Simply put: Pink Floyd are in the top tier of successful, influential and pioneering bands of all time. They have a wide variety of music. Their live concerts pushed the technical boundaries of what was possible at the time.

I think you completely missed the meaning of the song. I've noticed that most of the younger people that review this song place the mother in a positive light. If you listen to the entire album and know the backstory then it's easy to figure out that she is domineering and manipulative. "Leaving the nest' is a metaphor for getting out on your own away from your parents' control and growing up. Listen again and pay attention to the line "she won't let you fly but she might let you sing".

She absolutely understands what this song is about.....she is going to be the mama in the song.....you are thinking about her reaction from the realization of the son instead of what is necessary to produce a mom like the one in the song. Mom's like the one in the song have this reactors specific mentality. It doesn't mean she doesn't understand what is happening.....her goal is to build the wall for her children believing she can build it better than was done here. And every mother that has this mentality believes their wall will be the protective shield necessary for their children to survive in the world. And while you could explain how such a wall only serves to ensure the child will be defenseless in the world when the wall is brought down it is an argument that will fall on deaf ears because certain mentalities have such a strong sense of their purpose being protective that anything else doesn't register. She doesn't believe the wall will suffocate, isolate and segregate her child from the harsh realities of life he may yearn to live. She can't imagine why her child will one day desire to tear the wall down of his own volition. And should the child be unable to remove the barrier she will not understand the despair that will result from the futility of taking the wall down. And once removed she will lament how ostracized she now feels from his actions.

The Wall is a single story told in 26 songs. Mother is one chapter of the story. The album is about a performer named Pink, who cuts himself off from society because of all the crap in his life (father killed in war, overprotective mother, abusive teachers, cheating wife, etc.). It is a story of decent into madness as he builds a psychological wall, and his struggle to regain sanity. It can be difficult to understand individual songs, out of context.

I think you did a pretty good job of helping her understand it. To many of us, having read Water's explanations, it feels like it's an oddly beautiful, dark ode to his mother, in that, having lost her husband, she develops an unhealthy attachment to protecting her son, and he does suffer for it because it adds bricks. But she's still his mom, and he still recognizes that the origins of her behaviour lay in her own history as a kind of victim of the war. It's like a cycle of need, where everyone wants a real hug but the world is all walls. And it's like a song is a lament to how it all unfolds, kind of by accident, and even the 'villains' like his mother have a kind of innocence. I also love how it feels like a lullaby.

A wonderful synopsis. Agreed that ALL SONGS ON THE ALBUM ARE CONNECTED; it's a life story, a fight against cruelty, addiction, isolation, bullying. Pink Floyd grew into a social commentary band (Animals, Dark Side o/t Moon), so, in addition to the musical prowess displayed by the band members, there's the sociological and psychological aspects that they include in their albums (not just individual songs, but whole albums!).

Oh, gosh, Dani…it’s hard to imagine anyone doesn’t know the major Pink Floyd works. Pink Floyd is one of the absolute, quintessential rock bands who’s main catalog is remarkable. The 4 albums from The Dark Side of Moon through The Wall are rock royalty. There is no one else like them. I highly recommend you listen to all 4 of them, in sequence, from beginning to end. You’ll hear some of the greatest music of any genre that you’ll carry with you the rest of your life and you’ll never be the same after hearing it. Two singers here (there are a few others across their catalog - long story - but they are the main two): Roger Waters - the talking style vocals (Mother should I run for President), bassist and primary lyricist of their golden period David Gilmour - stronger singing voice (Hush now baby..), guitarist extraordinaire and then some, lyrics and leader after Waters left the band

It's a little difficult to give a correct interpretation to one or two songs taken out of context from a concept album like Pink Floyd's "The Wall". It helps to know the mindset of the character(s) of the entire album, the atmosphere of the culture and time the album story is based on, etc. If I were to remark on just THIS particular track, I'd say the highlight of the song after the foreboding lyrics would be David Gilmour's awesomeness on the guitar solo. I still get a jolt every time when it kicks in after "...course mommy's gonna help build the wall."

I'm afraid you were a little off the mark with these typically dark Roger Waters lyrics here, Danni. It isn't a celebration of maternal love but in fact the opposite: the psychological damage caused by possessive, overprotective mothers. The child's lines are confused, bewildered. The mother's are sure and strong, but leaves the child socially maladjusted and indecisive, leading him to build a 'wall'. The final line 'Mother, did it have to be so high?' is a way of saying 'Look what you've done'. I'm sure you love your own Mum, dear, but you're among the lucky ones. How sad you're relatively unaware of the Pink Floyd oeuvre, which thrived for over three decades and remains one of the most varied and satisfying in all of rock, a true benchmarks of modern music. Every album was a landmark, and their laser-light shows remain unparalleled, trading mainly on the powerful guitar and vocals of David Gilmour. In a nutshell, they went through three main phases based on three distinctive 'leaders'. First, the psychedelic experimentation of Syd Barrett, who burned out early and became an 'LSD casualty'. Then the incisive, edgy Roger Waters who dominated their most successful recording period but left after an acrimonious split in 1988, partly over 'control issues'. From then until their virtual 'retirement', David Gilmour's Pink Floyd continued to deliver cutting-edge, widely acclaimed live concerts that simply have to be seen. So get started. The Wall keeps popping up throughout this concept album as an artificial construction people put around themselves to protect against reality, but it also keeps them locked inside, unable to experience life or spiritually evolve. And the effect that others have on people to reinforce that wall. Btw, my favorite album of theirs is 'Meddle', and if you want to hear the most blissful song off the album, try 'A Pillow of Winds'. Pink Floyd is one of the deepest rabbit holes- one that even Alice could get lost in, and never recover.

This song is about an over-protective mother who has castrated her son, she even vets his girlfriends to make sure they won't be 'dirty' and he will remain chaste and 'clean' for mommy. He is unable to function properly in the world because of her stifling attention, hence the emotional wall he had to build around himself.

ALL of their musical lyrics have a meaning, and over the years, I have found that everyone has their own interpretation of every song. I think this is the key to their success. They are very good at using instrumentation as a voice to compliment the lyrics. They never go full on hard instrumental but you can always feel/hear the emotions . I hope you'll dig deeper into their catalog.

Interesting introduction to Pink Floyd for you Dani. This song is off their album "The Wall" which came out when I was in college. Pink Floyd has always had great lyrics, usually introspective, along with very creative, often soulful music that is quite emotional. I would suggest you react to a full album by Pink Floyd, maybe for your Patreons. Their two most popular are "Dark Side of the Moon" and "Wish You Were Here". Pink Floyd demands listening to the entire album.

Your reaction is the perfect example of why we "old people" criticize today's way everyone consumes music. One song at a time, plucked out of context. The Wall is an amazing creative work & can only be understood when heard in it's entirety. As Alan Peterson's comment summed up, this has a much deeper (& darker) meaning than you realize. (Btw, the final line "Mother, did it need to be so high?"..the "it" is the emotional wall she has helped him build.)

As someone new to the Floyd 1, Pink Floyd IS NOT rock & roll, they are in a category of their own. Watch " comfortably numb" "sorrow" " high Hopes" "keep talking" all from 1994 Pulse. Of course " Dark Side Of The Moon" on the charts for over 900 WEEKS. !!

Like many I am a big Pink Floyd fan. Loved this reaction Dani! I'd really like to see you react to Pink Floyd's song Comfortably Numb (Pulse Restored & Re-Edited). The final guitar solo is widely considered one of the best, if not the best guitar solo of all time. Just as you enjoyed "Mother" I think you also really enjoy this song as well.

You have just glimpsed the opening of the rabbit hole that is the work of Pink Floyd. If you want to take a deeper look at it, I strongly suggest that you prepare yourself for a real roller coaster of emotions. The songs (Time + The Great Gig in the Sky) would be a good start. And if you're feeling adventurous, you'd do those two songs together and in that order, since they're meant to be heard that way. A beautiful exploratory ballad that is offered to you.

This song is quite evident that it is about a suffocating and overprotective mother, a rather negative figure who hangs like a shadow over her son's life and choices, preventing him from becoming a strong and self-aware man. The reason is clear: she lost her husband in the war and towards her son he pours her care and attention in a morbid way for fear of losing him too. While not directly referring to Roger Waters' mother, who did indeed lose his father in World War II in the landing at Anzio, Italy, the entire record "The Wall" is ultimately an anti-war work lest the children grow up without a father. Indeed, as someone said: "The function of fathers is to prevent mothers from driving their children crazy." To become a man, the child will have to free himself from all these fears and insecurities and break down the very high wall that he has built around himself. Happy New Year from Milan, Italy

You pretty much missed the point of the song, understandable as you havent got the context of the whole album, though the line Mothers going to make your nightmares come true is a bit of a giveaway its the story of an overbearing mother causing her son to build an emotional wall; The Wall as a whole album journey to the end of breaking down the wall. you should try Comfortably numb, or great gig in the sky by Floyd..

This can also be a song about a tyrannical government controlling your thoughts by building a wall around you so you do not get dangerous ideas like freedom in your head. Watch this song performed in the in the flesh tour, where the mother's part is sung by a woman. Even more powerful.

The song Mother is from the album The Wall one of the greatest albums ever produced. It is a concept album Pink Floyd made mint to be listened to from the first song to the end cuz they all connect. The song mother is about a little boy lost his father in world war II his mother had to become father and mother. She became very overbearing controlling to the point it made her son neurotic. It's a very sad song. You should do a reaction to the whole album The Wall. And watch the movie The Wall popping Floyd.

This song is not about a child getting advice from a loving mother. It's about a kid whos father died in the war and his mother becomes super protective and broken. He wants standard advise and love but his mother turns into a controlling nightmare just adding to the singer's insecurity. The Wall is metaphorical. It means the wall between the singer and the outside world. And his mother is helping him build it by her controlling, demanding, over protective ways. Nothing like when you were talking about your own mother. The whole album is one story based a lot on Roger Water's life. To sum up, the Mother in this song is definitely NOT the kind of Mother you describe. Which is why at the end he asks "did it need to be so high?" Speaking of the mental wall he had to put up to deal with her and the rest of the world. And this shows why the current way of getting music through Spotify and such is so terrible. It used to be people would buy an album, sit in a dark room with headphones on and listen to the whole thing end to end and get transported into other realms. Like going to the movies or reading a book. This one song at a time on playlists thing doesn't work for older music because by and large songs were written to be part of a larger whole.

I really enjoy your videos. This is my favorite Pink Floyd song. What is often missed is the tone of the song. This is not a healthy mother & son relationship. Look at the lyrics. In Mama's 1st response she says: "Mama's gonna make all of your nightmares come true Mama's gonna put all of her fears into you Mama's gonna keep you right here under her wing She won't let you fly but she might let you sing..." and then: "of course mama's gonna help build the wall." She is making the poor boy paranoid, afraid t0 spread his wings! And later: "Mama's gonna check out all your girlfriends for you Mama won't let anyone dirty get through Mama's gonna wait up until you get in Mama will always find out where you've been..." And his last line asking i f the wall had to be so high. It is, however, still a beautifully written and performed song.

As one person in the comments has already illuded too this is from "The wall" a full story from start to finish with every song serving a particular purpose on society and follows a man called Pink. This is about parents and the controlling power that they wield over us.

This album is deep and dark. I saw the Pink Floyd Laser Show in 2018 and they didn't do this song. I was so bummed. Thanks for making this enjoyable. To get the full appreciation for this album you must WATCH "The Wall"

Pink Floyd is 'heavy' unlike any other band ever. Their message (which you completely missed in this case) often is what makes them 'heavy '. This song is a lament and endictment of overprotective mothers, who cause psychological damage to their children. This particular mother would probably have used her car to 'serve and protect ' her little boy 24/7. Yeah, fun song.

When listening to music created before the 2000s... wetter it be 40s, 50s, 60s.. almost the entire century... lyrics were often deep, very meaningful. Always a good thing to check out the history of a song, why it was written etc. I love how you do capture the meaning of this gem, some reaction videos don't get it straight away.

I have seen many reactions to Mother here. NOBODY NOT ONE SINGLE PERSON had a clue about what this song is about. NOT ONE! They all think it’s about this loving tender mother!!! WRONG, WRONG, WRONG! It about a hovering helicopter mother. Listen to the lyrics! Mother might let you do their or that. Mother is always stalking her son! Has ZERO to do with a loving mother! Now so I expect today youth to get this? NO! Because this is chapter 6 of 26 chapters. These songs off this album needs to be listened to multiple times to really get it. Then you might have to watch the movie to REALLY GET IT!

But it just wasn't about natural motherly love and protection. It is a semi autobiographical account of Waters' experience as a post WWII only child, being raised by a Mother who lost her husband during the war, (like so many others), the grief and complete lack of psychological support, in the "just pull yourself together and get on with it" attitude of British society of the time, made her overprotective, overbearing and "made all of his nightmares come true", (watch The Wall movie for a better appreciation and the nuances of this Floyd masterpiece). This is a cynical take on motherhood and the problems caused later in life by the psychological isolation, self loathing and shame which resulted. Your loving sentiments to your mother, are in no way similar to dark the message contained in this song!

This is another reaction where the host misunderstands the underlying meaning. An overprotective and overbearing mother emotionally smothers her son so that he will need her for the rest of his life. A mother that puts all of her fears into her son, that has final approval on all his girlfriends, is not doing him any favors. It is an unhealthy relationship and leads to him building an emotional wall to keep the world out. Roger Waters realized this and at the end asks "Mother, did it have to be so high?"

Wow Dani, no Pink Floyd in your life? You need to fix that, they have an amazing and wide ranging catalog and have plenty of songs that would appeal to you enough to make you curious about some of their huge concept albums, like the one this song comes from, The Wall. I know you would like Wish You Were Here, On the Turning Away and Time. Please, more Floyd when you can, this was one of the best bands of all time and will be listened to forever. Enjoy! 🎵

I'm really surprised, Dani, you missed the point by miles. Please take this as constructive feedback, not as a personal attack, I'm not like that. But this track is hardly about mother-child fuzzy cuddlies. Mother is a psychotic overbearing monster who refuses to let her son mature and discover himself. The end result is a confused, low self-esteem man with a severely damaged ego. The Wall is an opera by rules of composition, a story that needs to be taken in it's entirety. Perhaps you might learn something more about the entire composition (the comments below are exceptionally good!), and then try reacting to other tracks. It seems like any Pink Floyd song from the "The Wall" needs to be reacted to with context of what the album/movie shows. The Mom in this song and throughout the album is very, very toxic with her love. Extremely.

You shouldn't try to get too much meaning from the song without understanding the context in full. The Wall is a concept album about a rock star named Pink Floyd. His father died in WW2, his mother became overprotective of him which were "bricks in the wall" or traumas that contributed to his mental breakdown which was triggered by his loneliness while touring and missing his wife but when he was around his wife he didn't appreciate her. He ends up going insane and imagining himself as a fascist dictator and then he puts himself on trial. That's the gist but you should listen to the whole album or better yet watch the movie. Roger was inspired by his own life and Syd Barret's life. There are also fictional elements added like the overprotective mother and the mental breakdown part about becoming a fascist and trial.
