nearly 1500 years of memory and one would be ready for death, or “the next great adventure”.

I think it makes sense that each planet with life has a Kami, but earth is special because it has a Kami from Namek, so earth has Dragon Balls. It seems that having Shin, with four Kais to oversee sections of the galaxy, and each Kai oversees a Kami on each world is how Shin is able to act throughout the galaxy and tend to the life present without acting directly.

Well kami trained goku to new heights. He is part of the reason for piccolo existence, not to mention his ship came handy. He was the one to train the z fighters for the sayans arrival. And he merged with piccolo to fight the androids. He went from a God that wasn't that present to a guy that helped in any way he could. Even sacrificing himself.

Imo the ideas of mutli universes should have been galaxies instead, like huge galaxies separated by barriers only accessible by GODs and Angels. G.O.Ds in different galaxies, looking after their section of the universe and the multi universes should have been a huge thing to the point that it literally different universes with few parallels and maybe some of them are different timelines e.g Future Trunks timeline or the GT Timeline

now that you mentioned universe 6 and it's earth, i started to think about the wish that they made to make it like universe 7 earth. i would love to know if it meant that there is 1:1 copies of everyone from universe 7 earth, including the main cast from dragonball. or would it just be that earth was just restored back to the state of living and humans were just added at random, or the previous earthlings were put back there instead.

Boring filler aside, I’ll give respect to the Garlic Jr. saga for at least attempting to expand on the kami lore somewhat, having shown the spirits of past kami and whatnot. Also, I thought it was cool how Kami himself went to face off against Garlic Jr. in the first DBZ movie. I mean, at least he tried.

While I would like to have that filled in, I think Toriyama is unlikely to go back and fill it in. He's an accidental worldbuilder, not an intentional one, so we won't see guardian roles thrust into the limelight again since they're a lower power tier than the series is at now. A more subversive writer could have taken Dende and have him suddenly be extremely relevant to a new threat that Goku can't seem to lay a finger on because of something special about the guardian role that further reveals why other planets lost theirs and maybe why marketable characters Goku and Vegeta (along with Piccolo so the other two are free for the next arc) needs to train in a new art as guardians of the universe or something, but I think that ship kind of sailed with Morro. Any threat that could fill that role is going to feel like a rehash of Morro.

I have a possible theory that could explain why, he exists on Earth. It is going to be a tiny bit convoluted by explaining and stringing together filler with current story, so bear with me. So we understand that the universe has mortal levels, a concept introduced in super... Well consider this, back in the filler for dragon Ball z we had the grand Kai's tournament, where we had champions from hundreds of races across the Galaxy competing against each other. So what if your race produced enough heroes and/or pure souls to warrant being assigned a Kami. You have somebody like King Kai or his three similar counterparts picking a representative that can form them more pure souls. So in a way it can be an assigned role and is something that is considerable when determining a mortal level. this occurs to me because of the sheer number of planets Freiza had conquered, because then you must ask yourself where were their guardians? This leads me to believe that the vast majority of are assigned with only a few special cases a people stepping up to fill the role.

BTW, I am pretty sure our universe is universe 6 btw, and that is why the Earth in universe 6 is gone.The compass kais aren't important. That is why the are forgotten. Earth guardian is now pointless, so it doesn't need to be explained anymore.

Hey masako, did the kais create the suns and planets. If that’s the case then they surpass whis, since he specifically said he didn’t have the power to create a sun. I know in terms of lore whis would be more powerful, but by feats if the kais did create suns, then the kais are stronger. I don’t know just food for thought. This isn’t meant to be serious.

If you go by what we know, the answer is yes. Whis is an assistant, a supreme kai is suppose to create and preserve life. Creating suns and moons, should be childs play to them given that Shin can form matter dense and heavy enough to make a SSJ2 level Gohan struggle out of thin air. Then again this is my head cannon, due to Dragon Ball not giving the Kais the time of day.

I think all planets in the db universe have their own version of Guardian, it would differ from planet to planet of their role and structure. Similar to every country on our planet has their own form of Government to lead their country, they are differ from country to country on what structure they use.
