+Samantha Smith I think UPB routines became dull after giants became the rage, at least for a while. There is a bit of innovation still going on and I think it's interesting the contrast between number 2, Ma Yahong, who could still 'wrap' around the low bar AND do giants, and number 1, which was a brilliant display and 'different' enough to be amazing.

1:45 damn why don't gymnasts ever do skills like that anymore, all the modern UB routines just look like copy-pastes of each other. I don't think I have ever seen the Counter-Kim in the Olympics (Apart from Kim in 1992) - if only Kim had kept her dismount from the 1991 Worlds and used it at the Olympics EF, she probably would've gotten a 10 and won the Uneven Bars gold. Fun Fact: Kim Gwang-Suk's Perfect 10 at the 1991 Worlds was the last perfect 10 ever given out at the World Championships.

I’m not sure where you got the information from. I think that’s a German giant? They’re not banned, not many people do them anymore. Counter Kim is also not banned. You can’t connect it to other skills easily, so people rarely perform it. Something like Mo Salto also suffers from the same fate, but they’re not banned
@lampwick4427

@@Clip_Craze14 Monica Phelps (who commentates during that exercise) incorrectly labels the Li li 2 as a german giant into a tkatchev. The Li Li 2 is a german giant into a straddle cut, as it's pretty much impossible to get the required power to do a tkatchev out of a german giant. When Ivana Hong did the Li li 2 at 2007 worlds, the d score judge incorrectly thought it was a german giant into tkatchev and so the e score judges then hit her with some major amplitude deductions (I think .3 for severe lack of amplitude). This was back in 2007 when judging was a lot more lenient so a routine that loses .3 to one element is very quickly going to have that element removed. I think that her bars mishap (entirely not her fault btw) also screwed her out of a position on the 2008 Olympic team, as she was a competent AA gymnast otherwise.

first: the bars are set much further apart nowadays, allowing the gymnasts to swing. This makes it much too far to do such transfers.. it's a shame indeed. I don't know exactly when they officially changed the heights and distances, but the gymnasts wanted to do skills more like the men on the high bar. Also the girls were allowed to compete at a much younger age (now only from 16). The turns on the pelvis are indeed painful, and much other elements have been banned like the skill at 1:00

These are the video creator's favorites, not what are considered the best. MostepanovaFan also included honorable mentions with athletes competing in post 2000 quads. This video has been posted in 2009 before Simone Biles even debuted as an elite gymnast. Get over yourself.

lokienvy Maybe next time when expressing your opinion be a little kinder . I was not hating on Simone, in fact I think she is very good gymnast. I was simply expressing my opinion on the 2000s gymnasts. In my opinion the gymnasts in the 80s and 90s were a little better then modern day gymnasts. Your are entitled to your opinion but that doesn't mean you can say rude things "Like get over yourself". How was I even full of myself?! Anyway, about the Honorable mentions, I am sorry I forgot about those.

Yes, she was underage. She was about 12 here. A fabulous gymnast who could have achieved so much (great on beam too) but they got suspicious of her and she was underscored at the 92 Olympics. North Korea entered her age as 15 for 3 years in a row. They got a ban for this. They did it again a few years back and got another ban, which will be lifted next month. Kim Gwang Suk's routine is so amazing because of the release skill- it's named after her, and only one other girl has done it since.

I think you mean 60's? In the 80's they did double doubles, full twisting double pikes, double fronts, full twisting double layouts, double layouts, triple fulls, double arabian punchfronts, double full in back out (which has NEVER been done since) and double layout punchfronts! And all on a shittier floor than they have now. Go and look at the likes of Voinea, Silivas, Groshkova and Tuzhikova for some 'super easy' tumbling. The easiest is a double tuck STILL in routines today.

Thanks for explaining! The banned skill is the Korbut flip, right? I'm a huge gymnastics fan, but I don't know the names of everything. And if the bars are set further apart so they can swing, how did these gymnasts manage to do it? I've taken some adult gymnastics classes, and I can't even pull myself up on the low bar yet. I never realized how springy they are, so handstands amaze me! Of course, I'm not 16 years old and 80 pounds. :)
