you gotta love when companies put "void if removed" stickers, on items sold in the US, to try & scare people to not open devices, even though there is the Magnuson-Moss Warranty Act which has been in place since 1975, making it a federal law, that consumers can open or repair their devices, without warranty being voided.
@catfunt55834 жыл бұрын
Companies know that people aren't gonna pursue a lawsuit to get their warranty, so that put the stickers there anyway

Jonathan Watson You do realize it's not just apple doing this right? Most manufacturers do this unfortunately. Microsoft do it with the Xbox. If you want to open an Xbox 360 you either need a specialist tool or you need to have a lot of patience. When I had an Xbox 360, I had the overheating problem with it. I contacted Microsoft thinking it was still warranty and that I could ship it off for free repair. It turns out the warranty expired by less than a week and I was informed that I could buy a new Xbox at a reduced price. I think it was £100 that they wanted. I ended up fixing the problem myself by opening the Xbox, removing the heatsink and replacing the thermal compound, it took less than an hour and cost less than £10. If I brought a new Xbox it would have last for a year, maybe 2 at a push. For £10 though I managed to make it last for 3 more years. It would have last longer if I didn't drop down the stairs when moving house.

I'm using a 5 yo Lenovo laptop and I managed to upgrade the RAM, thermal paste and even adding a second SSD by removing the DVD drive from the bay. All these were done with the help of a simple maintainance guide provided by Lenovo. I was able to buy a simple screwdriver kit (only one type of Philip screwhead was needed btw), teardown the laptop to the stage where the entire keyboard, cooling fan, and even the motherboard were removed for cleaning and new thermal paste was applied. Additional software optimisation was done and now the processor is able to playback 4K video like it would 5 years ago! RAW files can be handled by Lightroom easily and Premiere CC is also able to keep up it...

It's going to be a tough slog, particularly in the US where corruption in the form of dollars put into the reelection coffers of politicians by lobbyists, is legal. This issue is complicated, and way above the heads of just about every single politician, judge, and rank-and-file political leader, not to mention the typical citizen. Intellectual property law is way behind the times, and technology is outstripping the ability of the legislative and adjudicative processes to keep up with its advance.

ifixit prolly didnt want to show their operations until very well established in the community. I'm sure theres a Chinese company that does the exact same thing by now
@BIG2hats6 жыл бұрын
The operations aren't anything special, you can do the same at home. There are hundreds of other companies doing the same thing.

iFixIt has been well established for years now. If I had to take a guess I would say because of delays in seeking approval from iFixIt, and the Australian tech company as to what they can and cannot post.

Genuinely love these guys. Thanks to them every iPhone I’ve bought since 2008 is still fully functional. Just nervous about what happens when my iPhone 7 goes wrong, especially with the waterproofing.

I became addicted to putting stuff together through these guys. First reached out when my OnePlus 2 had a string of defects: home button wasn't working properly, and the buttons to either side had uneven brightness. Camera was blurred. So I learned how to replace every single one of these elements through iFixit, bought the parts - already had the tools from previously needing them for my Macbook. In a time where the generational gap between each smartphone launch is narrower and narrower, in a time where the price hike doesn't reflect on the actual upgrade on the phones, the smartphone industry is reaching its endgame, and so they need to plan the obsolescence of their products in order to keep selling. We might not have a modular smartphone, but with the right tools and knowledge, we probably will never need to buy a new smartphone again.

an S8 back panel costs 50 bucks iphone X costs almost half the phone's price... it's almist as if they wanted you to break the damn thing.
@thiefrules6 жыл бұрын
Vinnie Sifter because you can't replace the back glass panel on the 8/X (not without a lot of prying and heat).
@JoseFloresEC6 жыл бұрын
Vinnie Sifter Why does it sound like you think that's a good thing. It's not lol. It's cheaper to replace parts than a new phone. I'm sure Apple purposefully made the 8/X hard to fix so you can just replace your phone when it breaks (more $$$ there)

Thanks to this video, I always used to think iFixit was just a tech review page. This video has taught me about their brilliant website. It's taught me that I can actually order repair kits and parts for most of the products I own at AFFORDABLE PRICES. I would spend a lot taking them to repair shops just because I never had the things required. Thank you for this incredible video!
