Delivering a baby is a lot easier on the new mom than lying flat on a b d with your feet in stirrups. The bed and stirrup practice was started for the ease of the doctor when birthing babies became common practice. The concept of a birthing chair was practiced for hundreds of years. It's much more comfortable for mom and the actual birth is assisted by gravity, it makes it easier on mom, too. A midwife was the baby catcher so to speak.

With both of my pregnancies, I wanted so badly to walk and lean over the bed, but they wouldn't let me get up. I wound up getting an epidural with both deliveries. I was young and just thought, "They are the doctors/nurses, so they know best " I think if they had let me do what I felt was natural, I wouldn't have had to have the epi. Now that I'm older, I question everything the medical professionals tell me, including the charges of procedures. It may seem rude to some, but I consider it looking out for myself physically and financially.
