Isn’t this another Texas case of a severely mentally sick person, being found guilty to satiate peoples natural horror & outrage…only for the verdict to be overturned on appeal (eventually) so she can get the treatment that she deserves? Do you believe that the death penalty is a ‘just’ punishment for a horrific murder, ALWAYS, regardless of mental illness? (Assuming that you support the death penalty for the sake of debate here…) When an individual is that sick aren’t the people in her life who did nothing, despite her obvious need for intervention, the most guilty parties here? (Sorry if I was distracted & missed something & there’s evidence that she’s faking mental illness)

@Suzi Monkey We weren't giving our opinion this episode, we were highlighting that high percentage which Texas hands out death sentences for capital murder charges as it is incredibly pertinent since the case took place there. Regarding the legitimacy of Krystle's psychotic break, we're not mental health professionals so we cannot say. I think it would be irresponsible for us to give an opinion either way when Krystle's own family can't get their story straight on whether Krystle had a drug problem or a mental health problem, and their claims of her past psychotic episodes (snipers, hiding in public bathrooms etc) have been called into question as legitimate. Despite them happening in very public places, the only witnesses were Krystle's family. Not saying we agree with the state's prosecution team, but things don't seem particularly cut and dry. This might be a case where we'll never truly know.

My brother has delusional outbursts like this and he’s being released from prison this month. We have told the police about his dangerous behavior and they don’t listen. I see how stuff like this happens because they ask him if he’s okay and he says yes then they leave. I fear for my grandmothers life. It is never anyone’s fault if mental health causes this kind of incredible snap. You can’t force people to take meds. You can’t change the mental health care of another without proof of risk to life. You can’t charge someone with what they COULD do unless they have threatened todo so. I could go on. I wish your family, you’re WHOLE family health happiness safety and peace of mind.

This is very difficult, I have a dear friend who experiences delusions, clones, gangstalking, they seem to be getting worse and it constantly seems that she is getting close to harming someone. But there is no help. The very nature of their disease tells them they don't have a disease. It tells them that illegal substances make them sharper and smarter, and that their prescriptions are bad. Not only is it hard to be family, but it really is so terrifying being in a reality others are not experiencing as well. There must be a safe solution

I have schizophrenia and bipolar (but I don't do drugs). I was in and out of hospitals since I was 5 and almost killed my newborn cousin when I was 10 because of hallucinations. My last hospitalization was when I was 19 (just turned 26 today). I refuse to have kids because of this. I've lost so many friends when I told them about my mental health issues because, "I don't want you to kill me." Also, it's funny when family members claim they "tried" to help their loved ones. But nine times out of ten, it's a lie. Where were they when their loved one was having difficulties? Clearly not helping.

Not sure how the USA sanitary system works, I heard it was not free so either they couldn't allow it, didn't care, maybe made her go to see a specialist once as a kid and they failed to diagnose her. As an adult her consumption of druggs made the symptoms worse (and I wonder if she consumed them because of the things she was seeing) I doubt she fully understood what was happening to her, or maybe they didn't take her seriously... I mean if your daughter tells you about some bird man chasing her and you know she has a kid how on earth you don't do a thing? It's really beyond me, but we all know that such families exist. The sentence she was given proves it, she needs to be in a mental institution and I doubt that she was even fit to a fair trial, yet everyone there thought she was pretending to be crazy. Extremely sad that a child had to die in that way and that it will happen again because these cases are not taken seriously not before something horrible happens nor after.

I completely agree. Idk what i expected when i hit play but my attitude towards this clearly very sick individual did a 180. Even if a small fraction of the things that her family claims she did were true, she would STILL be considered extremely mentally disturbed. Her family COMPLETELY failed bother her and her daughter. I mean JR. Claimed that she was acting bizarre and brandishing a knife THE DAY BEFORE SHE ATTACKED HER DAUGHTER!! How NO ONE saw red flags FLYING is entirely beyond me. Like i said even if one of the times her family described was true she NEVER should have even had that baby or been alone w her in any capacity. How the father in law could say that she EVER acted "normal " is unbelievably doubtful in my own opinion..... not to be gorry or make anyone upset any further , but the manner that she describes mutilating her baby sort of echos the way that dolls from back in the day were assembled. They said something about slicing her all the way down her back and looking for a ring.... later she said key.... but does anyone remember how dolls that talked or made sounds would sometimes have a zipper or velcro down the back to expose the sound elements of the toy? Also there were many dolls who spoke with first the action of a ring usually located near the back of the toy and needing to be pulled. The similarities to me are creepily undeniable . She was failed by anyone and everyone who she loved most and caused the loss of a little angel, too precious for this cruel world. I feel weird about this story. Obviously sad and horrified... but almost ashamed at myself for even watching it. This is such a tragedy that it feels wrong to sensationalize it in any way. Instead let this story serve a purpose that mental illness is a truly horrible thing and if ignored the damage can be exponentially worse. Speak up, tell someone, anyone. Encurage anyone in ur life with mental illness to seek help , dont be hung up on ," what will the neighbors say?...".... mental illness needs to stop being looked at as shameful... because ignoring or denying such things could truly lead to an all together sadder and more horrible event that no one will be able to hide or ignore.

This was one reason I became CF. I knew I wasn't in the right mental headspace in general and I don't want to risk my kids getting hurt in the middle of my mood swings or breakdowns. I grew up with a parent who suffered from mental illness and addiction and it was enough to traumatize me even now. She did try her best but I knew she was suffering quietly. Tragically my mom took her life and it'll be 3 years next week since she's been gone. I can't fathom knowing I scarred my kids if I went this far and took my own life. I struggle with suicidal thoughts and have attempted in the past. I don't want them to suffer with mental illness and pass on the cycle to their kids. I hope this poor baby is in a better place. What boggles me is if people knew she wasn't mentally ok, why didn't they step in? Why are they still defending her? I wouldn't want people defending me for doing something so irreversible and horrible to anyone because I'm "misunderstood" and "damaged". Psychosis is the scariest thing I’ve ever encountered in my life, I’ve known 2 people in my life who have episodes of it and you never even see it coming on. One of them had me fearing for my life and when they came out of it they didn’t even remember or understand what happened. The other one was more calmer but would make outrageous claims/beliefs that ultimately ruined her relationships, school and jobs. They would both be very emotional and ANGRY during these episodes then just go back to being normal people for awhile. It was still overall the most uncomfortable and scariest situation dealing with them. I was the one who had to get help for the first person I mentioned because people with psychosis can be normal until an episode, so not everyone catches it. Also it’s very very hard to get them to start taking meds for it and their brain could be so damaged that it doesn’t even work. Psychosis is just bad all around and idek what to say about this lady because I could see someone in a psychosis episode killing someone then not even realizing what they did. I just hope she’s in a behavioral health institution and not prison so shes actually forced to get help.

I’ve had delusions that everyone was a clone. Including my own kids. It’s not that unusual for people who are psychotic. It would be very unlikely for someone to say what she did so they could feign insanity. Based on the evidence presented in the video, I’m 100 percent certain she was insane. This story will be incredibly shocking to people, but all of her bizarre beliefs were typical for a person in the grip of psychosis. We all believe similar things - it’s just that most of us, by the grace of God, act them out symbolically rather than literally. The thing is, if any of you had suffered the same delusions, you would have done the same thing. But I’m sure you’ll all disagree with me. Nobody can possibly understand it unless they have been through it. The arguments by the prosecution could easily have been explained by an expert of lived experience. There was nothing there that made me think she wasn’t experiencing a completely different, and terrifying, reality when she killed her daughter. As for her attitude now, well she’s obviously still insane. She’s unlikely to ever come right because her psyche will be protecting her from the excruciating suffering she would experience if she was ever to return to consensus reality. She probably believes that her daughter is in Heaven, and it’s the best place for her because the devil was after her pure soul. She may or may not be on meds. Refusing to take them is very typical and simply further evidence of her lack of insight. Even if she’s being forced to take them, meds are not the panacea that so many believe them to be. They can be helpful for some people. For me, thankfully, they help most of the time. One lingering question I have is what happened to that poor woman when she was a child to cause her to suffer such severe paranoia as an adult? It must have been pretty atrocious. Psychosis is caused by unresolved severe trauma, didn’t you know? Just be grateful that you’ve all got your wits about you. You don’t know how precious sanity is until you lose it. 🙏

The meds, while they *would* make her realize the reality of her actions, they’re also SO horrible to take, the adjustment phase alone feels like snakes crawling under one’s skin. (Usually takes between 2 weeks - a month before a doc can determine whether they’re working as is or need to be increased.) I told the psych ward I didn’t hear them anymore with the dose they gave me because I wanted to get OUT & AWAY from that horrible place. (They give nothing for entertainment, nothing to do, it’s like jail- but THAT’S yet ANOTHER story. Antipsychotics are so strong that it takes a LONNNNNNG time of adjusting but if the dosage level is too low (which it always IS to begin with), then increasing it, even the slightest bit, causes going through the snakes sensations, all over again. It’s an arduous process. No telling how many times a person needs the dosage adjustments either - everybody is different. It’s for that reason, most don’t take the meds and end up on the streets - not to mention they’re usually so expensive, not many can afford it, anyway. I abused adderall and started hearing voices - THEY ARE AWFUL. What they SAY is horrific & they’re all screaming at the same time, 24/7. They say THE most disgusting, demonic things & they have the ability to copy anyone’s voice. It’s impossible for anyone who hasn’t experienced it to understand so I try to explain as best I can. Imagine all of a sudden, you’re hearing voices .. they sound like they’re coming out of the fans, vents, tv, basically everything electronic (for some reason?) but even going outside, it’s so scary because the wind turns into these voices, any SOUND does it in such a way where it’s just downright terrifying. It took me 10 months of dealing with it before I relented and went to the hospital … where I knew they would commit me but THAT was a whole other experience, too. (They immediately treat people with any mental issues like they’re a criminal, they handcuff you to the bed, have a cop monitor you nonstop, even going to the bathroom has to be done where they can see you. I get it, things can get dangerous but they certainly shouldn’t do things to make any person feel like a criminal. Anyway that’s a whole other story. But no doubt those who are considering getting help are SCARED for that reason, too! On top of an already scary situation!!! Think of what you’d do, if that happened to you. It’d scare the crap out of you & there’s certain stages one goes through. Trying to ignore it. Denial, fear, all kinds of emotions. Plus the headaches you get from the constant noise…and they DO try to trick the person. It’s sad, it’s a constant cat and mouse game. They say you have to do this and that to save humanity (oddly enough, the voices do & say similar things amongst every person. Use what works, I guess, right?) then when you’re not buying it, they copy voices of your family; screaming and being tortured “just because you won’t do what we’re telling you to do”. It’s crazy. A literal hell on earth. God healed me but before I got help, I tore up all my pictures, including ones of my daughter. So to this day my 26 yr old doesn’t have ANY pictures from her childhood, growing up, all the special moments…they’re gone. It’s certainly no comparison to what happened in this video but they def get you to do things that you’ll end up being upset over later. Because at the time, it made sense. And it’s far more complicated than what I’ve even said- food doesn’t taste the same so you think you’re being poisoned. Your body has shocks and pains that you’ve never experienced in your life, so with NOTHING making any sense, then saying they’re: the government, aliens, demons, angels, family, etc. Even the most insane nonsense starts to make sense. Sorry I wrote a novel but it takes one, in order to understand even SOME of the chaos.

While I can understand how people feel outraged and feel like when we say she was psychotic we are giving "excuses" but reasons and causes are different than excuses. And most of those people, luckily, have not had experience with psychosis hallucinationsand psychotic breaks. It's no longer a choice for them any more it's a scary reality. I have been on the verge of psychosis due to a huge trauma followed by drug binge (I had poor coping skills) and had I not been aware ( because of therapy and rehab programs and my favorite subject to hyperfocus on is psychology and human behavior) and quick enough to catch it it's very likely I hurt someone,I thought my friends were plotting to kill me.

This is a very sad story all around on multiple levels. So many people failed Crystal and her daughter that it is extremely horrifying on the highest level. From members of Crystal's family that witnessed her delusions to Junior and his family to even the prosecution that ended up selling to the jury that Crystal did what she did to her daughter because of drugs. A lot of folks who have hard core mental health challenges resort to the use of drug and alchcol use to cope with what is going on with them especially when it appears that they are not being believed on what they are dealing with and when the doctors who claim that they are trying to help them just perscribe a bunch of meds in avoidance of truly helping these people. Some of those same doctors perscribe all these meds to people like Crystal to avoid helping to the point where they do not even check how the comboniation of meds will affect the person, especially in the long term. I feel that some of the jury in Crystal's case chose conviction for the simple reason that they did not want to see Crystal hurt any more people and maybe she could finally get the help she needs in prison. Other members of that same jury I feel most like did not have a very high belief in the existence of mental health challenges and so those jurors voted for conviction very quickly as a result. And, Crystal probably did not get the death penalty cause there were enough members of the jury who either flat out did not believe in the death penalty. Or, really felt that there were enough jurors that believed that Crystal's mental health challenges played a part in what happened and giving the death penalty to Crystal would not have changed anything that has happened in the case. Thank you to the folks behind The Misery Machine and all that you do to bring these tough stories to life. It is an honor to be a subscriber of this channel.

To clarify the part about her having marijuana in her system, its because a blood toxicology test only shows that someone has used marijuana within the last 2 weeks. It does not show if the person is actively high at the time. Since the traces remain for such a long time, it does not work the same as alcohol to show active intoxication. So the police are saying that they know she used weed within the last 2 weeks, but they cant say if she was high at the time of the incident.

i have bipolar 1 and suffer from mild psychosis when manic. i forget entire days-moments from periods when im manic-psychotic will look like still frames in my mind, with little context. i too have delusions, and even intrusive thoughts, but i’ve never been a violent person towards anyone. i fear having kids because of my mental condition; i would have to cease medication, and i’m at a higher risk for postpartum illnesses. it’s just a huge risk. people with a history of psychosis aren’t evil, but i concede that we can be unreliable at times. we need protection from ourselves, and sometimes, others need protection from us. if her family knew this, they should’ve stepped up to protect Gio and facilitated outpatient care for Krystle (at the minimum).

I do believe that her relatives were there at her hearing to help her- what other reason would they have to be there?? Idt they're creating stories or lying for her. I believe the reason they didn't immediately disclose her psychosis to the officials is probably the same reason she didn't disclose it: shame! America clearly throws a label and stigma on folks who suffer with mental illness. Its not some great title ppl wanna carry w em. Nobody WANTS TO have shit wrong w em psychologically!! That's why we hide these things! Ppl judge (n I guess by rite we should for r own safety, we still need to protect our selves n loved ones, so I get it) others pretty harshly sometimes. My brother in law is mentally unwell with paranoia schizophrenia. When he was unwell, he would see/hear things that weren't there. He would have whole conversations with people who weren't there and even physically react to things only he could see. He burned his home down trying to escape the voices. He is doing well now, but it took 5 years of meds/hospitalization and he is currently living in a group home. He is just now starting to function on a more normal level. His brain is permanently damaged. It is crazy how he was ok, just a little strange to completely psychotic in the matter of 1 yr.

*this does not mean I am vouching for this womans actions- I am not sure if she was really in psychosis or not.* I have bipolar 2 and a doctor prescribed me Lithium- I took it as prescribed and went to my weekly bloodwork, unfortunately the negative symptoms crept up on me and also the lithium threw me into a full blown manic episode- I severely hallucinated visually/ auditory/ physically etc. I got a bunch of other negative side effects as well like vertigo (which I had never experienced before etc). I was very experienced when it came to medications so I ended up making it through it and stopped taking the meds immediately after realizing the hallucinations were not going to subside like other negative side effects from new mental health meds) with my dr's approval. It prob lasted a couple weeks..it was by far the most terrifying and vulnerable experience of my life. I also have had multiple people in my life with schizophrenia and psychosis so I recognized the signs right away.. I was just so scared to get locked up because in the moment I was scared I was developing a severe psychosis id be stuck in and therefor be locked up forever (a delusion- but I believed it fully in the moment).. it is EXTREMELY SERIOUS and there should be a lot more awareness of theorists of mental health issues and especially misdiagnoses- being a human guineau pig to the psychs- drug use of any kind while having any mental illness' etc. I was so terrified every second of every day during the psychosis and was honestly too scared to go to emergency room etc due to stigmas. So I just dealt with it myself and with the help of a family dr. I was very lucky to make it through alive- and without harming myself or someone else. When they say you can fully believe your hallucinations/delusions they mean it. My brain took real things and twisted them into concerning things which scared me and caused severe anxiety and paranoia. I PHYSICALLY felt things that were NOT there.

I have personally known someone with severe schizophrenia with paranoid delusions, capgras syndrome, hallucinations, and psychosis. I spent a lot of time around him and saw this kind of behavior when he was in the midst of a psychotic episode. He would have to be put into a psych ward typically within 48 hours of things becoming severe and stay there for a few weeks to a month until stabilized. It was very sad and quite scary to watch. What finally worked for him was having family members who would take him to get injections of antipsychotic meds that would last in his system for about a month. Even those didn’t completely fix anything. He told me that weed made the voices worse so he stayed away from it. I think this woman should have gotten an insanity sentence. She’s too dangerous to be in prison where she can refuse her meds. This story is absolutely horrible. That poor little girl.

Not to mention she stated she didn't tell the truth to the doctors because she was afraid to get institutionalized so basically she knew her actions were "crazy." Crazy ppl usually don't distinguish the difference between their normal versus their crazy actions. Especially when they haven't learned that talking to doctors gets them locked up. It's hard to wrap your head around psychosis until you have dealt with someone with it, but I can totally believe that this was the problem here just from family experience. I have a relative who hid a severe drinking problem for years from the family. I remember first realizing he had a problem when at a get together he drank an entire bottle of wine himself and didn't appear intoxicated at all. We didn't really realize how bad it was until he got a DWI. And then another. And another. We were shocked and confused when his wife had come home to find he had bitten his toddler several times on his body. But still no one guessed he was suffering from psychosis, we blamed the alcohol, until he was found in a closet stabbing a box full of little people. We were all even more shocked when he was diagnosed with schizophrenia - but then all these weird things suddenly made sense. Afterwards we learned that substance abuse is a common coping mechanism for people who have untreated psychosis and families and friends generally blame weird behavior on that, if they notice it at all. Because these people are usually very paranoid as well and so they do not talk about their crazy thoughts. It really delays the person getting help, it was many years for my relative and if he hadn't he finally been diagnosed he probably would have severely hurt himself or someone else. I absolutely do not think that people who commit murders should be let off because of their mental state, because regardless they still did the crime. But I also think these people need treatment before jail. I am curious if she was evaluated for competence before trial. For example, Deasia Watkins decapitated her daughter as well, found not competent to stand trial and sent for treatment at a psychiatric hospital. After she was put on meds and had treatment, then she was sentenced to prison. I feel like that is the appropriate way to handle someone with psychosis.

I love how people always say “they wouldn’t do something like that” 𝑨𝑭𝑻𝑬𝑹 they indeed, 𝑫𝑰𝑫 do something exactly like that.

I work in an adolescent RTC facility and one of the kids I have on my unit has schizophrenia. He's only 13 but he's had some messed up hallucinations, but nothing to lead to him hurting anyone. He's hallucinated his grandmother dying, a giant gory version of one of his sister's teddy bears in his room, bugs flying around him when he's on the phone, and his most common one is of a 'creepy lady' either standing outside his window or scaring him in the bathroom. It's always sad when he calls me over and is just like 'Hey, my sister's teddy bear is over there, it's covered in blood and just standing there' and he's just terrified. Another kid we have right now is I think 17 and his psychosis is worse. He's almost always on the unit we use to separate kids being dangerous away from the rest and we often hear him screaming at the voices in his head to shut up. He's attacked staff and kids multiple times out of nowhere and almost constantly asks for us to take him to the hospital or 'call a code blue' because of various symptoms he hallucinates. His most common one is his head squishing around. It's scary to work around it sometimes, I can't imagine being around Krystle with her delusions and hallucinations and be like 'oh yeah that was weird but eh whatever'.

Under HIPPA, which you probably had to sign to work at this type of facility, telling these facts about kids in your care is HIGHLY illegal.

So her family heard her say she drank bleach to get rid of a demon, but thought their niece and granddaughter would be safe with her? That makes sense, I totally makes sense.
