Also, I love how One never sexualizes the middle school girls. Like, even Tsubomi is cute to Mob but not physically overdeveloped and we as the audience don't see in her what Mob sees. The kids are treated like kids. Sometimes they are put into dangerous situations, but that is despite the best efforts of responsible adults most of the time. It's really refreshing

Reigen is one of my favorite anime characters, mostly because of how much our opinion of him changes over the course of the season despite him not really changing as a person at all during that time. Looking in from the outside, Reigen's seems like a horrible person. A charming facade wrapped around a rotten core of scamming vulnerable people, including our protagonist Mob. And that IS a part of who he is. He never stops being that person (at least in season 1). But as we learn more about his relationship with Mob we realize that despite all the bullshit he still genuinely cares, and even if his lessons partially serve to cover his own ass they're still things Mob needed to hear. He's far from a perfect person, and he's probably not even really a good person, but he IS someone Mob can rely on and learn from.
@CaylexT
@CaylexT 5 жыл бұрын
@gameking845 Yeah, but as Geoff points out, when *that thing* happens in the finale, it's not that Reigen wins because he just overpowers everybody, even though at that moment he easily could and sort of does. He defeats them by breaking their delusions and forcing them to look at themselves from an outside perspective. In effect, doing the one thing that Reigen does best... he out-talks them. Charming bastard indeed.

Actually, even when Reigen is bullshitting people he does actually help them. As long as there's no actual spirit involved and people are just imagining it, well, telling them simple "there is no ghost" won't really convince them, but pretending to exorcise them makes them believe they're fine now. Basically, Reigen is exploiting placebo effect, making him help people without having any actual way to help with spiritual problems. Also Reigen is kind of a polar opposite to Mob, which makes them supplement eachother. Mob is a kid who isn't yet sure how life works (at least in first season) with psychic powers that can reduce anyone to ashes, however he can't always calmly control them. Reigen, in contrast, is and adult who can get himself out of almost any situation, despite having no actual powers, he goes through obstacles mostly by charisma and his natural talent for bullshitting people. Mob protects Reigen from physical harm (examples in many episodes), while Reigen protects Mob from _psychological_ harm (he helps him accept who he is and tries to teach him morale)

ONE gets life better than almost any writer nowadays, and he certainly knows his audience better than most manga writers. His writing shows an understanding of real life issues as well as the way to overcome them that transcends the normal tropes in this media. A good example would be the subversion of the Body Improvement club trope. In most manga/anime, these guys would have been meatheaded lunks, someone to beat up or push around the MC for comedic purposes, and not much else. But in Mob Psycho 100, they most certainly are not. They in fact turn out to be one of the best things that ever happened to Mob. They show genuine concern for him, and even help the class bully who was wrongfully accused rebuild his life. They aren't just lunkheads; they understand that improving your body improves a lot more than that--your energy, confidence, outlook on life, everything improves when you get in shape. But beyond that, they are concerned about being strong in life as well. That scene where the club leader was encouraging the bully to go back to class even after everything that had happened shows a maturity in character design (not just maturity of the character himself) most authors lack.

ONE i feel is one of the best manga writers of this generation. I respect him immensely for creating the masterpieces that take main stage in this video. The guy is just brilliant and the animation studios responsible for the animes really manage to highlight it. His writing is just so, so... flexible. I am not joking, the plot in both series can in one moment be heavily action based and adrenaline packed and in the next become a light-hearted comedy that just makes you burst into laughter and tears. I think my favorite element of One Punch Man by far is Saitama's deep respect for the *concept* of heroism, rather than just the *act* of heroism. The scene after he beats the Deep Sea King, and the confrontation with the Tank Top gang after the meteor incident illustrate perfectly how Saitama doesn't beat up bad guys for fun, he's a *hero* for fun. He recognizes very quickly when his effortlessness in protecting people actively undermines what is arguably the most important aspect of being a hero; inspiring and encouraging others to become better. So he actively martyrs himself, allowing the people to hate him specifically so that the other heroes can look better in the public eye. He doesn't care about being recognized or lauded as a hero, he doesn't care about being known as a hero, he cares about *being* a hero, which in his case specifically means sacrificing his own public image so that those who are able to inspire others through their determination and hard work are able to shine in his place. It shines a spotlight on how being a hero isn't *just* about winning fights, and Saitama knows that no matter how good he is at killing the bad guys, he can't do it all by himself, just like most things, and Saitama subtly but perfectly illustrates the maturity to step down when he's up against a challenge he's ill-equipped to face, and even goes out of his way to help make it easier on the others by actively painting himself as an asshole. There's a lot of ways to interpret Saitama's actions in those scenes I mentioned above, and this is probably the most charitable one by far, but I always looked at it as an illustration of Saitama's respect not just for punching bad guys and saving the city, but for truly being a *hero* .

My personal interpretation of Saitama is... almost as generous as yours. I personally think he developed (or at least had reinforced) some of the characteristics you describe after meeting Genos and joining the Hero Association. Not that he wasn't a hero before. We see him saving a couple people from the Vaccine Man before wiping him out, and in his dream battle he declares himself the protector of Earth; being a hero has always been a part of him. But before joining the Association, as we see in Episode 4, he vents to Genos that he doesn't have nearly the following he thinks he deserves; he thinks fighting those monsters and saving people is enough to count him as a hero, and that should be enough to get him recognition; in fact, he initially signed up for with the Association to get just that. However, joining them forced him to see his own shortcomings as a hero, namely the lack of a sense of security and inspiration that other heroes (like Mumen Rider and the others involved in the Sea King attack) provide. While he's probably always had his philosophy that a true hero should always step up to face down trouble and help others, it was after his experiences with the meteor and the Sea King that he really learned your points about what it means to be a true hero (Sea King in particular, which really showed him how hard other heroes fight and how much they risk for others, as well as exposure to guys like Mumen Rider and Stinger who give people encouragement and hope in addition to fighting).

Thank you!!! Everyone repeats this as fact and it's driving me crazy! Saitama was interviewing *yet again* and it had gone really badly when he met Crablante. He wasn't a bored salaryman. He was a failed attempt at even becoming a bored salaryman. AND he briefly even questions rescuing the kid because he "wasn't cute". It's only when attacked that the hero instinct kicks in, and give him some credit for natural talent there. Not everyone could have or would have done what he did. And he wins. Even Before Training. So I think that's something to think about. But oh yeah is he depressed and the social interaction is good for him, and inspiring.

Finally someone gets gets One Punch Man message. Heard a lot of people saying "that one gag got old so its pointless, wanted someone who he could fight for real", but him finding someone stronger to him would ruin the message of him accomplishing his dream too soon and being devoid of purpose. Saitama learning that there are other good things we can do in life and filling his void with the company of his new found friends is the point of the whole manga. And i think this flew over so many people heads that one chapter is practically him and a character discussing directly that. Mob Psycho writing wise is a little better since the author makes the message more obvious and direct.

You're right, but still. That is a pretty standard plot in this situation, the one often abandoned by the narrative in order to give people some good good shounen content at that. I'd be happy to watch the bald man get himself some friends, but the author makes us sit through repeated instances of the same gag mixed with some no names beating up people. At a certain point, your patience runs out. Mob's storytelling feels more distilled, trimmed in comparison, with the remaining elements serving the themes much better.

In my opinion, a common theme between both shows is that it's okay to not be special. I mean, that theme is much more obvious in Mob Psycho 100, especially considering that they literally tell you that message right in the opening song, but it's important to acknowledge the development of that message in each show. Mob has an amazing power and is obviously the strongest psychic in the world (or maybe not I haven't read the manga yet), but rather than gloating about it and doing extraordinary things with it like basically every other esper, he learns from Reigen that it's not something that makes a person special, but rather another characteristic like being strong or smart. In that sense, Reigen is the perfect authoritative figure for Mob, a totally ordinary guy who's just having fun living life and, though he may be lying to people, does still help them out. So, Mob decides to not try to be special and lives life the best he can as he tries to generally improve himself. Meanwhile in One Punch Man, Saitama starts as a regular guy and essentially lives out the dream many people want of rising from nothing to become an amazingly powerful hero, but he shows that maybe that dream isn't as good as people may think it is. He becomes dissatisfied with life and this escapist fantasy. We only see him having fun when he's doing mundane things, like you said when he's eating with Mumen Rider, or when he has the spicy udon eating contest with Genos. Where any other anime or manga seems to sell people an escapist fantasy so they can escape the real world, ONE, on the other hand, basically refutes that and says that the real world isn't that bad. That some of the best things in life are the mundane things. That all you have to do is live life the best you can.

both’re also about depression, self-alienation, and cultivating a wide group of friends; Mob starts off with Reigen who (mostly) understands him emotionally but needs the body improvement club and psychic friends to understand other aspects of him and who help him with their different abilities. Saitama meets Genos who’s effectively the ideal hero he’s striving to be but other friends like Silverfang and King have their own skills that give them different and often necessary perspectives- King especially, ‘cuz he’s Saitama’s foil. he’s a normal person with no ability to fight but has somehow been elevated to what Saitama’s position _should_ be on Saitama’s own merit no less. he’s also the only hero with the sense (and ability) to lead Saitama to the monster instead of taking it on himself. there’s also the recurring theme that special isn’t the same as unique- Mob’s abilities and even power level aren’t unique, he learns from and copies the trademark skills of the people he fights, and said people often even learn from him and become stronger for it. even Reigen learns to see ghosts because of his influence, hinting that he could learn to become psychic if he simply decided to. on the flipside, Saitama could learn technique or psychic powers or to work as a freakin’ team for once in his goddamn life but refuses ‘cuz he’s a doofus.

@@pepi7404 True, showing some real struggle to win and finally being able to pull it off is amazing. On the other hand sometimes the real life gives you enough of that already, I'm pretty sure most people can think of their own examples. And not everyone is willing to put even more effort into games when already putting effort into everything else. Also the feel of raw unstoppable power can work just like a drug would, the brief moment of exhilaration and might that for a short moment fills the empty void, just to leave that hole empty and waiting to filled again. To be honest, I like to keep a balance of both type of games. If I feel like putting in effort it's time for Kenshi, if I want a power fantasy I also got titles to choose from and when at the end of the day I just want to see a mediocre story I get into way too much I'll play a JRPG on easy.

I disagree about one minor gripe. You said Saitama finishing off villains felt unsatisfying, but satisfying is the exact word I've used for that. As the story goes on in the manga, you start to see just how much stronger the majority of monsters and villains are than the good guys. Not to mention that they outnumber them and have no reason to worry about collateral damage or killing innocent people. For a while it seems like Saitama is literally the only one to balance out the power of the two sides, so after watching the Sea King beat the shit out of Mumen Rider and try to melt a little girl with a glob of acid, seeing the one guy who actually stands a chance against him come out and blast his fishy heart out actually feels like fairness and justice are restored. To me.

I mean he’s right in saying it’s unsatisfying in how the civilian characters see his lack of effort as meaningless. I mean hell yeah it was satisfying to see the Deep Sea King Finally stopped, we as the audience wanted the day to be saved because he was unstoppable. However we as the audience also know Saitama can beat everything in the show, so it’s nice to see the struggle and efforts of all the other heroes as they face off and sometimes learn from these close encounters. Few people in the show actually know Saitama exists as a SSS class hero. The same way we appreciate the efforts of Metal Bat vs Garou and centipede. Or Suiryu and others trying their hardest to fight the monsterfied people is as Geoff said, Saitama’s OPness amplifies the lesser things. Then we can see it be washed away with how the public views Saitama just punching things once or everyone thinking Tornado’s efforts stopped The alien invasion

Saitama can't kill a mosquito because it's too small and not a high priority. If he were to strike the mosquito, then he would have to hit it quickly, which would require a certain amount of force. The amount of force required could end up damaging his apartment complex. It's not worth it to kill the mosquito forcefully, so Saitama is actually trying to hold back his power and catch the mosquito normally. As if he was acting as a normal human, trying to perform a normal human task.

If something isn't a mortal threat--a mosquito, a cat, very hot soup, a light chill in the air, etc.--then he reacts normally to it. If it's something that could actually hurt him, his insane conditioning kicks in instinctually. I *do* think he can get hurt under huge amounts of stress (in the Boros fight when he kicks Saitama to the moon, the electric shocks show what looks like Saitama's hip breaking from the force of the kick), but he heals instantly from it. It seems like his body has a base point of "perfect" that it aggressively clings to, and it uses his power to maintain it. In the side chapters we've seen him get busted up to the point of losing teeth and what rreeeeaally looked like a lethal heart attack, but he doesn't show lingering effects from any of that. Sorry for the rambling, I've just been insanely into this series for far too long XD

Their writing is so unique that we can ignore the art and just involve ourselves in the stories and the rich characters. With the growing fans they get the chance of getting help from a studio and can even improve the experience with good art and music. HxH 2011 is the best example for me. I hated the art of the manga and old anime, but the soundtrack and animation gave the push to see the story and fall in love with it, but at the end they made the penultimate arc being the best experience i had with anime so far.

The same thing happens with raindrops. And obviously, Saitama isn't going to use his full strength against a misquito (at risk of demolishing his apartment) and it can be assumed that some, if not most, of misquito woman's misquitoes are genetically enhanced. Yet he is subject to the same fears and follies of any young adult, i.e, figuring out his purpose in life & maintaining relationships & friendships in adulthood. What I like about his characterization overall is that he is neither a hero nor a manipulative con man only. He is simply human. Also funny to point out that both are demonstrations that fighting skill is essentially worthless unless you're attacked. both how useless knowing how to fight is socially (for mob) and how underwhelming real skill looks and feels (for opm) seem to resonate with reality. Even the sort of dunning-kruger self assurance the less powerful, more bombastic fighters in both shows demonstrate feels real, like people acting tough for intimidation or just to feel cool or because they actually believe nobody can touch them. I guess it can apply to other stuff but to me that dynamic reads as very specific to combat between humans. And the mosquito thing feels like a comment about how knowing how to fight very well makes being defeated by everyday problems feel really really stupid.

I've never thought of Saitama as depressed. He's just bored of fighting weak monsters, like when someone masters a video game and beating computers is no longer fun. He enjoys regular mundane activities like everyone else, we see him happily chilling all the time. He's not lonely either, he's simply asocial, he has been since childhood, not once has loneliness ever even crossed his mind (as far as the reader is concerned). If Saitama does any social interacting it's because he has nothing better to do, he's literally said that. Not because he's sad or lonely, he's looking for things to occupy his time. One-Punch Man is an anime I plan to watch in the immediate future, so I don't know much more than what you've said about the series in your vids. Still, if I had to analyze your question at the end, I'd say that the sheer difference between a big bad trying to kill him with all he has, who he easily one-shots and a mere insect that isn't harming him and doesn't acknowledge him at all is what makes him unable to kill it. Despite hating it, he has grown used to facing hard opponents so easily, so when facing a nuisance that is so frail and easy to kill, he feels irritated. It doesn't require the strength he has been using up until that point, so it is something foreign to him.

That scene is from early in episode 2. It's a comedic moment of Saitama trying to kill this one mosquito. MB is kind of joking when he challenges us to come up with reasons Saitama can't kill it. Though you may be on to something... Saitama's power is so immeasurably immense that he's gotten used to using just the amount of effort needed for whatever he's doing (even when facing giant monsters he may not even be using more than 1% of his strength), so the fact that this little mosquito is taking more effort than he expected could be what's bothering him and making him lose focus.

I don't read too much manga, but my personal list golden writers in Japan I respect enough to the point of being totally biased are ONE, Kohei Horikoshi, Natsume Akatsuki, and Aka Akasaka. It's not the most thorough list, I'm sure, and I'm discounting the "older generation" like Oda, Miura, or Togashi, but these are the people that can get me to withhold judgement to see where they go even if they do something bad with a story.

I just wanna say that while I like one punch man, I think most of the garou fans, don't undertand his point. Don't get me wrong, I like him too, but I don't see him as unquestionably moral like a lot of his fans seem to think.

He's an asshole who beats up public servants to prove that a bad guy can win. Not a great guy.... but not a real villain either. But where he is right is on the meta of heroic storytelling: the hero always wins in the end because the author wants to please the fans, not because the hero actually earned his victory.

Joking aside, I'm not really the most suitable person since I'm a fan of garou, but I really think that he is one of the best characters in the manga, his development in the manga is extraordinary, his mentality is very complex, he wants to be a monster but even when he gets there he is not really a 100% monster, in chapters with the class A heroes he is among the best in OPM, his goal is not bad despite behaving badly because he wants to become someone that can change this hypocritical world is bad, who has read the webcomic knows about the fight between saitama and garou which is simply beautiful because he meets with a hero different from others not only by force but his hero thinking.

Garou You're right. I don't dislike him. I dislike the people that go on about how he's morally better than everyone, when really he's the biggest hypocryte of all. Don't get me wrong, that's not bad. It's great writing in fact. EVERY confrontation he's had, he displayed ungodly amounts of hypocrisy. To the point where every hero he's faced to date, are morally superior to him. Again, I don't hate him. I hate the small, but vocal group that treats him like jesus. He is the highest grade of hypocrite, and when he gets his ass handed to him, by saitama, he and all his misguided worshipers will be told what a little bitch he's been. Not that I consider you one btw. Like I said the group is small, but vocal

One small correction should be that although it may feel unsatisfying to saitama when he defeats his enemy’s it’s entirely satisfying to the audience. Every major villain saitama defeats usually does a lot of damage before then. The sea king is the perfect example I remember reading that arc In the manga feeling really anxious because the sea king seemed damn near unstoppable. But the moment saitama reared his shiny head I literally released sigh of relief. It was like when Superman showed up in the comics you just knew it was gonna work out.

I think what I like best about both Mob Psycho 100 and One Punch Man is their shared message that being the best does not automatically make you happy. Both Mob and Saitama are acknowledged in their respective worlds as "the best like no one ever was," but that fact doesn't make either of them happy. It doesn't allow them to reach their true goals. It's only through working on the things they're NOT the best at that they are able to find what they really want out of life. As someone who was in the Gifted & Talented program all throughout my school years, that message really resonates with me. If you only ever do things you're already good at, you don't grow as a person. It's only by pushing myself outside my comfort zone and working through the frustration of learning something new that I have found true purpose and fulfillment. Growing and changing are tough to do, but it makes life feel a lot more satisfying and meaningful.
