MOTH MIMICRY IT LOOKS JUST LIKE A WASP!

Introducing the Oak Clearwing borer moth - Paranthrene simulans. This is a very impressive wasp mimic that emerges in the spring time in North Florida. I was able to attract them using artificial sex pheromone lures. In this video, I actually catch the moth right along side of a Hymenoptera species that look just like it in the same swing. This is a short video but one that shows off the impressive mimicry of this Sessiid moth species.

Wow! I have never seen anything like this before, the moth looked very beautiful and I would've probably saw it at a quick glance as a wasp, the fly was a lot more convincing though, it looked like it actually had a stinger, and I was thinking you just found a wasp until I saw the head. Two very beautiful and interesting specimens.

Wasp or moth? One way to tell absolutely for sure. Grab it in your hand and if you get stung it’s a wasp! 😂 Are you sure that other specimen is a wasp? It looks like a hover fly, some of which are also wasp mimics.

That’s one way to do it !! 🤣 but I’d hate to rub the scales off if it were a moth. Otherwise it would be a “go” I think you’re right about the other insect. I have to take a closer look at

I caught a big hummingbird clearwing moth this summer, my daughter thought it was a bumble bee at first.

No - they don’t change. When they emerge, they pop out of the chrysalis looking exactly like a hornet / wasp. All at once and fully formed
