This is the BEST tutorial for the underarms I have seen on YT. I’ve tried others where two stitches are picked up on each side then twisted and knitted together and it still left me with holes. This is so simple, easily explained and straight forward, and I didn’t even have to weave in the back it worked 100% for me so thank you very much!

Natasha Childers do you have an easy tutorial for changing yarn in the middle of a row and weaving in the ends? I ask because the garment you’ve knitted has fairisle and although I’ve never attempted fairisle I’m interested in learning how to change the yarn while weaving in the ends. My problem is changing the yarn in the round.
@mostlyknitting4 жыл бұрын
@@cloudydaez I haven't done a tutorial on this but I am happy to do one. It is probably simpler than you might be expecting. I usually just change the yarn on the side of the garment and weave in the ends on the wrong side in a way that they are unlikely to show or to pop out. I will definitely do a video for clarity. Thank you for the suggestion. :)
@cloudydaez4 жыл бұрын
Natasha Childers thank you. I normally tie the strands and weave in after the project is finished but recently I followed a tutorial weaving the strands in the round going in opposite directions but every time I come back to the next round to weave in that last strand 6 -7 stitches before where the yarns have been joined I’m left with an ugly stitch on the front of the work and I can’t for the life of me see what I’m doing wrong. I would be so grateful 😊

Thank you, that was very clear and does a much better job than any other tutorials I have followed. I was interested that you expect to have to weave in and tighten the gaps. Whenever I’ve done that I’d thought I’d failed in my initial job of eliminating them as I picked up. It was so nice to see that this is a conscious decision with the benefit of strengthening the gusset.

Ugh, THANK YOU. I'm knitting my first sweater, and I had so many questions about the arms. Am I picking up these stitches correctly? Kinda. Why is this big hole here? It does that. Did I mess it up? No, it just does that? Can I make it stop? Yes. My second sleeve looks so pretty! My first sleeve, well, let's hope it's not too obvious where I use my tails to close up my armpit holes. the best!! can you talk more about the second yard, it looks very thin. Can you use the same thick yarn as well instead of a thinner yarn that would be a perfect color match, but not so available.....
@mostlyknitting3 жыл бұрын
Thank you. I am glad you found the tutorial helpful. I am a little unsure what you mean in your question. To make the sweater, I used a sportweight yarn and a laceweight yarn held together. The pattern was written for a DK weight yarn so this allowed me to achieve the right gauge for the sweater as well as gave a bit of a soft halo which is the look i was going for. For me, two of the same sport weight yarn held together would be too think to get a gauge of DK weight but if i held two fingering weight yarns, i would get close to the DK gauge I was after. I hope that answers your question.

I’m a novice knitter, trying to prepare for my next project. I loved your concise explanations. One question - why use a long “round”needle for the magic loop rather than just a short “round” needle, suitable for a sleeve? Many thanks!
@mostlyknitting8 ай бұрын
Thank you so much Anne. I am so glad you found the video helpful. I use a long needle to magic loop as i find with the short needle, eventually i have too many stitches to get around the circumference comfortably. For some sweaters, you could get away with a 16" length to start with if the circumference of the sleeve is large enough. But for most of my sweaters, the circumference is too small and I have to magic loop. Hope that makes sense. :)

Thanks for a great tutorial it made sense finally😊 Is there a way to know what your decreases should be left leaning or right ? I’m still learning and on the sleeve I am still unsure if not following pattern.
@mostlyknitting7 ай бұрын
Thank you for your kind words. There is a bit of a rule of thumb with decreases. At the start of the round, you usually do K1, K2 tog (right leaning) and then at the end, knit to 3 sts before the end of round and do SSK, K1 - left leaning. Hope that helps. :)

Wonderfully clear visual on how to do this. Question, how does one get the underarm large enough so there's no pulling when the arms move whilst wearing the garment? I've followed patterns making cardigans and sweaters and while the body fits and sleeves there's always something off on the underarms, like there's not enough material/ not enough cast on stitches in the pattern.

If the sizing for the width of body and sleeves is right, it sounds like the armscye is not long enough (length from your shoulder to the underarm). This may be as a result of the row gauge not matching (or that part of your body might just be a bit longer). If the sweater is constructed top-down, you can transfer the stitches to a long cable and try it on before you break off the sleeves. This will help you see if you need to know a few more rows. You can continue to knit a few rows without extra increases just to get that long enough so it doesnt pull under the arm (but it doesnt get wider if you dont need it to). I hope that helps.

It is Ingalls by Caitlin Hunter. It is a really well written pattern. I have made it twice, it is a really lovely, cosy knit. Thank you for your kind comments.

Hi, great video tutorial! Still confused though, about where the beginning of the round is; I'm assuming in the middle of the cast on stitches where you begin to pick up but later when closing the gap with an ssk you mention this as the start of the round. Thanks 😊

Hi there Thanks for your lovely comment. The start of round is in the middle of the cast on sts under the arm. Because i magic loop, i cant actually place a stitch marker or it will just fall off the needle, but the start of round is definitely where you first join the yarn and start knitting. I hope that helps :)

Thank you so much. The wool blend is Madelinetosh Pashmina and the lace weight is Katia Concept Silk Mohair. They are both lovely yarns.
