In this video, we explore a profound real-life story that intersects with Mother's Day, traumatic loss, and the resilience of the human spirit. Our focus is a patient, a recent widower and father, undergoing cancer surgery on this significant day. His story serves as an inspiring example of discovering gratitude in adversity, illuminating the benefits of such an attitude on health and wellbeing.
We dive into the transformative power of gratitude, showing its positive impacts on mental health, cardiovascular health, and immune system functioning, even in the face of medical trauma. We discuss how it can alleviate chronic pain and contribute to a smoother recovery from surgery and anesthesia.
Harnessing the power of gratitude isn't always straightforward. In this video, we reveal innovative ways to modify traditional gratitude practices, engaging more senses to enhance their potency. We look at how these methods can be used to cope with and overcome adverse life events, such as the loss of a parent, abusive experiences, or other traumatic childhood occurrences.
Mother's Day can be a source of pain for many who have experienced maternal losses or have PTSD stemming from such events. We underscore the significance of recognizing these traumas and the toll they can take on mental and emotional wellbeing. Here, forgiveness emerges as a crucial tool in the healing process.
This video provides a space for open conversation about Mother's Day, trauma, and PTSD, while offering empowering strategies centered around gratitude and forgiveness. Whether you've faced a similar situation, or you're interested in the health benefits of gratitude and forgiveness, this video offers valuable insights.
Join us as we journey through this touching story of resilience, unpack the science behind gratitude, and offer practical advice on nurturing forgiveness, even in the face of trauma.

I just went through surgery. I had a lot of anxiety because of PTSD. I was very concerned because I thought I would fight the hospital staff while I was down under and a lot of unpleasant stuff would happen because I would remember what it was like to fight for my life. I watched many of your videos and came to really like you. I took a lot of your advice to heart. One of the things I did was talk with the surgical staff so everyone was aware of my anxiety. I never saw the mask put on me. I really appreciate that. I don’t even remember going under. Something awesome happened to me when I woke up. I couldn’t stop crying. I thought I died and went to heaven because of all the good-hearted people that were caring for me after surgery. I was overcome with an incredible sense of gratitude that I do believe finally put an end to PTSD. The presence of goodness overcame the darkness. The surgery was a success and healing happened faster than expected. You took the time to make your videos so I’m going to take the time to share my experience and say thank you so much for empowering us.

My name is Keri and I live in the US. This is so tear jerking cuz I lost my Dad from Leukemia back in 1998 and just recently in 2021 I lost my Mom to Kidney Failure so I don't have my parents to do anything with for their special days except to look up to Heaven and say Happy Mother's Day or Happy Father's Day respectively. This is a hard time of year for me cuz it's still fairly fresh for me since losing my mom. But to all our Moms or Moms in Haven Happy Mother's Day! To my mom in Heaven I love you and miss you!!

Dr K, your videos are among the best i have ever seen. They are so thoughtful, so informative, and help many people with concerns about anesthesia feel better. You may have already covered it but many people dont understamd why its so important NOT to eat or drink anything before surgery. Would be great to cover that. I lost my mom 20 years ago due to an inexperienced nurses aide who.gave my mom some soup and water an hour before her surgery. Long story short, she was in recovery and nobody was watching her and she aspirated. 30 days of trying to fix the bacterial pneumonia and it was just too extensive. Many people dont understand why they should be "empty" prior to surgery. You probably already covered this but jist in case.....it would be superb. You make the world so much better! John

My Doc is running a test to see if my body produces too much adrenaline. My grandma, mom, sister and her daughters, me and one of my son's all have dealt with a lifetime of panic attacks and anxiety. It would be crazy if it's genetic in nature. Still, nomatter the cause, gratitude is always a good thing! Sometimes, it seems like you have my journal and are reading it, lol. The things we suffer are vastly universal, it appears.

Working as a therapy aid in a developmental center where the vast majority of the patients were mentally challenged, I went home every day thanking God for the health of my children. Then a friend's husband was in a motor vehicle accident & became brain damaged, resulting in his becoming a long term patient there. She also had young children & was forced to file for divorce as there was zero chance of his recovery. Each of us needs to be grateful, every day, for countless blessings that we take for granted.

I’ve forgiven my mom because she had me extremely young and I was able to achieve much more than she had and didn’t start a family until I was ready. Unfortunately she died in her mid-forties and was not old enough nor equipped to be a teenage parent nor continued to be one so my Nana, Gramma and friends moms helped guide me. As well I became very equipped to take care of my self at a very young age. All these Mothers Days adds are triggering me because I don’t have a mom but I do have children who are smart, well adjusted and good people even though they are still young. I pray that continues. Thanks for the stream and enjoy seeing your mom today!🎉❤

Great message!! You're so right about forgiveness. If you can find an ounce of empathy for the parents that harmed you, it's so much easier to live with. Think of their childhood and what made them the way they were with you. Something generally has happened to them along the way to make them angry and abusive or just not nice to be around. It doesn't excuse anything, but it makes it easier to understand why it happened. I will never have contact with my father again, but I finally let him go with love and wishing him nothing but peace in his life. The affects of what he did will always be there. You can't come out of something so traumatic without some damage, and I spent years being angry about it, but that only caused me more damage. Maybe age is the key too. You get a little wiser when you're older and see things differently. What I went through made me extremely empathetic to kids and maybe if I hadn't of gone through that, I never could have helped the kids that I have. In that respect I'm grateful. When my adopted daughter tells me about her life before us, and that she doesn't know what would have happened to her without my husband and I, it makes what I went through have meaning.

Thinking the way you do guarantees you are happy, peaceful & live a better life. Being angry, bitter would only hurt you more. Past is just that & future will bring wonderful happy memories for you & your family to make together. You're best Mum out just like my Mum was ❤ she had similar background to you regards her Dad....both of you suffered & knew great loss but turned it all around Rose above. We all have bad experiences with people, and it's normal to project the bad feeling onto others who fit the same group - doctors, teachers, police, social workers, clergy - whatever. But the truth is that every group is composed of individual humans. What works for me is starting with the assumption that every human is basicly good, and well intentioned, and letting them be the one to prove themselves otherwise.

I'm 71 and have Parkinson's; my older sister has dementia. I am a computer programmer and the idea of potentially following her cognitively was difficult. But much more difficult was the idea of loss of facial affect. My brain has led most of my life, but my 'end-of-life' bargain with God is: 'I'll accept the physical and mental deterioration - just don't take away my smile. That may be the only way I have left to say Thank You to those around me.' 'Thank You' was my immediate choice of first comments, simply because it unfortunately is such a rare response to those who help us through the hard things. Gratitude may be the most powerful medicine available.

Thank you for your message. Searching for and taking hold of an attitude of gratitude is so powerful. "What Is a "Garment Of Praise"? Verse 3 uses the word 'garment', a physical item of clothing, to represent a person's inner attitude. God purposely chose the image of exchanging old, damaged and worn pieces for a new crown, oil and robe to show the drastic rejuvenation He can create in someone's spirit."

This triggered alot of ptsd for me. It also made me grateful... for the fact that when my accuweather app today said 43% chance of rain i immediately told my mom that our drain pipe from the roof was blocked up so we fixed it today. Grateful that i redecorated my driveway just before it began to rain which i knew it would despite the 40% odds, im grateful for the frontline plus i put on my kitty tonight and she just came up to me for attention. Then my mom is fighting in her sleep telling an invisible being to get out of her room. Elinor was my dads friends name. She wouldnt let me program his cell phone and was rude. She was a nurse. Im grateful that when the hospital finaly handed me the consent to sign for my surgery that the nurse practioner ob/gyn did something insane and i immediately said not with you... too bad because it needed done but she was saying insane things. My kitty climbed into my moms open car window so im grateful for her again. This video was like knocking down a house of cards.

Thank you for creating this channel and for the universe leading me here. Your messages are very powerful and greatly needed. I used to work in the OR and was of the mindset that our patients were well informed abt their procedures and what to expect. Recently however unfortunately I was diagnosed with squamous cell carcinoma of my bottom lip and reactive lymphnodes in my neck. I wanted bx of my nodes and of course my scc removed. I woke up with an ear to ear incision, 2 drains and completely traumatized. I left the hospital AMA bc I felt my Dr was going to harm me and it has been a nightmare. Your vids have helped me deal with my situation and I'm looking unto ketamine infusion. Thank you for being so kind and advocating so well for your pts. good outcome. It is priceless. Wish me luck as I try to progress forward through this horrible experience. I have very little faith in our Healthcare system at this point. I certainly am setting a healing Intention when I have my infusion. That is if I'm approved. Thank you for your time after long hrs in the OR. You are a special person that truly cares, that is plain to see. Much gratitude, D from PA. 😊

Great video and topic. Gratitudes are part of my chronic pain tool box. Taking a little time throughout the day to be grateful does help take the anxiety down a couple of levels. There is more to be grateful for than not. I've had quite a few surgeries and in 2013 I had to have another sinus surgery. Something happened during the surgery and when they woke me up I was blind in my right eye. I just remember holding my doctors hand and telling him I will okay. They had brought in another specialist and put me back to sleep then did an optic nerve decompression. I was lucky that I got some of my eyesight back - approximately 30%. It's like looking through a cloudy window with sunglasses. But hey, I can still my loved one and can even drive. Please don't tell me I should have sued the doctor...that wouldn't bring back my vision and that's not who I am as a person. My doctor was elderly and I had every faith in him otherwise I would not allowed him to operate. I know he was devestated because he told me how what happened to me was a risk of the surgery and he didn't understand how a doctor could make such a mistake...until it happened to him. I know he felt horrible and it will be with him forever but I just had faith that God would give me what I needed not what I wanted. In closing hug your mom tight for a few extra seconds, not for her but for yourself. My mother in love passed away April 22 from Dementia. I'm so very grateful for the 2 days God gave us where she knew everyone, was able eat and drink but best of all we got to tell her how loved she was . So everyday above ground is a good day!!!😊

I'm thankful for your explanations. Knowledge is, along with everything else, soothing. I've had a couple of really difficult situations with anesthesia. I'd have been so happy to have the anesthesiologist listen as well as you do. At least, now, from listening to you, I have a better idea of how to communicate with an anesthesiologist if I ever need one again. So, thank you very much! You're an honor to your mother's parenting... probably your dad's as well!! Go you! Plus, I'm a Christian. I'm an Eastern Orthodox Christian. We listen to what the Saints have said. Both St. Isaac of Syria and St. Seraphim of Sarov have said that when we're thankful for even the difficulties and terrible things that happen to us, that's when we know we've been overshadowed by the Holy Spirit. It's hard, and can only be done with God's help. This is what the Peace of God is. There is nothing better than that for humans, both in this life and the next. 😊 In my Church, all the women are my mothers. My own mother died a long time ago. Both my grandmothers and aunts have died, but I can go to any woman in my Church and get the same info, perspective, love, support, affection, guidance, etc, as if my own mother were there. That's the depth of love that's there. You might say, not all women are so nurturing and that's true. But, when you're in a group with all the same spiritual "goals" or "rules," then everyone can be trusted to have your best in mind and heart.

Happy Mother's day to all moms , living or in heaven. Have a wonderful weekend. I want to say thank you to you for your videos as they are helpful at understanding what goes on during a surgery. I have multiple health issues and have had issues of not having my O2 SATs stay up where they need to be. I'm 63 yrs young and asthmatic with chronic bronchitis and it scares me every time I have to go under. What can I do to prevent this from happening, I'm on inhalers, and nightly meds to control my asthma. I've had lung issues all my life since birth

Dr I had my outpatient surgery today and I did very good. The anesthesia doctor didn't stick the tube down my throat because I have asthma and the surgery wasn't gonna be that long. It was a nasel polyp removal. I did very well and it just felt like I was in a deep sleep when I woke up. Very good experience. I had no idea they can do general anesthesia without intubation. The doc said the air tube would just be placed in the back of my throat. Can you do a video on that kind of procedure. Thank you

What a nice story. I gotta ask: Do you have leftover propofol from a prior surgery in your hand in most videos? The cynic in me suspects you drew up varying amounts of white paint into several syringes to make us think so. All the practical jokes my two sons have played on me over the years have conditioned me to look for such things. They're fantastic, and they make me proud.

@titchytan8384 Physicians can’t diagnose your specific physical problems overthe Internet: They have not seen you attheir offices, read through your labs and detailed medical history that you would have completed in their office before your initial visit with them. They could get sued or have problems with malpractice insurance & it would be unethical and improper for this doctor to dispense medical advice about your personal healthh problems. This guy is empathetic and clearly well-trained [Stanford and Harvard]but let’s not put him in the position to ‘diagnose’ you over the Internet so he loses his livelihood and medical license. Yes, he’s cool and explains well but it’s not fair to physicians when they get these questions. 🪴

"If he can do it, so can you!". Dr. K, I believe you have no idea what kind of harm you have done in that one phrase by "gratitude shaming" folks who have been thru unfathomable histories. The hidden "shoulds" from folks in positions of authority are the most insidious. Gratitude is caught - not taught. My childhood was a decades long seminar in intellectualized repression via expectations to mimic gratitude. I played "gratitude" to go along and to survive. Fake gratitude only destroys. Superficial gratitude poisons. I finally caught gratitude by watching the actions of healthy folks - not by shaming nor proscriptive instructions. Please, no response just deep consideration.

I had 9 sinus surgeries in 15 years… each time I was almost late and laid down in exhaustion to anesthesia. (I called the surgeries “naps”. I woke up feeling great because I mention to the anesthesiologist that I need a good reversal so I won’t be so sick afterwards. I will give Jesus glory for helping me through as well~ as I have been known to be smiling before opening my eyes. My mother can be grateful that I forgive her for leaving me in the basement to die~ God had other plans for me.
