I finally got a Krag again. It is a Norwegian civilian Marksmanship Association (DFS) rifle that has been bult on a M1904 Krag Jørgensen Engineeer Carbine reciever. And given a heavy match barrel and a custom stock. This is the setup that was used in the final years of the Krag as the mainstay of Norwegian civilian marksmanship shooting, before it was replaced by the Sauer 200STR. The Krag was famous for the Stang competition shooting. (search for that folks) where marksmen put up to 30 shots on the target in 2x25 seconds, including reloading that internal magazine!

The Krag Jørgensen m/94 action manage high pressure. The "problem" is fatique. Few knew about fatique at the time Krag designed the action. As a check in production, all actions were shot with 5 rounds. Procedure was first round 46-50000 psi, second 58.000psi, third 65000psi, fourth 72500psi. Last back to 46000. Some were additionally shot 40 rounds @58.000psi. Thru the years we have experienced this fatique issue, and now the norm is approx 40000 psi. At that pressure they last for ever.

A great video thank you. I think I'm right in saying that Krag's were still in use in Scandinavia at the outbreak of WW2. I remember seeing one advertised that had been converted to a .22 training rifle but had a Nazi stamp on it which shows that it was a captured item I believe. Incidentally, my wife's Grandfather was in the British force dispatched to Norway in 1940 against the German invasion; an operation which didn't go well at all. However, he also had the pleasure of deployment to Norway to assist in the surrender of German units in 1945. He played in a football match against Norwegian soldiers and won and each British player was presented with a prize; a Nazi dagger from which the swastika and eagle had been ground!

@@jonathanmays2600 Thank you for sharing that information. For myself, I wasn't aware that the 30-03 was referred to as the 30 US so that is something that I will most certainly be aware of when I am looking at those firearms in the future. As to caliber misinformation I think that one of the greatest offenders is the M1 Garand. People buy them and know that it is chambered for the 30-06 Springfield unless otherwise specified. That information is correct, but it is also incomplete. The M1 Garand requires (unless it has been modified) 30-06 Springfield ammo that is designed specially for it otherwise the op-rod will be permanently damaged in only a few shots. The problem is that enough people buy that gun, don't research what 30-06 loads are safe for it because they assume it is chambered for the 30-06 Springfield, and then have an extremely bad day when the op-rod is damaged. That is why when it comes to caliber and ammunition of a firearm I have to be 100% certain it is correct before I shoot a gun. If I have any doubts I talk with my gunsmith and find appropriate research materials to ensure safe operation.

You are welcome and the trilogy by Edmund Morris on Theodore Roosevelt is also excellent. His hunting exploits after the loss of both his mother and first wife is just a bloodbath. With regard to finding the carbine that is going to be tough no matter how many were produced. This is because one of the reasons I want that particular firearm is the same reason why others do to, and that is because the Rough Riders carried it with them into battle. As to the 1895 Winchester I just find them to be an elegant rifle with an innovative action. If you ever get a chance to go to Theodore Roosevelt National Park they have some of his Model 1895's in 405 win on display. I love that euphemism of "time machine" when referring to such firearms as the Krag, the Trapdoor, and the 1895 Winchester that went to war side by side against the Spanish Mauser.

Another neat detail is the switch on the left side of the reciever that you can switch to an upright position and block the magazine so the bolt doesn't pick up rounds. Then you can load single rounds if you have the time, and have five rounds ready for when you get really busy. I think it was a design to conserve ammo and take good aim with your single shot instead. The rear sights on these went up to 2200 meters (2200+ yards) The idea was not that you would hit accurately at that range, but rather that a whole company could saturate an area with fire. That being said, the rifle is so accurate that hitting a man size target is doable so long as you can see the target in your sights. Around 600 meters shouldn't be a problem for a skilled marksman. The rifle was used in the fighting during the nazi invasion of Norway in 1940. The germans had problems with the Norwegians taking them out when they were out of range from their K98. This occured in the mountains around Narvik where the open terrain favored the Norwegians, some of whom were avid sealhunters..

Hi! Great video as always. You have by far the best and most underrated gun video channel on KZbin. In Norway there are hundred thousands Krags around. It was the no. 1 target rifle for many years, until the Sauer took over. Unfortunately they are not perceived as useful anymore, e.g. as hunting rifle conversions, not because of pressure limitations, but because a combintion of wet chamber (e.g. due to rain or oil) and only one locking lug, caused the point of impact to change from zero. This effect is not as significant as many people believe, but nonetheless, it had made the Krag unpopular. There is one gunsmith who makes beautiful custom Krags, so luckily someone still choses to take care of them. Google Rafdal Våpen to see them.

Hello Sondre - thank you for your supportive words! The Krag is not quite the way it seems. Years ago, when I was young and foolish I tried to blow one up. They were only $49.00 at the time. The chamber was 6.5x55. I finally used Bullseye to the case mouth. The barrel blew apart just forward of the front receiver ring - the action didn't move. I had no money for instruments to measure pressure - but it must have been approaching 100,000 psi. I think that is a strong action - or at least that one was. From all the letters I've received over a long time - you have a truly great country. I hope the people are able to keep it that way. All the best to you.

It's important to note that the Norwegian 6.5 loading is much lower pressure than the Swedish. Army tests found that the higher pressure Swedish ammo could be safely used in an emergency. Nevertheless, anyone with a Norwegian krag would be advised to shoot milder handloads if he intended to shoot it regularly. Gregory Peck used a Krag-Jorgensen (K-J) "sporter" to kill a rabid dog in the movie "To Kill a Mockingbird." My neighbor when I was a kid had one, and his 3 sons shot their first deer with it. Over 25 years ago I stopped at a country gun store that had a used K-J sporter with a full length or Mannlicher stock. A few days later I stopped at a local gun shop, and told the dealer about it. He said, "Wait here a minute." He went to the back room, opened his safe, and walked back out with a beautiful K-J sporter with a Mannlicher stock. He had it custom made for himself, and it was NOT for sale, even though I wanted it. Several years ago I bought the book, SHOTS at WHITETAILS by Larry Koller, and learned that his favorite rifle was a K-J that he sporterized and furnished with a Mannlicher stock that he made for it. Apparently the K-J and the Mannlicher style of stock go well together. Thanks for bringing back memories!

FYI you should never hunt or carry as suggested with a live round and uncocked bolt or hammer. The firing pin is loose in this position and the impulse from dropping the gun on its butt against something hard can set off the round. The exception is a lever gun with a half-cocked safety. Maybe this particular action is an exception as well, but in general this is a dangerous thing to do with bolt actions.
@UnitedStatesOfGuns5 жыл бұрын
Hi Richard - excellent advice - no accidents is paramount.
@russellmiller2125 жыл бұрын
Just a courtesy note to prevent those who may misinterpret the logic of holding the trigger to the rear while closing the bolt on bolt action rifles against a chambered cartridge. There should never be a cartridge chambered on this instance. This is applicable to bolt action rifles which cock on opening. Also, there are only a few (i.e. Enfield, Swedish, Krag '03A3) actions which offer the option to manually pull the hammer to the rear like a lever action. Never do so with a round in the chamber...If there is a desire to leave a cartridge chambered for the duration of a hunt, load and cautiously lower the hammer while holding the trigger to the rear. I failed to mention that in this case as well there also shouldn't be a cartridge chambered.

Quick question: Krag rifles are often considered a pretty ingenious design that held up even in the wake of stripper clip charged rifles. It is reliable, and used rimless cartridges. However, it receives a lot of scrutiny for its supposedly weak action. If it had duel locking lugs, do you think we would be seeing more of these rifles around?
@UnitedStatesOfGuns6 жыл бұрын
Hello Aiden - I think they settled on the optimal design. Another lug might have made a difference but failures were extremely rare. Rather than the one lug, it was probably the overall design that ultimately resulted in other designs superseding the Krag.

I used to close the bolt the same way for storage but with a round in it puts all the pressure on the primmer so if you bump the stock down wile climbing it goes Boom.So for storage yes hunting NONONO badbadbad try with junk mod 700 put a round in and pull the trigger and put the bolt down now the pin is denting the primer drop on the ground and it will go boom almost every time if hit hard or primers are soft. Its a bad habit i learned the hard way in Kodiak a brown bear sow with 3 cubs all over 9 feet was huffing at me and earlier from muscle memory i had put the bolt down wile trigger was pulled it dented the primmer you can feel this happen now the primmer can fail Im glad it was a warning shot and not a life and death shot because it failed from the dent. So now I don't not even for storage I did this to my hole life but hear you say with a round in no good . JUST FOR SAFETY i had to say somthing

Hi Mike, Wonderful post - thanks for writing. Safety is the most important thing. Hopefully no one puts a cartridge in the chamber and closes the bolt unless they are ready to shoot. All the best and thanks again.
