Great observation from the both of you. When I was in my adolescent years, I'd have to listen to Spanish music played by my parents. I wasn't amused so I'd listen to RocknRoll. My parents would constantly say "Don't listen to LSD music such as Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, etc..." That's when headphone use was constantly used by my 2 brother and I. A couple of weeks later while my parents were running errands I was listening to "Mother" in my room nice and loud. All of a sudden my door opens; I quickly lower my stereo expecting expecting to be yelled at. My parents walk in with a big smile and say, "Now that's a beautiful song, who is it... ? Hesitantly I replied, "Pink Floyd". Then like the dogs they are, they looked at each other tucking their tails between their legs, and slowly walk out. I actually felt victory!! Now they listen to PF with good spirits and no regrets. This story always puts a smile on my face!!!

Thats hilarious. My parents said the same thing about 'rock bands', but I was listened to San Tropez one day and they said "thats so much better than the garbage people listen to like Pink Floyd nowadays". They used to berate the Monty Python I watched as idiotic, and on the car radio one day was the Parrot sketch and they laughed harder than I'd ever seen them laugh. I think parents just get newsletters of what they are supposed to object to and just follow along without ever actually looking at anything.

@@caperboy1169 To be fair, he’s right, you can only look at this song in the context of the album, which was always intended to end up on the big screen. You guys absolutely need to do "Us and Them" from Dark Side of the Moon! It's a couple songs After Time On the Dark Side of the Moon album and is one of the most beautiful yet powerful anti-war anti social classes songs ever written!! It divides the leaders and the grunts in the military and the lyrics really are brilliant!! Then again almost any Pink Floyd song ends up being brilliant! One final note that you'll find with Pink Floyd songs is they're always relevant! That's because the way Rodger Waters writes his lyrics they don't date themselves plus you can't pin them down to any other genre, they are their own genre! We enjoy your videos keep it up!!

Lovely reaction ladies. As many others have already said, when it comes to "The Wall", you really need to hear the whole album (or watch the whole film) from start to finish, otherwise you may miss out on crucial aspects of the story. It's a concept album, so it's difficult to break the whole context down through just one or two songs if you've not heard the whole thing. Trust me, you'll love it! It's very dark and not the happiest of tales as it deals with deteriorating mental health, but it's an absolute masterpiece of musicianship and lyrics.

I suggest you get the album The Wall which that song is on - it was meant to be a heard together, all the songs tell the story - now the original idea was that the songs were separate but together they explored a concept - they all fit together to explain how people become isolated and alienated. Each song has a bit of background behind how it was written and what lead to the imagery in it which is what most people focus on but only when you put them all together do you understand what they are really about. The stuff people normally focus on tells you the HOW of the song, not the WHY [I hope that makes sense] Now later they produced the movie which consolidates the songs even more by creating a single narrative so there is no question what it is about. I personally recommend hearing the album first and then watch the movie - this gives context. Sadly I watched the movie first and later heard the album - I say sadly because I feel it would have been more powerful in the other order since with the album you have a loose collection of songs that run a theme but are not exactly a single story and that leaves it more open to your own interpretations and then the movie shows you how they meant it which gives you a deeper understand by seeing both how it relates to you and to the artist. Anyway, this is the first time I have seen you and I wanted to say I like what you have done here.

There is nothing warm about this mother. Fearful, over protective, controlling. Roger Waters grew up without his father. He was killed in WWII so his mother projected all her fears and pain of loss onto her son. This song is from the ground breaking album "The Wall". It was also turned into a Movie... the sound track became the album. Many consider it the greatest album of all time. "The Wall" is a very English Album. Many of the themes deal with the aftermath of World War Two, and how so many English children were effected 20+ years later as they entered early adulthood. "Nobody's Home" is one of the songs on the album, dealing with the fact that many Fathers didn't come home from the war... how kids who had grown up, never getting a chance to speak with their Fathers.... "I try to get through the telephone to you, but I know, there's nobody home". The whole album hurts the soul. But it's a purging kind of pain. "The Wall" is a deep, deep dive into the scarred emotions of many English Baby Boomers. Many turned to fame, or drugs, or sex, to try and fill the emptiness and loss they felt. Ultimately its about building a wall around yourself, isolating yourself from the rest of the world, hiding the pain.

You're both right. Roger Waters said his mother was the opposite of the overbearing mother in The Wall. She wanted him to find a dirty girl and get it over with. She even attended the premiere of the movie with Roger. His dad was killed in WWII, at Anzio, Italy, when Roger wasn't even a toddler.. It affected him deeply. In the album "The Wall," Pink's dad is killed in the war, and his mom smothers him, and tries to keep him "healthy and clean." This has the opposite effect.

They're a traditional green vegetable with turkey Christmas lunch in the UK instead of green beans, but a lot of people hate them because they don't cook them properly! They can have a bitter taste if you don't cut a couple of notches into the base of each sprout to allow the boiling water to cook the sprout thoroughly. Computer also says Brussel sprout production in the US is concentrated in California (San Mateo, Monterey, and Santa Cruz counties) and Long Island, NY.

Great reaction and analysis; Roger lost his father at a young age and his mother was over protective to the point of smothering. The metaphoric 'wall'' was a mental barrier he created to protect himself from all of the unjustified fears his mother put into him. For a different vibe but still very poignant track try Pink Floyd - On The Turning Away (live, remastered). Or anything from the Pulse Live concert.

The lady in the black absolutely nailed it. This song is about an overbearing mother, who is in complete control of her son. And after losing her husband in WWII, has tried to protect her son so much that it's making him very introverted. Of course, everyone can take from it whatever they want, and each of our own life experiences has an effect on how we interpret things. And the beauty of music is that as long as it moves you, there's no wrong interpretation. Anyways, God Bless both of you, glad you've actually took a minute to dive in and listen to a band I've enjoyed for nearly 40 years now. Because Roger's dad died in WW2 when he was a baby, his mother raised him alone. It was a very co-dependent relationship. She smothered him. Later in life Roger acted out in anger and during the "Animals '77 Tour" he spat in a fans face. That was the beginning of his isolation and creation of "The Wall" masterpiece we know today.

This song is quite evident that it is about a suffocating and overprotective mother, a rather negative figure who hangs like a shadow over her son's life and choices, preventing him from becoming a strong and self-aware man. The reason is clear: she lost her husband in the war and towards her son he pours her care and attention in a morbid way for fear of losing him too. While not directly referring to Roger Waters' mother, who did indeed lose his father in World War II in the landing at Anzio, Italy, the entire record "The Wall" is ultimately an anti-war work lest the children grow up without a father. Indeed, as someone said: "The function of fathers is to prevent mothers from driving their children crazy." To become a man, the child will have to free himself from all these fears and insecurities and break down the very high wall that he has built around himself. Happy New Year from Milan, Italy

Pink Floyd sounds like pink Floyd and no one else. It is the pink Floyd sound after all. Nobody can hang with the Floyd. And rush.

Was curious about this reaction when I ran across it. BUT, ya'll did a great job. You kept quiet and listened to and appreciated a great song. Too many reactions are very fake in their overly dramatic reactions. They want to be the entertainment rather than the greatness coming through your headsets.

My first time watching your reaction. I have to say it was very good experience. I find you both very interesting ladies and how you interpret things. I was after being in service an oil field worker myself and as you said was away from home a lot. My wife had it rough trying to hold down the fort so to speak while I was gone with 3 girls. My son

The song is about Pink and his mothers protection of him after her husband is killed in the war. Part of the Wall film.

That's the beauty of Water's lyrics. existentially profound. Pink Floyd are nothing without him.
@offal

So you didn`t hear that beauiful emotional music running through the song, that incredible guitar strum and solo, those keyboard and piano parts, yes Waters lyrics are incredible but equally matched by the music around them, which creates the emotional platform for the lyrics, the 2 are symbiant and unseparable. to say pink floyd are nothing without him is nonsense. Gilmour is the music of Pink Floyd.

@@davedoogan6650Obviously not, absolute horseshit mate lol, they are possibly the most sensory band on the planet. that comes with a few facets, not just lyrics, wish you were here, comfortably numb as examples were written music first, and would possibly not exist wern`t it for the aimless guitar. when your ready to explain or debate the issue instead of shooting off stock statements lemme know, i`m actually suprised you listen to Floyd, judging by your verbal and auditory limitations lol.

@@offal That's why Dave Gilmour (pink floyd) is touring with Roger's songs and not his own right. case closed. p.s. Hey You, if you listen a bit more you might hear a bass guitar too.

She's an overprotective mother, and she crippled him emotionally, so he still asks for her approval as an adult - and she still controls his life as an adult. Roger Waters has said this song is not about his mother though.

you get the concept of the overbearing mother...but you got the meaning of the song all wrong...you need to listen to the whole Wall album then you may get it.

This is a great reaction, you're very good at this. Pink Floyd is widely loved, and I'm sure you'll get lots of suggestions. Floyd was capable of coupling exquisite music with moving, direct, personally relevant lyrics somehow. I'd like to hear what you think of the songs Wish You Here and The Great Gig in the Sky, 2 of my favorites.
