You really surprised me with your choice. I was certain you will go with the Altra. I think you made the logical choice being a PB attempt. I had such a disappointing experience with the Altra Rivera that it killed the brand for me. The Pro 3 is amazing but not a top tier shoe. I find the Speed 2 more agile than the Pro3.. But again.. Vaporfly is the fastest shoe but for a marathon where time is secondary and enjoyment first I will take the Pro3. Wide and uber comfortable.
@OldManRunner

I tossed it back and forth and back and forth. If it was New York and I wanted to run really well and fast but not necessarily PB I would 100% take the Altra and see what happens. But because it is Berlin I am taking the gamble on the Sky+. Having said that I ran 2 marathons in the Sky so I have some related experience. The Altra is a super shoe and very difficult to leave behind...

Interesting note on Speed 2 vs Pro 3, have not seen this before. Have tried Speed 2 and consider that to be better for me than Speed 3. Will find Pro 3 and see if that holds. More stack and other changes in Speed 3 and Pro 3 could be the reasons. Thanks!!!

Coming here with a couple days of delay. I think you made the right choice. I think not only the shoe is lighter, but also the foam in Sky+ is more responsive and a few mm of drop will help you propel forward along with a pop from full length carbon plate. The only thing I don't like is the poor heel rubber coverage, as a result the exposed midsole gets trashed easily if you get tired and start heel striking. Durability aside I think it is a worthy shoe. I think it will bring good results for you.
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner 2 жыл бұрын
All my carbon plate shoes cut up at the rear. My Sky has 200k on them and the Edge has 100k and the Edge has cut up slightly worse. But they cut up early and then it seems to stop. I am planning to make a video of all of the wear on shoes...but a bit of extra rubber on the heel would really help, and would add very little weight

Would you consider adding a progression run to your marathon shoe test protocol? For you that might be something like 6:00/km for the first hour, then gradually dropping down to 5:30/km over the second hour.

That’s a good suggestion. Thanks. I’m planning to run for two hours on Sunday… will try this out. I might start a little quicker. I find it hard to run at 6:00/km unless I’m really tired, but will start and see how it pans out

Ah you kept us guessing to the last by wearing a mauve shirt 😂😂 Berlin is exactly a month away today… Are you feeling a bit nervous yet?? Practicing fueling ?? Maybe you’ve done so many marathons now none of that’s an issue !! My second ever marathon is mid-October and I’ve already been nervous for a month 😂😂 Just last night picked up a pain in the top of my foot 🤦🏻‍♀️ I’m in two minds whether to rest it or try pushing through gently … well I’m off to the gym so see how it feels with some weight training !! And I was doing so well too, feeling kinda invincible there on my 500km challenge, only 108 to go 🤷🏻‍♀️🤞🏻💪🏻

It's no surprise your foot is hurting...I turn to an indoor static bike when that happens...really works to keep some fitness but lessen the load on it. Best wishes with it! Berlin is sponsored by Maurten, which I have used in every marathon so far...and have had no GI issues. I have been rethinking how exactly I fuel and when, in part because Maurten will supply their drink mix along the route. Will get around to making a video about that...it is more complex than I thought...I hope to get a video out in 2 weeks about something I have been testing to help with all of that. I am not nervous about Berlin...but as it gets closer I will over think it as I always do and head out too fast...in that wonderful optimistic burst I always get...

I signed up for the Rob Burrows Leeds marathon today,it will be my first marathon. Iam 60 today and did my longest run of 16.58 km around a couple of reservoirs in the Peak District,half on trails. So I tried out my new Altra Mont Blanc,s. Seem to suit me,after a couple of early niggles,as my legs got used to zero drop. Feet and legs are great after. Other shoes(prime x,pro 2) worry me over long distance with stability. Got me thinking,should I be considering the vanish carbons for the marathon?
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner 2 жыл бұрын
Happy Birthday Alan! Congratulations...I am about three months behind you...If you can handle the zero drop you should definitely try the Vanish Carbon. It's been a wet few weeks, but I expect I will be out in mine when the weather dries up a bit. Very nice riding shoe and one of my favourites

@@OldManRunner To be honest,iam getting more concerned about the impact on the knees and hips with long hours of running. They say the zero drop shoes make the muscles(calf's),take the load as opposed the joints. It's significant that I ran for 3 months with no issues,then got a knee injury,the first time I ran in the Prime X?
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner Жыл бұрын
I rotate shoes all the time across the stack and drop heights. This seems to work well for me. If I have a hint of knee trouble I run in the Nike Invincible Flyknit 2 (the Flyknit 1 is practically identical) and these give my knees a break. I did this last Sunday for my 18k run. I also jump on an indoor bicycle if I need to keep exercising without pressure on the knees, which I will do at lunchtime today.
@alanrobinson2229
@alanrobinson2229 Жыл бұрын
@@OldManRunner interesting,the invincible run has 9mm drop,which is high, considering that zero drop is supposedly the ideal for joint protection? A heel strike squishness in the invincible can reduce this in reality,but still high drop.
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner Жыл бұрын
@@alanrobinson2229 I don’t know that zero drop offers maximum protection. I think I went into it in some detail in the Vanish Carbon review. The Vanish Carbon has zero drop but has a reasonable stack of foam. The Invincible has a lot of soft foam that lessens the impact. It has been great for my knees. I’ve ramped up training and the knees are giving me a little grief so I will be in the Invincible’s again for my Sunday long run…

Hello! Do you think is Worth buying the metaspeed sky+ with 50% discount, for 10k training sessions? I never ran in a full plated carbon shoe!
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner Жыл бұрын
Hello Luis. A Metaspeed Sky+ with 50% discount is something I would buy. At the moment it is my marathon shoe of choice. Like most of my carbon plated shoes it wears down quickly. So I would use it for Race, Stride, Tempo and Interval sessions but not on long or easy day runs, in order to get the best value out of it. Typically I use my fastest carbon plate shoes in marathons and testing, but end up with more shoes than I can race in. This week I did intervals in my Metaspeed Edge and Intervals in my Saucony Endorphin Pro 3's...It's really worth trying the Sky+ and at that price, I would not hesitate.

As you have made your choice for Berlin , does that mean you will be using the Altra's for the Virtual NY marathon? or will you save the EVA outsole for a future actual race? It has been a great watch, thanks as always.
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner 2 жыл бұрын
I have been wondering about the exact same question. Someone, I thought it was you, had challenged me to do a low tech old fashioned marathon...and it has intrigued me and I have been ruminating on it ever since...and the Virtual NY might be the perfect opportunity. I was thinking about running the middle of Ireland marathon again because I know it is one marathon in length and I know the start and end points. So I start the watch / watches but have them covered up and I run until I get to the end without knowing how fast I am going...drinking fizzy coke or some such 80's superfood along the way whenever I feel like it. I thought I might get a pair of the Nike waffle shoes that they are remaking or maybe the Huarache like I used to run in the 80's...or try and see what vintage stuff I can get online...it's not time critical and I can stop and walk if I feel like it...and then figure out another marathon for the Vanish Carbon...

How accurate do you find the watch prediction in general?
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner 2 жыл бұрын
In short, not very. But that could be down to me underperforming in the marathon.The Garmin FR955 has a race predictor for various distances. I check it every day. On July 1st it said that I would run a marathon in 4:12:33 and a 5k in 21:49. I know I am faster than both of those. As the weeks went by, the watch got used to me and training has increased the numbers have been going down. Today they are 3:47:30 and 21:54. I know I can run 21:54 for the 5k. The marathon time is five minutes faster than my PB To complicate matters you can also put in a proposed race, in my case the Berlin Marathon. I think the figures above are what the watch thinks you are capable of running on the day it states them. For Berlin which is 4 weeks away the watch is saying I will run in 3:41:36. I would love that to run that fast, but I don't think I will....I will report back!

@@OldManRunner Your predictions might be more accurate than mine. At least you are achieving the 5k. I have FR 645 which is an older watch, and I am not sure if it is running exactly the same prediction algorithm. My watch predicts 21:43 5K, 3:27 Marathon for me. Both of them are faster than my current PBs. My last official 5k race (Nov 2021) was 23:33 and my last marathon (Jan 2022) was 3:49:54. I would be thrilled to run a 3:27 marathon which would be a BQ for me. For the next training cycle, I will initially aim (very ambitiously) 3:35 but depending on the progress I might have to switch to 3:40 or 3:45 goal. I know you also have a STRYD pod. What is your stride pod predicting. Again, a video on this might be interesting before your race.
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner 2 жыл бұрын
@@TolunayOrkun The funny thing about the watch predictions is that they make me feel that I am not putting the effort in on the marathon as I cant get near the predicted time. Though I can on the 5k...The Stryd is predicting 03:35:12, which I wont do. It predicted that I would do 03:46:25 in Zurich and I was about 10 minutes slower. It is predicting 279W which is higher than it predicted for the last number of marathons. I feel good so that is positive, but will probably mean I go out too fast again! I will do a video at some stage, for the moment I am worried about tempting fate...

Barry, from memory you had the original Sky and Edge. How does the Sky+ compare to first Sky? I believe you haven't physically tried Edge+ but is it your impression that based, on stack height and plate placement - it is closer to original Sky? So Edge+ and Sky are more similar to each other than Sky+ to Sky?
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner 2 жыл бұрын
Yes. I have both originals. I was going to mention this in the video but it was just dragging it out. I wanted to test the new Edge+ but I didn't have the time (energy?) to fit another shoe into these tests. I considered ordering a pair, quick testing them and sending them back to Asics but I didn't want to add to the discarded shoe mountain. Asics have a store in Dublin. I thought I would ask to try on an Edge+ on just to see how it feels and maybe measure it. So I went in earlier this week. I asked to why there were no Edge+ shoes on view in the Men's section, despite there being three Sky+'s...They told me that they had to send back the previous version because nobody bought them and they didn't get the new version...I have a lot of other videos planned so I might not get around to testing the Edge+...much as I would like to. The Edge is a great shoe and imagine the Edge+ is even better...

Edge didn't feel like a super shoe to me.. just a slight upgrade on the Metaracer. Not enough foam. As some research suggests 75%ish of the gain comes from the foam then that would be my thoughts on why people prefer the Sky.. and Saucony pro3 Vs Pro1/2
@OldManRunner
@OldManRunner 2 жыл бұрын
@@lifephorce I think you are right about the foam being a decider for people in the two shoes.
