I trained all year for a Marathon on the Altra Via Olympus (310g). All indications were pointing to a 3:30:00 - 3:45:00 finishing time. I bought the Vanish Carbon (206g) for race day and took it out to break it in a few weeks prior. First run: PR 10K. Second Run: PR 5K. I finished the Marathon in 3:13:02.........Bottom line. I can confirm this is a super shoe.

I actually love the Nerdy-Hater-"I don't follow the herd" vibes of altras. To me, not only is it a flex to have the confidence of appearing superficially unremarkable, but as long as the gear is good enough technically (which it obviously is), it doesn't detract from your performance either. It's just a shoe. I get mine in black/gray. Also, I find the philosophy of not messing with the natural foot geometry is way easier to justify than the many of the gimmicks out there (as long as one doesn't need a specific feature for orthopaedic reasons, of course - no shame in that, we're all imperfect animals)

One thing that is going to limit the amount of people willing to try this shoe is that $240 price point. It puts it in that metaspeed sky, vaporfly, and alphafly conversation which is tough. If they could get to $200 or less I think they'd have a lot more success here.

Agreed! It will appeal to Altra devotee's mainly. I already have the Metaspeed Sky and frankly I'm sorry I spent the money. It's a great shoe but I think carbon plated racing shoes are not needed for slower runner's like me. From now on $160 is tops I will pay. That still leaves me with some great racers.
@MattRunsColorado2 жыл бұрын
@@TheChessPlayer1956 absolutely! They are fun if you have the extra funds but not needed. And I don't think the vanish will stand out among the other super shoes unless it's the people that are strictly altra faithful. Lower price point could have appealed the masses more.

Well. I guess I want a carbon racer now? Haha Rare to have such an all around positive review from you I think (that's a good thing!). I am keen for your 'after 100mi' review though. I like my altra lone peaks, but have been weary of the very consistent 'altras don't last long' type stuff I have seen across their range in reviews. Especially their road shoes seem to not be up to the wear, so I hope this is different - and that this is a sign of things to come. I love the altra mentality, which is unique, of offering zero drop and footshape 'natural' running shoes, while not being 'bUt MuH aNcEsToRs DiDn'T hAvE pAdDeD MiDsOlEs'. Aye, they also didn't run on tarmac and concrete. Altra seem to get that and blend modern tech into the 'natural' running mentality really well.

Hi there your shoe reviews are great and you are one that I trust for good info. I’m a former elite runner at Eastern Michigan U and also Nike employee and running store mgr. I think when it comes to carbon or other plated shoes a good comparison you could bring up is the approximate amount of seconds per mile that you feel certain shoes give. For example I think the Saucony endorphin speed gives about 10-15 seconds per mile - in other words I feel like I’m running 7:30 pace but am actually running 7:15 when I look at my watch.
@kofuzi2 жыл бұрын
it's an interesting idea, except some people are more attuned to their pace vs effort than others. and more experience in the same shoe at the same effort level can shrink the "efficiency gain" you describe, meaning the shoe will be apparently worse even though nothing about the shoe has changed
@JeffGraingeriSinatra2 жыл бұрын
Yes I agree what you’re saying, there’s a few variables in perceived effort to return. I just know when customers would ask me about the kind of return for certain carbon plated shoes that when I put it in terms of estimated seconds per mile improvement that it was an effective method for helping them understand. Thanks and looking forward to more of your great reviews!
@1980fack10252 жыл бұрын
Honestly that is way too subjective to be helpful in any way, shape, or form and people are going to react so differently to these shoes that it will not matter in the least how much a shoe may or may not work for Kofuzi because it will almost assuredly be different for you.

Update on my first review. I returned my size 10.5's and Altra gave me a full refund even though I had 20 miles on them. I ordered size 11 and they fit great. I did a 16 mile long run with some marathon pacing in them. I have never run in a shoe with a lot of stack height and wow is it nice. As I got deep into the miles my legs felt great with all that cushion. I am more of a mid-foot strike, but I still felt like the Vanish performed well. I still wish this shoe came in the Standard foot fit rather than the slim. I love my Torin's for this reason, but they just do not have enough stack height for those longer runs on tired legs. Kofuzi, do you plan on doing a future review after some miles?

FWIW I’ve had achilles issues when I ran exclusively in Altras, when I ran a fairly even mix of zero drop/positive heel, and since running almost exclusively in positive heel. I don’t doubt it can have an effect either way but I was hoping the lower leg stuff would decrease since moving away from zero drop and it hasn’t.
@johndonaghy478010 ай бұрын
Wearing zero drop shoes around the house (Lem’s Drifters) got rid of the constant soreness in my Achilles. The zero drop allows your Achilles to stretch as it should, rather than being constantly shortened by having a drop.

I am an Altra nerd, strictly for both ZeroDrop and FootShape. I have the Vanish Carbon, and it's only gone 150 miles, but the outsole is wearing through. I've reached the foam in a few spots, which is highly disappointing. Usually, I can take my Altras 600-800 miles before that starts becoming a concern. Hopefully the new Vanish Carbon 2 has a more durable rubber outsole.

Felt awesome when I put them on and walked around, felt like i was going to fly like super man haha. but I regret buying these.

since you got both the Carbon and the Tempo, what differences did you find between the two? which would you suggest for a 10k race and why? thanks!

@@EmanueleFischetti for a competitor I would suggest the carbons. But i am a middle of the pack runner, for me I like the tempo. But for personal use for my own times to PR I would use carbons just for chits and giggles

This is a $240 shoe. Is it underrated compared to the other shoes in the same price range?

I like Altra shoes, but unluckily my achilles tendons don’t.

as a person with 10+ altras, Altras in general just look ugly, and I'm not even talking about the foot shape. Altras have been very inconsistent between versions and models. So its hard for people to consistently use the brand. It's not durable or good looking enough for regular ppl and not fast enough for pros. These short comings keep the appeal of Altras to a small segment of the market. i train with Altras every once in awhile just for the zero drop mix into my rotation, but I'm racing with vaporflys.

Actually I hate Altra for coming in with several good ideas, and then dicking us around with unexplained changing of foot shapes in model updates, inconsistent sizing, and crazy stretchy materials that prevent a proper lock down, (not to mention hard tongues that bite into your foot). They had some good shoes, but it’s too late now, especially with these ridiculous unearned high prices.

Not sure why you think Altra is so unknown or overlooked. I know so many people who love Altra (or Topo as an Altra alternative). The features they have make the shoes very well loved among the runners I know. I think what might sink this shoe is the price. $240 is a lot for a shoe that is really untested and unknown is a lot. If it had come out when people hadn't already chosen their favorite super shoes they could have had a chance, but at this point most people are going to have to consider buying a pair of the shoes they like and having money left over or trying something unknown for one of the highest price points on the market right now.

I think perhaps you overestimate the name recognition of altra and underestimate how much people will pay for a racing shoe that works for them, especially if what is already out there isn't working

@@kofuzi I feel like much more of an outlier running in Saucony that I do when I put on Altras. I would say about 90-95% of the shoe advice I see people get is Hoka/Altra

Is this shoe reasonably priced?

in my opinion, the pricing is right

Great as it might be, 240.00 is way too much.

I think the pricing is right. $200 signals a second tier shoe. $275 signals that it should feel like a vapor fly, which this doesn't.

@@kofuzi Altra is not a first tier shoe yet. It's too expensive.
