As a retired train driver i am still amazed at the stupidity of people who think they can beat the train. I know, that driving a four carriage train at 60 mph in perfect conditions, it still takes a quarter mile to stop. How do people think that waving a handkerchief at a train from twenty feet, that there is a hope in hell, it has a chance to stop. So why do so many people get stuck on tracks?, is it because they couldn't be bothered to check the suitability of their route?

Most truck drivers in the United States are not local to the area they are driving in. They can be from the next town, next county, or even a few states away, and many of them rely on GPS to find their way around. Sadly, GPS is not smart enough to know about traffic hazards and will direct trucks onto roads that they really shouldn't be on. I will say the driver should be able to look at the crossing and go "Yeah, I don't think I can make that." and try another route.

There's been an instance that I know of in Australia where calling the railroad operators didn't actually stop the train. There was an accident on the Kings Road Salisbury Downs South Australia Crossing one night. South Australia Police in their wise wisdom rang Adelaide train control to stop the trains. Adelaide train control confirmed that all trains had stopped for the night, given they stop the Adelaide - Gawler trains at anything between 9pm-12am depending on the day. As a result of this, SA Police believed it was safe to park Police Car ON railway line... WRONG! There's 3 rail tracks crossing Kings Road at the exact same place - two belong to Adelaide Train control... the 3rd at the time belonged to Commonwealth railways Australian National. My Dad WAS the train driver and came barrelling around the corner just out of Dry Creek and WHACK! South Australia Police LOST one Police Car that night. Complete write-off as the AN freight train smacked it doing close to 120km/h. Luckily, no one was hurt. just a few officers and ambos shaken by what they witnessed. They rang Adelaide, yes - but no one thought to ring Australian National. 😬 Several years later on the exact same rail line further up the line was the infamous Ghan vs Bus vs Car vs Pedestrians up at the Park Tce Salisbury rail crossing - bus was stuck over crossing due to the run of several traffic lights being out of sync with each other. 4 dead including bus driver.

Most of these accidents are caused by common sense people not having it! All railroad crossings have one 800 numbers and then you call them if you get stuck on the rail line that way they contact the train to stop it way before it even hit you! You have to also remember that if it’s a passenger train, and you cause a derailment and people die in it, you can actually be charged with manslaughter! Like that one first story or the loader on the trailer got hit did you notice the train cars those were oil imagine if they would’ve derailed the environmental disaster that would’ve happened the possible fire and destruction that could’ve happened not to mention the $250,000 loader that was destroyed! I can guarantee that driver does not have a job with that company anymore!

Also, if you noticed the large hump in certain rail crossings, you don’t take a semi over those landing legs will get caught or if you got a low boy trailer it’ll get hung up! It usually takes common sense to know that you can’t go over an area like that I have over 30 years of truck driving experience. I’ve never had to go over a railroad crossing like that and if my routing would send me that way I would look for an alternate. Cause like I said, there’s 800 numbers on the crossings that you can use your cell phone call him up and tell him you’re stuck. That way they can contact the train and stop it like the Amtrak that hit that semi now if that train would’ve derailed that driver could’ve been charged with manslaughter if people would’ve been killed in that crash but thank goodness it didn’t derail!

The employees moved everyone out of the rear cars because the conductor was afraid that the rear cars had derailed. I asked a porter what had happened and he said, "some guy was fishing off of the tiny train bridge that went over the creek with his little girl (literally about 6' long that had signs ALL over it that said, "ABSOLUTELY NO FISHING and NO TRESPASSING") and we had to slam on the brakes at 70 MPH". @Bigfoot-px9gj8 ай бұрын
On #5 you said it would cost $1M to fix the elevated roadway. Sorry, but that is not accurate. Truckers usually know where railroad crossings are that they can't cross. You don't need to change the crossing, the highway department can change (or add some) warning signs well in advance of where the crossing is. The reason for that is you can't always turn a semi truck and trailer around just anywhere. Say for example, the highway that the railroad crossing is on should have a large, easy to read sign warning truckers that semi trucks are not permitted on the highway. Those signs cost about $40 to $50 per square foot to make and usually less than a few hundred dollars for installation. When you add all that up, the total is far less than $1M. If a truckers gets stuck on a railroad crossing, it's usually because they are not paying attention to warning signs on the highway.
@keystonedriving81807 ай бұрын
You are assuming that the truck drivers will take note of the signs. The number of trucks which hit clearly marked low bridges suggests that there are a significant number who believe that they know better than the people who put the signs up. It's difficult to fix stupid.

I don’t know the rules in the UK. But that was some major cutting corners. Considering in the US a yellow/red flag should have been place 2 miles in advance of the work sight. Plus. Form B should have been issued in advance. Both letting the train crew of there presence and to let the crew know to call in advance for permission to enter the track gangs work zone.

On august 11th 2011, somewhere in russia there was a collision due to failed brakes and a red signal, and the locomotive that hit the other train from the back turned into nothing but scrap metal. Also the locomotive from the back was VL10-336 according to google. (I like your content tbh)

My ears pricked at "San Antonio" - I thought you'd found footage of my train running over a stranded tractor trailer this past April. Nope: same route, similar accident, 4 years earlier! Poor old Texas Eagle. It was 10 hours late getting down to us in San Antonio, but I'll still take train travel over flying. FYI: By the time the engineer of a train sees an obsrruction across the tracks, it's usually too late to stop. Trains just have too much momentum.

What? Were the Nottingham rail crew all deaf? I mean, that horn is pretty hard to ignore!

How would the "conductor" slow down when the engineer is operating the train?
@Talldarkhandsom6 ай бұрын
Emergency brakes
@mynorthshoreАй бұрын
@@Talldarkhandsom You really missed the point of my comment. The conductor doesn't operate the train at all. Only the engineer. Even if the emergency brake was used it just completely sets the brakes tight.

"He didn't know the tracks were too high for his truck" Whaaa? You can see that the crossing is humped. This trucker is still accountable for the incident.

I was traveling on Amtrak once, behind a freight train that hit an automobile. All traffic on the line halted. Aside from the injured car driver who had to be carted away, it was also compulsory, we were told, that the uninjured freight train crew had to be replaced, before its run could continue.

I was on an Amtrak that hit a teenager trying to get a go-cart off the tracks. We could hear and feel the accident. It took half a mile for the train to stop. The boy died and it was quite possibly one of the worse experiences of my life.

Uhhh, the train engineer can't tell WHO is on the tracks until it is too late, so it does not matter if it ends up being a police officer or somebody else, the engineer will react in the same way. The officer should have immediately called the "in case of emergency' phone number for the train dispatcher (they should already know this, but it is usually posted by the crossing anyway) and calling it in is probably the fastest way to advise the engineer of the problem.

Old saying on the Railroad is once the train crew sees you it's already too late

On February 26th, 2019, the Long Island Railroad (made up of both electric and diesel trains) saw one of its worst grade crossing accidents in its 190-year history. Three people involved in a hit-n-run sped South towards the School Street crossing about 900 feet East of Westbury's station, with lights flashing and gates down in their pickup truck. They went around the gates and were hit by an Eastbound train from Penn Station to Hicksville at 50 mph that just pulled out of Westbury, but as that train hit the pickup, a Westbound express from Ronkonkoma to Penn Station struck the pickup at the LIRR’s MAS (Maximum Authorized Speed) of 80 mph in unison. The Westbound's front two cars derailed and smashed into Westbury's WB platform which perforated M7 car #7425! The damage to the platform saw the 12-car long platform shortened to 10-cars long. The line was in the middle of having all the crossings eliminated with the roads now going under the tracks. In November 2020, the crossing was eliminated with trains now going over the road on a trestle and the road going under the tracks.

Several crossings in Australia were fairly recently eliminated by raising the railway lines onto concrete pylons. Several stations have been moved to pylons too, to match the height of the rails. The stated reason for doing this was the disruption caused to rush hour traffic by the vehicles having to stop for trains at level crossings. I think that safety was tacked on to that reason, too.

A lot of these trucks getting stuck on train track crossings seem to be due to airbags deflating on a single axel, lowering the clearance needed to clear the vehicle over the tracks. 😮😮😮😮😮

9:16 Workers probably assumed the train was on the rightrack. Thearby level crossing signals would have allerted the workers to an approaching train long before the locomotive driver saw them.

As a real trailer driver, I was always aware of the height and the clearance of the car carrier chassis to the road.
