Yeah especially in some scenes like in the final episode when Reigen tells Mob it’s okay to run away and it shows a scene of a bridge between mob and reigen that’s broken with beautifully animated glass/oil animation that’s breathtaking and the ED which is also glass animation that’s so well done and the colourful shots in some scenes and the dynamic camera movement and the intense music especially in the fight scenes where it will make you feel rushed or hyper and makes you wanna watch the whole series, along with the storytelling and The Comedy. Art Style/Animation:10/10 Story:9/10 Characters:8.5/10 Overall:10/10 (Also the dramatic moments with the perfect syncing of emotional or sad music and it’s so effective)

They all have gang hairdos but they are the warmest, most welcoming characters in the series. Mob asks if he can join, they talk about how tough it is and if he thinks he can keep up, looking like they're about to chew him out, but then just... Take him in. Treat him like he'd always been there. Even standing up for him when he gets bullied, which is almost unheard of in Japanese schools. They really are great guys.

his 2nd series is ok, but since he wrote Makai no Ossan essentially to practice writing and visual story-telling, the quality is very inconsistent and shifts pretty often from chapter to chapter. Very true! I get the sense that a lot of people have gotten used to the expression of art having a competitive side due to how the industry has evolved over time. If we really think about it, would there have been any competition or critique among cavepeople making their historic wall art, or would have ancient storytellers telling spoken stories been in a similar position? There may have been (because of how human intelligence naturally comes with analyzing things, even if we don't realize it) or there may not have been (depending on who the consumers of the art were like). ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

I like that this video describes what makes Reigen special as being his charisma... but to dissect that a little further, "charisma" in Reigen's sense is understanding people. Reigen can't read minds... he, is not psychic. but he pretends to be. so he has to really pay attention to people in order to figure out what he needs to do for them. you'll notice throughout season 1 that Reigen doesn't leave his clients unhappy. he does use a legitimate set of skills to provide legitimate solutions to legitimate problems. the only con going on here is in regards to his methods. and I'll take this one step further and say that Reigen's special skill is caring about people. Reigen is an advocate for empathy. it's his tool of the trade... the thing that allows him to conduct his business the way he does. and you'd think that just understanding a person and giving them what they want wouldn't require him to care, but he's not actually scamming people. he's not offering a service and then stealing people's money by not providing that service. and when Mob wanders into his office the first time, Reigen cares enough to give him some real solid advice, not for money or anything, but because Mob seems to need it. when he's up against the members of Claw, he speaks to them as people first, not just enemies. he inspires all of the Claw underlings so much in the short time it takes him to locate Mob, that these people don't even care when he's revealed to be not actually their boss. and what Reigen actually says to the members of Claw in that climactic scene speaks to this too. the idea that psychic powers make you better than everyone else only works if you use your psychic powers to make others feel lesser than you. everyone wants to be special, but it's inherently selfish to think that you have the right to stifle that desire in another person just to elevate yourself. squashing everyone around you is a cop out. it completely avoids the difficulties of understanding and caring about who a person is. when Mob learned that Ritsu had psychic powers, they could've fought. Mob could've crushed Ritsu, and then there would be no confusion as to who was the most powerful psychic. but that also would've made Ritsu's envy and fear of Mob's abilities totally valid, and even necessary. Ritsu might go back to living in fear and never trust Mob again if Mob defeated him. but instead, Mob tries to reconcile things. he tries to reassure Ritsu, and to reaffirm their brotherly connection. he tries to convey love for his brother because it's worth it to him to do so. negating Ritsu's fears is actually much more difficult than affirming them... Mob could make Ritsu fear him easily. but it's worth it to Mob to do things the hard way. because Mob's brotherly relationship with Ritsu is worth the work. Mob cares about him. and in return, Ritsu cares about Mob. this is what makes Mob special, not only to Ritsu, but to the viewers of this show. overpowering someone is easy. caring about them is difficult. you won't always know how to care for someone in a way that does any good, and sometimes caring requires you to consider and work for another person's best interest. but caring is also what puts two people on the same team in life. it's what forges the connections that make you strong at heart. when Mob was about to go 100% murderous intent, his connection to Reigen kept him from potentially killing people. Reigen is actually the only one to "defeat" Mob's 100% and he did it by caring enough to understand Mob's emotions and say something that would resonate and deescalate his rising turmoil. Reigen was the only one who was able to figure out how to do that. he could only do that by caring about others. and Mob's gratitude manifested stronger than any power we ever saw him produce by himself before. it was given over to Reigen not only as a sign of trust and respect, but because Mob would literally rather hand over his power to someone else than risk hurting anyone, given the choice. Mob has the power to subjugate people... on any normal day, overpowering a normal person like Reigen would be the easiest thing in the world for Mob, but why on earth would Mob ever do that? the emotional relief of having someone there to help him is much more valuable to Mob than the power he would have if he let his emotions run rampant. empathy is Reigen's ultimate move, and it's the most powerful one there is.

As someone who has been watching anime for a while and a huge fan of 90s anime, I will say that I applaud animators that have the guts to venture out of the typical anime style.
@slavedemorto3 жыл бұрын
I personally think there are 3 anime eras. 80's and all the way to 2004 where animators were drawing everything with an open mind (Golden Boy, Trigun, Cowboy Bebop, Ghost In the Shell, etc). Old animations may look dated and ugly in still shots, but usually they have stunning animation when push comes to shove. Just like in Mob. 2004-2014 - where animation just looks like ass. Everything was made as a copypaste with very little animation freedom, as if all companies making anime suddenly decided to save money. Still images, same visual styles and so on and so forth. Basically most of shows from that era looks CHEAP. (with some exceptions ofc) 2014-modern - where animation goes back to the roots. Way more original art styles that are not just the ones being taught in schools. More freedom and artistic expression. Sure there are still some pretty stale looking and copy-pasty stuff. But because the Anime media grew so much, more and more money are being invested into it. And let's be real here. More money means more effort. If you are being paid 100 usd to draw a 30 second scene you would make it still image with an opening mouth. Who wants to work hundreds of hours for something that won't even cover the living expenses for the time you are working (in other words actually wasting money when you work)? But if you are being paid 100 000 for that same 30 second scene you can REALLY put effort into it, your life is covered and you can dedicate yourself to the fun of creating. (I speak as an artist myself)

I realize this comment is a year late, but I disagree with your opinion on the Hanazawa arc. I guess the plot beats follow typical Shonen tropes, but only on paper when listed out dispassionately. The character choices that move the plot forward seem very original to me, the reluctance of Hanazawa to actually kill Shigeo, past events that make Shigeo reluctant to use his powers, and the sense of loss the audience feels when he actually goes Super Saiyan... I felt really bad when that happened. This also had a pay-off in the penultimate/last episode, where I was very happy when Reigen interrupted Shigeo's progress to 100% because that would again mean that Shigeo lost his humanity for a bit.

I hadn't really thought that much in depth about Mob going ???%, but yeah, you're absolutely right. Usually one would feel hyped/relieved when characters power up, and, to an extent, I do in response to Mob's explosions as well, but, at the same time, there's a level of despair and sympathy to be felt whenever it happens. Because, in reality, those powerups are actual meltdowns of an emotionally repressed but ultimately very kind kid. And that's really sad.
@smoothblink4 жыл бұрын
So glad to see somebody said this!! I think people mistake Mob Psycho for parody when what it's really doing is deconstruction. It's a sincere story that takes a critical eye to the tropes of its genre, in a comedic and emotional way. The Hanazawa Arc is a great example of that. But it's easy for it to FEEL like parody at times, especially in the first season. It does poke fun at tropes! But I think anyone who's expecting a true-gold parody, like One Punch Man, is going to be missing out on half the fun.

Yeah! Honestly I was really surprised EyepatchWolf would say something like that after his praise for hunter x hunter’s most emotional arc (which I 100% agree with, by the way). I feel like the "artstyle" issue is an issue that has been present very strongly and for way to long in gaming as well. People assume that anything that is realistic is good and mature while anything cartoony/stylized is automatically either childish, artsy or shovelware. A perfect example of that would be The Legend of Zelda : The Wind Waker, which received major flak for its artstyle (meanwhile it has some of the best and most mature character motivations and one of the most brutal finishing blows of the entire series)

I agree, but most anime is not actually realistic anyway. It just has more line detail in a single frame. Characters still look like plastic or porcelain with jagged hair, massive eyes and tiny mouths. Terrifying aliens IRL. It's not a bad style, but it's very unoriginal at this point.

I think season 2 surpasses season 1 imo. Some of the character moments in season 2 are so damn poignant. Specially Episode 7 of season 2, where the episode sort of completes Reigen's character arc in such a beautiful and heartfelt way, it made tear up. No anime has done that to me in years! I came for the animation, but stayed for the characters.

Another thing I've realized from watching Mob is that the artstyle makes the people look more realistic in the way that people can actually look ugly. Most anime don't have characters that look like ass. No one in Academia, or even Jojo"s ( up to part 3 no clue on the rest) have one single character to memory that are butt ugly like characters are in Mob.The first minute of the first episode is an example. The couple is god awful looking, while Reigen looks kinda decent looking. Though I may be new to the anime community, I still think that after seeing like 10 different shows it's kind of refreshing (?) to get a realistic take on people in a world. Granted the friends that got me into anime won't watch it cause it looks bad, but I guess I'll thank you and Mother's Basement for getting me into this amazingly dumb and emotional show. Sorry for whoever reads this and doesn't understand what I mean and for typing so much. It's something I've thought about this show for a while, and figured maybe it'd add to what Eyepatch is talking about for aesthetics.

How he sees everything with his emotions locked away, only for them to eventually spill out into an over the top spectacle represented by colour, light, and other more abstract means. Even though things look plain and lacking in detail (compared to other shows) it's far more dynamic, which makes for a more visually interesting show in the long run.

I strongly disagree on the synopsis on the Hanazawa and the Claw Arc Mob's transformation in the Hanezawa fight is opposite to the typical power up and transformations in anime where the hero gets super strong it usually becomes a triumph and a new form the hero will use against stronger foes. In shounen the mad emotional hero gets stronger and defeats the enemy. However Mob's transformation truly takes a toll on him emotionally and physically even by beating the enemy it's not a victory but a tragedy to Mob. He's a saiyan doesn't want to go super and on the claw arc where you expect the same thing to happen it totally twists it over keeping the message of the show. Mob is still a great subversion to Shounen troupes.

To this day Mob Psycho 100 has had the most emotionally breaking scene of anything I've watched. After his fight with Teruki he broke down, and the narrator began describing how mob had become a mess inside from all of the pent up emotions he had held in for so long with no outlet for them and that really hit home for me. It's a struggle to not tear up watching that scene no matter how many times I've seen it.

Your point on Mob Psycho 100 visuals: YASSS!!! This really needs to be emphasized. The dynamics of the MP100 and the richness of scenes are so far beyond the 'board drawings' of many animes out there. The seeming simplicity of any one frame really unties the hands of animators and allow free reign when it comes to scene progression & creative approach to what's normally considered secondary elements. The resulting sheer intensity is well, well worth it.

4:59 - 5:21 is sooo true. One of the only shounen protagonists I know who's as delicate and sensitive as Shigeo is Son Gohan (more specifically kid Gohan during the Android Saga), who also happens to be my favorite Dragon Ball character for that very reason. There are tons of similarities between the two characters (so much that it wouldn't surprise me if ONE took inspiration from Gohan for his main character, since he likes Dragon Ball), the main one probably being that they're both incredibly kind-hearted and pacifist almost to a fault. It's precisely because they're such good kids that the emotional outbursts they experience when being forced to fight against their very nature and principles are so impactful. When I first read the manga and saw the Hostility/Animosity explosion for the first time, I remember being almost immediately reminded of Gohan's first transformation into a SSJ2. I would add a little something though: I don't think classifying Mob as a parody is a very good idea. It does poke fun at many of the old (and newer) trends within shounen manga, but it's more of ONE's gimmick (subverting expectations is like a second nature for this dude) than it is the point of the show/manga: it is, at heart, a classic SoL/action/comedy shounen (with a supernatural twist) through and through.

Just gonna slide in that its hard for a manga artist to improve when pumping out pages every week. There's not a lot of time to improve sketches and composition. It has a deadline. Naruto is a good example of this as it didn't change much over its 15~ year run but in some of the chapter title art where kishimoto had more time you can see him do some impressive drawings, such as the more realistic portraits of naruto and sasuke towards the end. That One is improving as much as he is with Mob Psycho is very endearing to me. He's putting in as much work as he can for a dude working 3 web comics and a remake of one punch man. It's worthy of appreciating.

Man, if only I had at least an eighth of this guy's critical thinking and understanding... that aside- what a glorious breakdown... makes me appreciate the show so much more! Thank you for all your efforts, Super Eyepatch Wolf! also: Direction > Art Style

Can we also point out how much fun the animators must have had? How much they LOVE the story and characters and how much they respect ONE? Like, this whole show is like a giant love letter to the manga and author

Mob psycho's animation remembered so much of Space Dandy, that's the way i knew it was Bones. You should really make a video about Space Dandy.
@buckwade38748 жыл бұрын
I didn't watch Space Dandy, but from the random clips I've seen of it, it doesn't look anything like Mob.

Srry,i meant animation. Watch the first episode of Space dande and the first few minutes of Mon paycho.

It's always great to see a new Super Eyepatch Wolf video in my subscription feed. A very compelling video without any spoilers(not that I mind spoilers but most people are rather boring to watch when they're trying to be spoiler free). It nicely rounds out the coverage of Mob Psycho 100 in combination with Canipa Effect, Digibro, and Mother's Basement videos I might be totally off but I feel like you would be a big fan of Slayers, if you were I would love to see a why you should watch Slayers(for a season or two anyway). :D

I love how much you appreciate ONE's art. Studio Bones got it and so did you! People often compliment his storytelling but don't highlight how well he draws emotion, it's always interesting and amusing!

I could talk about this anime for hours. unlike majority of shonen as well mob has such a good support system around him. this is truly peak anime.

Just finished Mob. The way Reigen just deconstructed everything about the villains was the single greatest thing I've ever seen.

I love the Mob's visual style so much! Almost every shot for me is like a piece of modern art. It's a great show. Clever, deep and touching. I'm not an anime fan, but I fell in love with Mob Psycho 100...I look forward to season 3.
