I’ve been to that cliff, or one near there. My husband fished off the ledge. and even in crystal clear weather those rocks are so slippery.. I was terrified to go anywhere near the edge. I think I crawled out once just to look down at the huge waves. I know people go down there in the dark. People who live in the area, especially. We saw tents and people fishing when we got there. We were warned to have a local with us. Not just to show us the good spots but to tell us where not to go for our safety. Sad situation.. I feel like there’s more to the story…

This is so sad and scary as ever. The only situation I can think of close to this was our trip to Costa Rica driving up those hills and it was raining. My husband don’t use the toll roads at home so on his phone this wasn’t turned on which lead us on the back roads which were rocky and hilly. We literally could have went over the hill. Down below was beautiful coastline Pacific Ocean water. All I can say is in moments like that you have to slow down and really think clearly.

Incredibly sad for the loss of someone so young, but the blame cannot solely be placed on the emergency responders. Any kind of boating or swimming after dark, is dangerous. And if you're not a strong swimmer, which obviously neither she was, nor her boyfriend is, don't sit where you can be swept into the surf, particularly after dark! If you're caught in the surf, and are not a strong swimmer, simply float on your back. The water will buoy you up. This is particularly easy in salt water. If she had floated out from shore, then the coast guard could have rescued her. They have pulled people from the water, who have been in there for hours. But their vessels, including helicopters, cannot come extremely close to shore, near rocks, and where it is shallow. When she was yelling for help, they should have yelled to her, "Float on your back! Do not try to swim ashore!". While it is difficult to swim for several hours, it is not difficult to float for several hours. Very sad.
