The harrowing, vivid story of four Iraqi soldiers’ fight against ISIS. (Aired 2017)
This journalism is made possible by viewers like you. Support your local PBS station here: www.pbs.org/donate.
In “Mosul,” FRONTLINE presented an extraordinary look at the brutal battle to drive ISIS out of Iraq’s second-largest city, which some military commanders described at the time as the deadliest urban combat since World War II.
The people of Mosul had endured the repressive rule of ISIS for more than two years. This is the story of the men who fought back - and defeated the self-proclaimed Islamic State in their stronghold. Filmed on the ground by director Olivier Sarbil over the course of the nine-month battle, “Mosul” offers a stunning look at the high cost of the Iraqi Army’s liberation of Mosul from ISIS in July 2017.

I'm iraqi, i lost almost half of my friends during that war, i swear to God they were all like Amjad, brave, strong, full of life and joy, and either newly married or waiting for their first child, just like him.. we're fine now and safe because of them but it just ( till now) tears me apart whenever i remember how many Amjads we lost.. please pray for them

@@rusi6219 for the most part, the special forces were alright. You're talking about the Iraqi Army or Iraqi Police; they were worthless as hell. We trained tens of thousands of Iraqis and Afghans and every one of them were trash after billons were funneled to them. The only exception were those Iraqi/Afghan special mission units that worked side by side with our Tier 1-2 assets. Probably 5,000 between the lot of them across both countries. Every single US Military man and woman who served between 2003-2020 could tell any of our politicians what was going to happen when we left in any of those years. I remember saying we were going to lose in Afghanistan way back in 2008 and Iraq in 2006. Those soldiers were not soldiers, they were bodies collecting a paycheck midnighting as terrorists.

So much bravery abusing and threatening children and sending them out to look for enemy snipers. They are not that different from the ISIS they are fighting against.
@zancudo1630
@zancudo1630 7 ай бұрын
@@noamto I have to agree, sending civies to stick their heads out to check for snipers, and threatening to kill them is outright a war crime, when he told him he had kids and a family he points a gun to his head and says "and I don't?" nothing brave about that
@Luay91
@Luay91 7 ай бұрын
@@zancudo1630 It's important to consider the context here. These individuals had the daunting task of confronting heavily fortified ISIS forces that had held Mosul since 2014. The enemy was well-prepared and their snipers were particularly elusive. Now, regarding the individual you've mentioned, he bears a distinctive appearance with a shaven mustache and a lower beard, a style commonly associated with ISIS due to their interpretation of sunnah (the way of the prophet). It's unclear whether he adopted this look out of necessity while under ISIS control. However, there are reasons for suspicion, especially given the reported activity around his residence. It appears there was a misinterpretation in the video due to a bad translation, and I don’t know if that was intentional by the film maker. In reality, the soldier said to him, 'don't lie, we just saw him [ISIS] in the house with you’. Also, the “citizen” wearing all black raises another red flag because it’s a ISIS theme. Furthermore, in the video, there seems to be another discrepancy in the translation. He appears to plead at the end, 'don't hold me responsible,' and adds that he has a family and is an orphan. The use of the 'orphan' card is unusual for a grown man and might raise suspicions that he is attempting to elicit sympathy. In such a complex and uncertain situation, it's essential to approach the matter cautiously and consider all factors, but I understand your point of view, the treatment was harsh. Sad reality of war . … For what it’s worth, one of the soldiers told him “don’t be afraid, my dear” at 31:15. 🤷 Oh and by the way, since you mentioned it, there is another miss translation. He didn’t say ‘and I don’t?’. The “citizen” said to him in Arabic ‘I am friend with a family’ which could absolutely mean that he had a family, but he didn’t mention kids, and the soldier replied with smirky comment ‘am I friend of pimps?’. It was NOT ‘and I don’t?’. The “citizen” then replied ‘no, God forbid’, NOT ‘no, no sorry’.

For your fallen soldiers, there is a peom we say in memory, i hope it carries its meaning in translation to your language "They went with songs to the battle, they were young, Straight of limb, true of eye, steady and aglow. They were staunch to the end against odds uncounted: They fell with their faces to the foe. They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old: Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn. At the going down of the sun and in the morning We will remember them. Lest we forget"

They seem better trained now than when I was there before. I hated some of the Iraqi officers back then 'cause of how they talked down on their soldiers saying things like "They're only good for making tea". Iraqi people are so nice and friendly, it's so warming whenever I meet them and even in the US. When I was there though only the Shiites were nice to us but I have nothing against the Sunnis. When I was there though the biggest issue wasn't even the Coalition forces against the insurgents, it was mostly the Sunnis and Shiites fighting each other, I really hope Iraq can find its peace. I was with the first US troops in Mosul after our Shock & Awe bombing campaign lifted. We were the first Americans the residents of Mosul had seen. They thought we had X-ray vision in our goggles and didn’t yet realize we bled too. The city was calm for the most part, until the Bush administration disbanded the Ba’ath Party and all hell broke loose, which still continues to this day. It breaks my heart. May God be with those in Mosul.

Truly impressive job capturing the realness of what is not seen by the majority. Mosul is and has been such a unique and challenging city landscape. The massiveness of this city makes it near impossible to control the movement in and out of persons, vehicles and equipment. The city also being split in two by the Tigris river having 5 primary bridges I remember very well. Watching this shown in this manner really took me back two decades ago with memories. Really appreciate the work that it takes to have this true representation of the environment.
